I have a question

Here's the question I want answered for me - Jedis can sense if another is strong in the Force, no? It's how they recruit children to be new Jedis. How many fucking times in the original films and in the prequels have we heard some jive-ass line like "I sense the Force is strong in you..."?

And yet NONE of the Jedi seem to realize that they're hanging out with a dude, Palpatine, whose dark Force powers should make him glow like a fucking light-bulb to their keen Jedi senses??!?! They're totally oblivious to it. IMO, that's a big continuity problem. And please no one offer an excuse about how "he's probably so powerful he can mask his powers", because that's just so fucking lame.

One of the first things a Jedi is taught as a chld is how to restrain their powers and abilities. A Jedi has to be able to keep their emotions in check, so if they just keep throwing off emotions, they will eventually fall to the dark side.

A Jedi soaks up emotions like a sponge, so if they expose themselves to too much hatred, anger, and negative emotions, it will affect them. Therefore, they have to be able to "turn it off." Palpatine was just exceptionally good at "turning it off."

A big problem I still have with the prequels--my biggest in fact, is that the Empire is soooooo young. In reading the books, playing the games, seeing the movies, etc. etc. I imagined that the Empire had been around for a long, long, long time--hence the reason the universe as a whole seemed somewhat sleezy and bleak. I think it's somewhat stupid that the Empire does ALL this stuff in like 15-20 years--their whole taking over the galaxy and holocaust and stuff, plus it makes Luke and the bunch seem less heroic when they defeat the Empire in ROTJ (I know it still lives on for a while.....). I figured it would be cooler for Vader to have been like a last hope to beat the Empire, only he turned out to backfire--but he's still cool nevertheless, I just figured the Empire was bigger than ONE generation.

*Note--Vader is cool, not poetry spouting, happy gee-whiz kid Anakin Skywalker. Han Solo would bitch slap the kid and take his lunch money and make him like it.

Look at it this way. The Empire is a dictatorship, which uses fear and force to take control. The most obvious comparison one can make to the real world is Hitler and Nazi Germany. They came to power in 1933 and 12 years later the "Third Reich" was a shamble. I too at first thought the Empire had been around for centuries but in a way this makes more sense. Power mad dictators never stay in power for very long.

Obi-Wan tells Luke in the first film (Episode IV) that he used to be a jedi along with Anakin before the Empire.

Also, Tarkin mentions in his first scene that the last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away with the disbanding of the Senate, suggesting that he also had been around in the pre-Imperial days.

Tarkin is mentioned in the Star Wars: New Jedi Order novel Force Heretic III: Reunion, I think. When the Jedi Knight Vergere (verg-air) goes missing after looking for the planet Zonoma Sekot, Obi-wan and Anakin Skywalker are sent to find her. It mentions that Commander Tarkin also was at Zonoma Sekot around that time.

Also, going by the Official Star Wars Novels Timeline as printed in the Star Wars: New Jedi Order novel The Unifying Force, the time span of the Empire is approximately 26 years. I reach this by going from when Episode III happened/happens, to when Coruscant fell to Rebel Alliance forces in the novel Star Wars: X-Wing-Wedge's Gamble.

Ep. III takes place 19 years before the first Star Wars movie, and the fall of Coruscant takes place 6.5-7.5 years after that.

If he's not including an original cut of the films in th DVD release, I'm passing on this. I'm not wasting my money on the goddamn Special Editions.

Looks like you'll be saving some money in September. Lucas has said that he will not release the originals. Of course Uncle George has said a few things that he's gone against. Plus you have the news of ILM sigining NDAs that control the flow of information concerning 7,8,9. If there isn't going to be a Sequel Trilogy, why have your boys sign NDAs?

One thought on the nature of the Force... Anakin (or Vader, depending on the part of the story) did not bring balance to the Force until Episode VI. It had nothing to do with killing all of the Jedi in the least. Why? Well, here are my thoughts on the matter.

I don't remember, outside of Luke explaining to Leia that he wanted to bring his father back to the "Good Side" (which I attribute to a relative novice explaining the complexities of the Force to an average person) I don't remember anyone ever using the term "Light Side" in the movies. Now I don't have my screenplays right here in front of me, but I have a pretty good memory for Star Wars trivia. Therefore, I have to assume that there is no "Light Side" of the Force. There is just the Force. Read the Jedi creed (from the EU, but valid IMHO):

There is no emotion, there is peace.

There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.

There is no passion, there is serenity.

There is no death, there is the Force.

I think that the Force, as used by the Jedi, is balanced. They were the "Guardians of Peace and Justice", in and of themselves, not purely "Good". The Dark Side is a pervesion of the Force, an unbalancing of all the Jedi hold true about the Force. Thus, the only way to truly "Balance the Force" is to make sure there are no dark side users perverting it. The Force itself doesn't give one whit about good or evil, it knows life and death, and it knows the balance between them.

I hope I explained that well.

As far as the three sequels? I always assumed there wouldn't be a 7-9. I remember Lucas saying, right after RotJ hit, that while he could tell the story of Anakin Skywalker in 1-3, there wasn't a story to tell in 7-9 so he would likely never make them. Once I understood that the entire Star Wars saga is about Anakin Skywalker and not Luke (or Han, and certainly not the fan-boy fave Boba Fett), I knew there wouldn't be a third trilogy. And if they bear even the most casual resemblance to 90% of the EU, I am thankful. Outside the Zahn Trilogy (which was pretty good) everything else I have read has been unmitigated hack-jobs of the characters. But to each their own... I know a lot of people that love the EU. Hell, I admit to liking the prequels so far, so obviously I am a heathen. ;)

Just something I've been wondering:

After Episode III: Revenge of the Sith gets released on DVD, will there be 2 DVD box sets (one for classics, one for the prequels) or will Lucas re-release it so all 6 SW movies come in DVD box set?
