Absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt. This kick was only to tie the game; there's virtually no chance that NE would have to worry about winning it, they'd probably take their chances with OT. Granted, Vanderjagt should have still made it from 48 but it's a much harder kick. Ugh, Manning had an INT at the goal line, James fumbled inside the 20. Stokley had 77 yards off 4 catches with a TD. Harrison had 7 grabs for 44 yards and a TD. Dillon rushed for 86 yards on 15 carries and Brady threw for 335 yards on 26-fo-38 with 3 TDs and 1 INT. Hell aren't some of you still making fun of Vince McMahon's league for doing exactly that? That said, the problem is not the rule, cause Dungy said it best a couple weeks back on ESPN radio, we're gonna see who's average and who's really good now, the problem will still be the inconsistency. You can't change that with a rulebook (Maddenism). I guess if you're Tony Dungy, you hope if you have to play NE in the playoffs again that Willie McGinest has like food poisoning or something. They didn't call it at all in the first half (as far as I could tell), and I'll bet there were plenty of instances that they could have made the call, but in the 4th, the flags suddenly come out? Call it all game if you want to reinforce the rule, not just when the game is close. And I would take out the "automatic 1st" part. Make it like an incidental facemask call: 5-10 yards either tacked onto the play (if it's a completion) or move the ball 5-10 yards up if it isn't. If the defender is all over the receiver, call pass interference and go from there. I still think that a lot of coaches and players will complain about it, and the NFL will back off a bit. Did Indy blitz at all last night? I can't remember seeing one single blitz. Dungy is supposed to be a goddamn defensive coach type guy too. Indy was rushing 3-4 guys all night and getting ZERO pressure. Brady looked good though, there were a couple of passes that he threw that had my buddies and I very impressed. I agree with whomever said it above - Dillon was woefully under used. 15-86? That's just over 5 yards per, I figured in the fourth they were gonna pound the ball, but that shithead of a coach just kept throwing, begging for an INT. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted September 10, 2004 (edited) You all seem to negate the fact the Vanderjagt plays at LEAST half his games in a dome, and so thus the fact that he made all his kicks last year isn't that much of an accomplishment. Gary Anderson did the same thing for the Vikings in 1998 (until the infamous missed kick in the NFC Championship), also another team that plays ina dome. Kickers who excel in bad weather like Adam Vinateri, David Akers, or Ryan Longwell (who, prior to a bad season which enabled Vanderjagt to overtake Longwell, had held the NFL's record for accuracy despite kicking in Lambeau Field) AND can maintain their accuracy as well as their ability in the clutch are a lot better than Vanderjagt, who benefits from having a good enough offense to give him great field position most of the time to make his kicks. Not say Vanderjagt isn't a hell of a good kicker, just that I think it's absurd people say he's one of the best in the NFL. I don't think you would have seen Vinateri miss that game-winner.
