MNF Week 2: Vikings-Eagles

I think the Lions could give the Eagles quite a challenge next week, Roy Williams could definitley pose a challenge to Lito, but I think the offense is good enough to overcome the Lions defense. I just worry about the classic letdown after a Monday night game that always seems to happen.

umm, obviously you don't know TO. Now in Philly he might have had an attitude adjustment for the better, but just ask 49ers fans about the "coming to play every game" comment, because Owens displayed alligator arms and unwillingness to play all out over his final couple of seasons with the 49ers.

Context Mike, context. Quickie recap for the Niners during the last couple of seasons:

 

They get shut down by the Bucs in a beatdown playoff game where everyone gives up on trying to win. They fire Mooch and bring in Erikson who was a mind boggling choice to pick as the replacement coach since he's never been a successful NFL coach. Their QB starts facing more scrutiny than ever for his dminishing numbers and fans longing for the days of Joe and Young throwing bombs down the field. Their running game goes to shit because half of their O-line is injured and can't block thus taking out the one component they had success with beyond their passing game. TO is getting double coverage but can't get any balls thrown down the field to him because his QB can't throw for the long distance. His QB can't throw long distance. His QB can't throw long distance. His QB can't throw long distance. He also has no accuracy when it comes to clutch throws in the pocket and threw INT after INT. TO's numbers diminished and for a prick like him that means losing contract negotiating leverage, which is something someone with the stench of "locker room cancer" surrounding his name in nearly every newspaper. That also won't help your value or character in the eyes of GM's and President's alike. TO doesn't do himself any favors by acting like a total jackass on the field. Blowing up on the side lines and trying to argue with a team coordinator, along with chiding the coaching staff, also doesn't help improve the image of being a spoiled malcotent. In other words, the last couple of seasons have been atrocious for the Niners with TO not doing much to help matters by acting like a complete jagoff.

 

But he wants the damn ball. There is no denying this.

 

He wants to play and he wants to put up numbers that will make fantasy league geeks everywhere cream themselves for the prospect of acquiring him next season. There is no questioning the guy's desire to win and prosper. Practically every interview he has given since the Niners collapse in the Playoffs to the Bucs has been:

 

"I want the ball thrown to me so I can score touchdowns and win games. Oh and Jeff Garcia like the man sauce too cuz if it smells like a rat..."

 

That's relatively close to what he's said.

 

He's now got *the* guy who can give him "the damn ball" and now he's satisfied. A satisfied TO is a happy TO. A happy TO means he's going to do whatever it takes to win a Superbowl ring now that he's on a team he feels will help him in this endeavor and are capable of doing so. That is until he fumbles the ball at the end of game 16 where the Eagles end up missing the playoffs due to a 7 - 9 record because of his botched catch.

 

Your mileage may vary and I won't dimiss TO dogging it on days. He did it a lot last season.

 

I've given TO a fresh slate to start with in Philly. New team, new digs and a whole lot of cheese steaks. He has no more excuses for playing average ball since he's got the type of QB that he's wanted to play with for years. The moment he throws a fit or drops a ball is when the fans and the media will be all over him and he'll never hear the end of it. Philly ain't SF and he better know this. Those crazy bastards don't let shit slide down there.

 

Of course I also said that the Eagles won't make the playoffs this season so I could be proven wrong.

..or the fact that he choked in a few big-game situations along the way. He never took a crop of solid 49er teams past the divisional championship in any of the years that he had started, a disappointment considering the lineage of the franchise quarterback.

 

On one end, Garcia earned the respect of the Bay Area fans with the 2001 Wild Card game-winner against the Pack (in the final play, clutch throw to Owens in a SWARM of defenders). When Garcia responded again in January 2003 with the second-best comeback in NFL postseason history, a 39-38 nail-biter against the Giants, he felt that he had finally won over his staunchest critics. Yet, the next week, Garcia and Owens were collectively shut down by the eventual Super Bowl champ Buccaneers. Garcia was back to square one, and coupled with a few injuries, and the surprising play of Tim Rattay, you can see why he was run out of San Fran.

 

In my opinion, the 49er quarterback is one of the most intimidating positions in sports right now - it's on a par with:

• Los Angleles Lakers center.

• Boston Celtics forward.

• Dallas Cowboys quarterback.

• Portland Trailblazers public relations representative.

Their running game goes to shit because half of their O-line is injured and can't block thus taking out the one component they had success with beyond their passing game.

 

Wrong. Their running game was consistently good to above-average for the last four years, despite a mangled O-Line. When it wasn't Garrison Hearst, it was Charlie Garner. When it wasn't Garner, it was Kevan Barlow and Garrison Hearst splitting time. THAT's where the problem lied, though. Let's look at the statistics....

 

2000: Garner (1142) - Barlow is drafted, Hearst rehabilitates from that major leg injury.

 

2001: Hearst (1206) + Barlow (512) - 1718 total.

 

2002: Hearst (972) + Barlow (675) - 1667 total.

 

2003: Hearst (768) + Barlow (1024) - 1792 total.

 

TO is getting double coverage but can't get any balls thrown down the field to him because his QB can't throw for the long distance.

 

He'd also quit on a few plays, he'd overrun or undercut the route, or he'd just let the ball sail over him. Owens wouldn't put his arms out, so when the ball looked a bit overrthrown, yet still in the vicinity of such a large receiver, he wouldn't expend the effort to get up there.

 

His QB can't throw long distance. His QB can't throw long distance. His QB can't throw long distance.

 

Statistics show otherwise.

 

Garcia's passing statistics on passes over 40 yards, compared to Daunte Culpepper (2nd number), Donovan McNabb (third number) and Peyton Manning (far right):

 

2000: 9 / 13 / 5 / 8 passes completed

2001: 10 / 5 / 9 / 11 passes completed

2002: 7 / 9 / 3 / 11 passes completed

2003: 6 / 10 / 9 / 9 passes completed (Garcia played three fewer games)

 

Of those throws by Garcia, Owens had 5, 6, 5 and 4 of those receptions in those respective years.

 

He also has no accuracy when it comes to clutch throws in the pocket and threw INT after INT.

 

2000: (355-561 for 4278 yards, 63.3 completion %) 31 TD's, 10 INT's (long - 69)

2001: (316-504 for 3538 yards, 62.7 completion %) 32 TD's, 12 INT's (long - 61)

2002: (328-528 for 3344 yards, 62.1 completion %) 21 TD's, 10 INT's (long - 76)

2003: (225-392 for 2704 yards, 57.4 completion %) 18 TD's, 13 INT's (long - 75)

 

To make a mention once again, Garcia was hobbled in all of 2003 by injuries, his stats reflecting that Tim Rattay began assuming leadership of the team.

Fun Fact: At the Linc, if it's a play that the Eagles might want to challenge, the replay is instantly displayed on those beautiful HDTV Jumbotrons the Linc has.

I still don't like the Eagles, and I still think Moss is a better receiver than T.O. Moss does play every game, he just has an attitude which makes people hate him, but he's been in check for the last couple of seasons.

 

The Eagles scraped by the Vikings, what with the Non-catch and the fact that the Vikes choked at the goalline how many times? The Eagles aren't the real deal, and Wilbon is an idiot for putting them ahead of the Pats at this point. I'd be surprised if they made it to the NFC Championship game.

I'll give credit to the Eagles Defense. Minnesota got stifled.

 

See what I meant about this year being a wacky year for the NFC North? Detroit is the only undefeated team in the division now, and the consesus top two teams, Minnesota and Green Bay, both had strong showings in Week 1 and disappointments in Week 2, while Chicago and Detroit both came away with a nice win. Everyone is 1-1 except for Detroit.

Yeah... that playoff loss with Garcia was the one where he threw a freak interception on the 49ers final drive of the game.
