Potential Scandal

Recommended Posts

Guest MikeSC

This is a memo, reportedly from ABCNews' Political Director Mark Halperin

Halperin Memo Dated Friday October 8, 2004

It goes without saying that the stakes are getting very high for the country and the campaigns - and our responsibilities become quite grave

I do not want to set off (sp?) and endless colloquy that none of us have time for today - nor do I want to stifle one. Please respond if you feel you can advance the discussion.

The New York Times (Nagourney/Stevenson) and Howard Fineman on the web both make the same point today: the current Bush attacks on Kerry involve distortions and taking things out of context in a way that goes beyond what Kerry has done.

Kerry distorts, takes out of context, and mistakes all the time, but these are not central to his efforts to win.

We have a responsibility to hold both sides accountable to the public interest, but that doesn't mean we reflexively and artificially hold both sides "equally" accountable when the facts don't warrant that.

I'm sure many of you have this week felt the stepped up Bush efforts to complain about our coverage. This is all part of their efforts to get away with as much as possible with the stepped up, renewed efforts to win the election by destroying Senator Kerry at least partly through distortions.

It's up to Kerry to defend himself, of course. But as one of the few news organizations with the skill and strength to help voters evaluate what the candidates are saying to serve the public interest. Now is the time for all of us to step up and do that right.

An image of the memo is here.

Pot, kettle, black....

[EDIT]-Nice of you, Mike, not to mention that the source is Drudge, whose legitimacy you have personally questioned in the past. Like I said a few weeks ago, Mike, you can't have it both ways. Either Drudge is always completely true, or his statements are often questioned as being truthful or not.

BTW, nobody has uttered a single word about the memo possibly being false. Not ABC, not left-wing blogs, nobody.

So --- we can now LEGITIMATELY discount anything CBS and ABC say. Thank God for the internet at this rate.

and discount Fox News and CNN.

So that leaves NBC, and that's pretty horrible too.

I think it's kind of funny that all these "liberal biased" news sources are owned by conservatives.

I mean, Disney? Come on, some years ago Roy Disney (the guy on the board that got kicked out early this year) made a comment that Mickey is "a good, Republican mouse."

Well, Mickey Mouse is the number one write in vote.

He gets almost 100 votes each election.

And I'm not joking with you either.

so.. if I am running against Mike, and he makes a little false claim, and I claim that he's in favor of banning all religions other than the Southern Baptists.. then I should expect his lie to get the same coverage as my lie. Sweet!

What I get a kick out of is that Kerry's lies are not central to getting elected.

Like how he is saying that Bush and pals are already planning on disenfranchising millions of black voters.

Oh, wait. Bush is actually doing that. Oops, I let the Master Plan out of the bag...

Except you can't really point to a bigger Bush lie than Kerry lies, right?

Except the ties between OWNERSHIP'S views and the news reported is not exactly clear and evident --- WHILE the ties between a REPORTER'S or PRODUCER'S view and the news is clear to all.

The most troubling thing about the memo is the 8th grade level of writing ability that the political director of ABC news displays.

Oh, but I'm sure Drudge fabricated it anyway...

Well, neither ABC nor Halperin have made that claim as of yet.

For the sake of accuracy. What Bush markets are deceptions, which aren't technically lies.

Anyways, Bush can just claim anything said against Kerry was based on faulty intelligence.

Some Vice President steered me here http://factcheck.org/ and it appears that Bush isn't being totally honest either. Imagine that.

Either way, if you misrepresent my tax plan, and I claim you're going to let the Pope control South Carolina, then the media has to cover it evenly. Even if my claim may be the core of my campaign. :headbang:

Hmm, the Dems have implied that Bush wants a draft.

The Dems have implied that the war in Afghanistan was for oil.

The Dems have implied that Halliburton is suddenly getting oil contracts.

The Dems have implied that Cheney makes money on Halliburton's deals.

The Dems have implied that the Republicans want to disenfranchise black voters.

The Dems have implied that Bush made up intel to go into Iraq.

But, it's Bush who tells the bigger lies that are more central to his campaign? Yeah, I can see Halperin's point.

Remember Chris Rock's bit about the differences in lying between men and women? "A man's lie is, 'I was at Bobby's house.' A woman's lie is, 'It's your baby.'"

Democrats = women

Hey, it explains a lot...
