Old school shows of the week #1

Recommended Posts

Instead of doing one show a day, I thought I'd do one WWF and one WCW show a week (and sometimes an ECW show too), all within one thread. Post your thoughts on the shows. Have you seen them? Are they good or bad? Best and worst matches? Favorite moments? Other thoughts? The shows for this week are:

WrestleMania 14 is one of my favorite ppvs ever...only WMs 17 an 20 are near it. Many good matches and memorable moments. This event was the key to the big WWF turnaround at the time.

I havent seen the other 2.

If you minus the Hogan / Savage match, I think Uncensored was WCW's best PPV of 1998.

Living Dangerously was also a very good show. The Taz/ Bigelow match was very good, and the Van Dam/ Scorpio bout was about *** IMO. ^_^

Why did Scott Steiner job in 3 minutes? was he carrying an injury or were they running out of time? Seems pointless jobbing him a month after his big heel turn.

Why/how was the 'dueling canes' match pretaped?

Well, not sure if this was a work or not (I believe it was..), but the way it was explained on the show.

The PPV carriers deemed it too violent of a match to be shown live as the opportunity for someone to get seriously hurt was too great. So the match went on first, before the PPV itself began. I think the deal of explaining it was that the match was to be released on video-tape, only edited to suit. Anyway, after Bigelow/Taz there was the whole commotion about part of the ring being broken. Styles started talking about Sabu/Sandman, before Paul.E came to the desk. The two hard an arguement, before Paul.E ordered for the Sandman/Sabu match to be shown. Which it then was.

So, it's possible that the match went on first so they had something to show while 'repairing' the ring or maybe because Sabu/Sandman needed the full ring.

Scott may have done the big heel turn at SuperBrawl but it was Rick Steiner that got the push in 98, even single handedly beating the Giant & Scott in a handicap match at Halloween Havoc.

I have to say I like WM14 and Uncensored 98 a lot. Uncensored was quite good for a WCW PPV, with several good/solid matches. WM14 is one of my most-watched PPVs of all time. Nothing hits **** on the show, but there's a lot of fun stuff on it, like the main event, Kane/Taker as a guilty pleasure match, the fun mixed tag match, a tag team title match with a few okay spots, and a very solid HHH/Owen match. Just a fun show all around that is very important for obvious historical reasons as well.

WWF Wrestlemania XIV was a great card. Not only from a the historical sense of it, being the first big step on the comeback against WCW, but also for good quality action.

Stuff like Owen/Triple H, Mero & Sable/Goldust & Luna, Cactus & Chainsaw /NAO and Michaels/Austin all provided pleanty of entertainment.

Good stuff.

Uncensored wasn't too bad, other than the awful non-finish in the awful main event. My favorite part was Gene Okerlund's interview with Malenko after he lost to Jericho. "Dean Malenko, that's four losses in a row for you. Starrcade, Souled Out, Superbrawl, and now Uncensored. That makes you a bona fide loser!" Even though Malenko didn't even wrestle at Souled Out or Superbrawl.

It was a work. Everyone knew how horrible Sandman v Sabu was at NotR '97, and rather than risk putting on another horrible match on live PPV, Heyman came up with this creative excuse for having to tape their next match. That way, if it was bad as NotR's affair, they could edit it into something decent. It also, as mentioned, allowed them to show something while the ring was repaired.
