NFL Instant Replay: Week 5

Recommended Posts

Man, the Ravens have got to trade for Brad Johnson before the deadline hits. Even Washed-Up Disgruntled One-Eyed Paraplegic Brad Johnson can out quarterback Kyle Boller.

Oh, and Mewelde Moore piled up a bunch of yards in the backfield, proving that perhaps even I could cash in a buck fifty on almost any opposing defense if I had Culpepper and Moss to keep everybody honest.

While it's true the Pats haven't played anyone decent besides indy, go back and look at the overall record of opponents during THE STREAK~!

I think it's around 141-108 or something...

Hey Tom, you made an error in your column.

The mighty are still falling at Lambeau Field, where the Packers are 0-3 en route to their 1-4 start. Only nine teams have made the playoffs when starting 1-4. Can the Packers be the tenth?

It's actually only been eight, not nine teams, so Green Bay is trying to be the ninth now.

Without some sort of miracle, any talk of Green Bay and playoffs is moot. :(

Im going to need a second jug of wine to make it through next Sundays game in Detroit...

With the exception of this Monday night's blowout, they've been in every single one of their losses. Hell I wouldn't have been so confident otherwise. And for that reason, I'm still holding out hope for the season.

The defense always gets off to a shitty start and I just saw an interesting article about how Ahman Green and how the worse he gets, so do the Packers. In each of the Packers' last 4 games (all losses) he has gained less and less yards and fumbled in every game.

Again, it's all about turnovers and time of possession. That first Monday night game? Green Bay had 0 turnovers, and held on to the ball 38:07. Win, 24-14.

Last night? Green Bay had 6 turnovers, and held on to the ball for only 21:30. Not to mention giving up 224 yards rushing while holding Carolina to only 38.

I dont think they were reallin 'in' the game against New York two Sundays ago...

They can turn it around, they usually do start out rather bad, but they have a long way to go...and playing in Detroit isnt the best way to start a comeback...

What are you kidding me? It was a one-score game, and it was the coaches' fault for keeping not just Pederson but an INJURED Doug Pederson in the game instead of putting in Craig Nall. 0-0 at halftime, 7-0 when Favre struck, and Tiki struck back, and New York only went up once Pederson threw his second INT.

That game was incredibly frustrating...Warner had so much time in the pocket, Tiki could not be stopped, Packer receivers dropping balls left and right...

If Favre doesnt throw that pass he'll never remember...GB might not even have a single point.

It wasnt a massacre like last night, but it wasnt that close either.

Hey Dr., just a little clarification on Julian Peterson's injury. Since I am in the Bay Area, we get the Niners on TV. While watching the game, Peterson was never hit. He jumped in the air and came down wrong. This was one of those freaky injuries where you don't get hit, but you still end up getting hurt. This is what the Niners need, but to there credit, they never quit and that was good enough, even if it was the Cardinals. The Cards had a tough D and were comming off there first V and I thought they were going to win. Tim Rattay is the starter, however, I agree that the system needs to allow for him to run around more, as he is too short to be a pocket passer, but I am happy they won one a game.

The Packers are terrible. Man last night's game was depressing. And to start at home 0-3 is crazy. They never lose there, well until this season. I think it is going to be a long season in the land of the Cheese Heads, unless the D improves, Ahmen Green needs to hold onto the ball, and Favre can't throw that many picks, which is better said than done.

-The Patriots are getting the job done and that all that matters. The players buy into the system and Tom Brady makes few mistakes and most importantly, he makes plays. Dillon improves their one weakness, which is now they have a good RB. And their D is really tough. So they might not score many points, but the D will make it so they just need to score enough and it will be good enough. The streak is impressive in this day of free agency, regardless of the level of competition. This week the get Seattle, next the meet with 4-0 Jets, and then I believe they hit Pittsburg (which is where I think they finally lose). This is the best team in the AFC right now. As for Miami, one player's foundness for smoking the ganga, as made this a very bad football team. Both their QB's are injured and I see Wandstandt looking for a new job. They have a good D, but what good is it when your O can't score or move the ball. The NFL has shown that the more your D is on the field, the more chances they will give up points.

-So a little discipline is all you need. So the Giants have suprised me by going 4-1 The D is better than once thought. Kurt Warner needed the change of scenery as he shows that he can still perform and can ensure that Manning gets a much needed year on the bench, and Tiki Barber improved his hand placement in the off season and should be considered for the MVP award as he is having a career year. And the Cowboys have much work to do. I don't think the 40+ Vinny is going to cut it. Injuries to the running game has hurt. But I just feel this is a ok team. They will win about 10 games, but are not going to really challenge for a League title or make the Super Bowl.

- Seattle proves why playing prevent and not finishing your oppanent is the worse theory you can imagine. Seattly had a chance to take the reigns from the Rams and they choked big time. They didn't pressure Bulger enough and didn't use Alexander enough to close the game. There is no excuse to blow a 17 point lead in the 2nd half and lose in your own house. I guess there will be no running away with the West this year. The Rams refused to quit and they won a very important game. I still think Martz makes a better O-Coordinator than Head Coach.

-Carolina is your 2004 Super Bowl Hangover receipiant. I think injuries have hurt the team mainly, but what hurt them most on Sunday was loss of composure and a player deciding to throw the flag back at the ref, which is major no-no. I think the Panthers are in trouble and look like they will the Bucs of this year. The Broncos come away with a V and I guess their system is the reason for success. I just hope that Drougns keeps it up, because I picked him up in Fantasy. But Denver pull out the V, which is important. But this is a team that I am not sure if they can really win when Jake Plumber is leading the team. And their WR corps are not the best either, but when your D is solid, it makes up for a ok O.

-Well if you love D, then the Vikings and Texans game was not the game to watch. Houston is a tough team, still a year or two away, but Carr is finally coming into his own and Andre Johnson will provide Carr a nice target to throw at for many years to come. Culpepper had his second 5 TD game of the season. Robinson provided a nice target for Culpepper. And of course Moss was productive, but Robinson had the better game. The playaction long bomb to win the game, was fortunate for the Vikings, as the Texans had the momentum and they were at home. Imagine the Vikings if they had a healthy running game. This was one of those games that makes you wish you had Direct TV.

-The Jets barely beat the Bills, but they are 4-0, so I am sure they won't complain too much. But I see them losing either this week or next week. Sometimes you can tell when a team is about to lose. And the Jets are giving off that vibe. But Kudos for Curtis Martin, who is showing that he still has game. The Bills just have too many problems to count. Losing Price hurt, becuase they didn't replace him which has hurt Moulds. Travis Henry has become a very mediocre RB, but McGahee's attitude would have me locked in one of those "Lessor of Two Evils" argument. The Bills need help.

-Tampa wins their first. New Orleans underachieved, again. Man, this team has enough talent to at least beat teams like Bucs. But man, they just play down to thier oppanents. Having Duece back will help, as he is a 100+ yd back, but the Saints might be in need of a new Head Coach, as Hasslet has not done anything since 2000. The Bucs QB situation is a mess, as Simms is not ready for starting and Brad Johnson wants to start. Griese might be the starter thanks to this possesion, but if I am a Bucs fan I would not be thinking playoffs this season.

- Look at Pitt. I did not know how good this team was, but they are living past my expectations. 4-1 start is nothing to sneeze at and it came at the expense of the Browns, which is a rival for this team due to the closeness of the two cities. So that is sweet. Duce Staley had his 3rd 100 yd game. He has been one of the better free agent signings of the year. This is the team I think will break the unbeaten streak of the Patriots. Crowler is one of the better coaches in the NFL, as he appears to have gotten his team back to a playoff level. And Big Ben looks like he could be something special. He has the talent and poise and he gaurantees Maddox gets to hold the clipboard on the sidelines. So far he is doing everything right. The Browns will win a few, but lose more. Garcia had a better game, but this team needs more offensive weapons and losing Winslow will hurt as well.

- The Colts did enough and allowed the Raiders to screw up on their own. The Raiders still make dumb penalties, which you would think would be a main practice goal. No excuse for jumping offsides on a punt, which the Raiders did and the Colts scored on the drive. It is frustrating to watch the Raiders shoot themsleves in the foot. Whatever optimism they had is slowly fading. I know there were calls for Collins to be the starter and those people got what they wished for. So far he has thrown more picks than TD's, not good. I know Gannon is in his last years as a QB, but I think his broken neck really hurt the Raiders. Norv Turner to me has shown that he is better Coordinator, than Head Coach, as the Raiders are as undisciplined as ever. The Colts were favorites, and they won. Manning had another good game, 3 TD's is nothing shabby. James finally looks like he is fully healed from his injuries, which means he will be a top free agent this Winter.

- Well the Jags great start has come to screaching halt as their offense is just not potent enough. I think they need another WR to go with Smith. Leftwich is on his way to becomming a good QB, but this game shows that they need more help for him. Another case where your D can win you only so much before they have a off day. As for Diego, just keep the Powder Blue Uni's, which are the only old school unis which are not hideous. Seriously, I think Gates has been a real god send for them. Two TD catches by a TE is great in the NFL. Any fantasy owners should attest to this. Drew Brees has saved his career in Diego, as he has improved greatly from last season by not throwing picks and minimizing his mistakes. Caldwell is another good young WR. So with more offensive weapons, Ladanian is not having to carry the load as much, which will prolong his career as a result and take some of the focus off of him. The Chargers 3-2 start is not bad for a team not expected to do anything. And we forget the Marty S. is a good coach. He has won before, and with his young players buying into his system, they should improve and win more games.

Very well-written, Tom. I missed the one sentence summaries of games you don't want to dedicate a paragraph to, but hey.

Just wanted to mention one thing about Jamal Lewis that you probably won't find too surprising. Not sure if you caught NFL Countdown on Sunday, but Chris Mortenson seemed to indicate that Tagliabue might add to Jamal's punishment if he sees fit to. Can't remember if Mortenson elaborated a bit more, but that seemed to be the general idea. Can the commish actually do that? I didn't think any league figurehead can simply say, "Well, we'll suspend you for more games" or whatever. Of course, it's Mortenson, so it may be just a rumour.

And my Bills will get win numero uno this week. Score will be something like 6-3.
