California lottery winner shot to death by police

Wednesday, October 13, 2004 Posted: 9:16 AM EDT (1316 GMT)

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- A man shot to death by police outside a football stadium has been identified by his family as one of the winners of an $87 million lottery jackpot.

Rick Camat, 32, was shot early Sunday as dozens of people fled to avoid a fight outside a bar before a St. Louis Rams-Seattle Seahawks game.

Police alleged that Camat was carrying a handgun and fired at a car that was leaving the area. Authorities said he crouched behind another vehicle and pointed a handgun at officers.

Relatives insisted Camat only fired into the air to break up the fight and said officers never issued a warning before shooting him.

"He shot once in the air to scare people away. He didn't aim it at anyone," said Camat's brother, Brian, who was with him at the time.

Officer Debra Brown said the family's account "differs vastly from the statements of dozens of witnesses who were at the scene that evening."

The officer who fired at Camat remains on paid administrative leave. An internal police review and a court inquest are planned.

Camat was one of 13 Starbucks employees in Los Angeles who shared an $87 million California lottery jackpot in 2000.

He recently bought a house in Federal Way, a suburb between Seattle and Tacoma, relatives said. He previously used his share of the lottery winnings to buy a house for his mother and cars for his siblings.

Guess his luck ran out [/obvious joke]

If I won $80 million I wouldn't leave the house. Hell, I haven't won that amount and I still don't leave the house.

Relatives insisted Camat only fired into the air to break up the fight and said officers never issued a warning before shooting him.

OK, so cops now have to issue a warning shot before someone else fires off a gun? Whatever...

So, his brillant idea to break up a fight was to fire a gun into the air?

Man, that wasn't very smart.

Sorry he died and all, just wasn't that smart of a move.

That's it. From now on I go to Agent for any information that involves the ATF.

Interestingly enough, the three things in this world I probably know the most about are Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

Agent can be your source for all information regarding drugs and guns... he can also serve as your agent, body guard, unauthorized biographer, and drug dealer...keeper-awayer.

I took a criminology class once that was taught by a former memeber of the LAPD, adn he once told us that in a situation where it's a cop versus a guy with a gun, if the otehr guy even starts to bring his gun up towards the officer, they are allowed to shoot first.

Stupid sumbitch shouldn't have had a gun in the first place, and he SURE as hell shouldn't have pointed it near a cop.

One of these days, we'll see a headline that reads

"21-year old Win for Life winner mysteriously murdered in his one bedroom apartment."

The story continues: "There's no apparant motive, no murder weapon found and no signs of a struggle. Police say that the man was paranoid that the government was going to kill him eventually for winning the game early in his life."

I was actually standing about 20 feet away from this entire incident. They guy definitely fired off about half a dozen shots... and they were not in the air.

He was firing at passing cars. Due had been in a fight earlier in the evening outside the bar we were in leading to one of the party members being tazered.

Fuck, if I won the lottery I wouldn't be anywhere near the sketcky bars we were at.
