Well, you’ve seen their old house, which is painfully middle-class; it’s now Vito’s bachelor pad. I don’t think Bam qualifies as a “spoiled rich kid”, but to lump him together with his friends, a “dirty middle-class skater”.

...you think their old house was painfully middle class? That's a fucking mansion compared to the middle class homes in my town. If they're painfully middle class, then I'd hate to see what is lower-class in that area. More than likely, it'd be a house a little smaller than mine.

It didn’t have to be “over the top” – it was insanely creative stuff, which teenagers and college students flocked to. I mean, just a few hours ago, my two roommates attempted to stuff me into a dryer at a Laundromat to incite a reaction out of the bystanders around us. That’s the contribution of CKY and the Big Brother crew – the idea of offending or catching people off-guard with random events or situations. Is the original content of CKY and Jackass dated now? Yes, but it’s great to look back at the “Self-Defense Test” and wonder why Johnny Knoxville agreed to subject himself to a tazer, stun-gun and pepper spray.

 

..and even then, the gross stuff from the CKY and Big Brother tapes were cut out of the MTV episodes to suit Viacom. Have you seen CKY2K and the prank with Dicamillo rubbing shit on Dunn’s face? OF COURSE it’s horrible in taste, but it was absolutely hilarious to imagine people like this subjecting friends and innocent bystanders to these pranks.

Woosh! That was my whole point entirely. The stuff on the CKY tapes and in the early episodes of Jackass were hilarious and you could see people in college and high school DOING that. But now? It's way too contrived, and the things he does obviously cost too much money for people to do. When the guy's popularity rose beyond just skaters and he became a full-on celebrity to the kids these days, it seemed like he stopped caring about doing things that were practical, and going completely over-the-top. Perhaps a good comparison would be if Lloyd Kaufman, who has been making shoestring budget films for the last 30 or so years, suddenly made a movie with a 150-million dollar budget and more plot twists than a bad Vince Russo angle from 1999. All of the charm would be gone then, since Kaufman works best with a small budget.

That’s because it was just a few contributors to a skating magazine putting together skits for their skating tapes. It ignited a cult following that led to a prominent timeslot on MTV and a feature motion picture.

It's painfully obvious that MTV plans everything out with Bam.

 

They film EVERYTHING the family does, chooses any eventful situation, then edit it beyond all recourse to create an interesting show.

 

That is the proper diagram with any reality show.

I think the point was that MTV execs talk to Bam and plan out their stunts, and make sure everything they'll need (for safety and filming purposes) are obtained, and only the reactions from Bam's family and friends (the ones not in on it) are real.

I look at Viva La Bam as a funny Sunday Night show, however it will never compare to CKY, Big Brother, The SHIT video series, or even Jackass.

In West Chester, Pennsylvania, I’d think that qualifies as middle class.

I don’t get where the hate comes from. His focus has always been pissing off his parents in one way or another; now that they’ve been desensitized to the little pranks, especially since MTV is covering most of the losses, he’s gone to over-the-top stuff to try and aggravate them. Along the way, you still get to see old touches of the cKy stuff done to his friends (the entire Mardi Gras episode, the crabs, etc.). Otherwise, his family and friends have been in the game for SOOOO long that they aren’t easily surprised by what Bam can dream up.

 

And the stuff is contrived? Umm, yeah, when have they not been? Most of the ideas dating back to cKy weren’t spur of the moment, just ideas that didn’t have the proper funding to launch itself into VLB-territory (ex: the chair slingshot)

I'm not saying he shouldn't. Hell, if you've got the money to do something, go the fuck ahead and do it. I'm just saying that Bam's stuff has lost its charm since it went from basically guerilla pranks to full-on Hollywood slapstick (if that makes any sense). Plus, Bam is the kind of person I'd punch in the face were I to know them (the immature, idiotic kind that does things for attention).

 

And he's from Penn? That could explain why "middle class" in Penn looks more like "upper class" in Mass. Since, you know, most of Pennsylvania's property tax is about half, if that, of Massachusetts'.
