Favorite Animated shows

Recommended Posts

Inspired by the Obscure cult movies thread. What are your favorite cartoons/animated shows that you feel don't get the respect or attention they deserve. Post them (or if you feel like it, your comments about them) here. Oh, and by the way, shows like "The Simpsons","Futurama","Family Guy", "South Park","Beavis and Butthead", and even "Invader ZIM" don't count because, even if a few of the mentioned shows were cancelled, they still have a big following. Granted, I do like said shows, but this thread is for shows like "3 South", "Rocko's Modern Life", and other animated shows that don't get the attention of, say, "The Simpsons" or "Invader ZIM"

Now, post away!

Venture Brothers seems to have gotten very little attention so far.

Well, it's fairly new. It's also my new favorite show right now

Undergrads was great. Sure, it was aimed mostly at a male audience, but who cares. It was much better than the overrated "Daria" (which started out good, but eventually began to turn into crap)mainly because it was funnier, geekier, and just more entertaining. If anything, I like to refer to it as an adult version of "Doug",another show that doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Cowboy Bebop and Big O (try not to titter and giggle when reading that) are pretty well known series. I don't like Big O, but I LOVE Cowboy Bebop. It's one of the few anime shows on tv that I like (The others being "Lupin III","Outlaw Star", and belive it or not, "Hamtaro")

Venture Bros. here as well. The Monarch's Henchmen arguing over how the Smurfs reproduce was Gold.

I'll say the Tick.

I thought the college flashbacks were gold. Especially when Venture starting seducing that woman that their friend was stalking during D&D. And Mr. White's radio address was great as well.

Though Dr. Orpheus and the Monarch are the best part of the show.

I'll say the Tick.

Both kick ass--and are from the same creator. Live Action Tick also voices Brock. :)

I like Megas XLR a lot, although they take their sweet ass time getting new episodes out.

JLU is pretty good, but some eps I have mixed feelings over.

I like Case Closed/Detective Conan a good bit, but damn some of the voice acting is hokey and the animation flat out sucks at points.

Though Dr. Orpheus and the Monarch are the best part of the show.

Maybe narrowly, but there's rarely weak episodes. Brock's killing sprees, plenty of Doc. Venture lines (primary because of the way they're delivered), and even the Bros. stupidity all work for me.

The one I liked least was the 2nd ep, the one in the space station, although it was important to establish the relationship that "Rusty" had with his dad.

My favorite ep would be the "Joy Can" episode or the Dr. Impossible one. Dr. Orpheus is almost a bigger drama queen than Bela. :P The whole exchange over how the "Joy Can" worked had me rolling on the floor.

Plus "I'll be out in a bit, dad! I'm practicing being a boyfriend!"

Dr. V: "...NEVERMIND!"

When highbrow meets lowbrow...

*Monarch exiting a portable toilet* "It was all sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Since anime is included; Inuyasha has been my favorite show as of late.

Maybe anime in general is deserving of more recognition in the mainstream... including Bebop. But in terms of shows amongst anime fans, there's no way Bebop should be included. Not that I think so, but if anything it's overrated. It's very much on the second level of "gateway" anime shows, after something like DBZ or Gundam; anyone who's an anime fan knows about it.

Big O I would include... I think many write it off as just another show with giant robots, and especially because the second season had heavy involvement by Cartoon Network, so many are biased against it from the start.

Venture Brothers is fucking gold. It should be up there with the other Cartoon Network and/or Adult Swim originals like Samurai Jack or Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It's that good.

It's alright, but I think I put up with it mainly because Ramna was so astoundingly shittastic, the fact that it comes from the same creator astounds me. Animation and voice acting is iffy too.

However, it really drags because you know it's going to be years of eps being translated and aired for them to actually get Naraku.

As far as quality, it blows away just about everything original aired on CN by far, in my book.

In all hopes, I was hoping that more U.S. made animated shows would be mentioned, but what the hell. Besides, I think (IMO) that most of the anime shows mentioned so far have pretty big followings. This thread was intended for shows, that don't have big followings, like "Rocko's Modern Life" or "Clone High" Then again, I'm not a huge fan of anime. Sure, there are some shows and movies that I enjoy, but for the most part, I have trouble seeing why shows like "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Gundum Wing" are so great. One show, IMO, was way to angsty and pretentious, while "Gundum" was boring to me. Plus, alot of fangirls ruined it for me.

I'll have to mention Rocko's Modern Life now. Personally, this is, IMO, the best cartoon Nick ever made. Sure, "Zim" was great, but I personally think that Rocko doesn't get the love it deserves. It think that it usually gets overshadows by Zim,

even though I liked Rocko more. Besides, how can you not laugh whenever Heffer or Philbert speak.

I've liked it for the most part except for the 10 episodes or so where Koga and Kagura are first introduced. It just dragged on forever. The voice acting doesn't bother me but I've been an anime fan since the early 90s and anything is better than those days.

My other beefs with the show are that Sango and Miroku don't get near enough attention. Their relationship seems to get put on hold for 15 or 20 episodes at a time. But I just find them more interesting than Kagome or Inuyasha. I like asshole Inuyasha from the first season better than the more docile version.

I'm kinda shocked it hasn't picked up yet, especially here.

The Fantastic Four rip-off team, complete with retarded Thing. The Yard Sale with Monarch's henchmen purchasing every fanboy's dream weapon. The "DisneyLand" episode. Brock coping with the expiration of his "lisence to kill".

It's like Clerks, in that it was made by people who grew up watching toons, FOR people who grew up watching toons.

Eva's well-written, well-directed, excellently voiced...and really ****s up your mind.

However, unless you're a jaded anime fan already, I wouldn't recommend it. It deliberately starts out as a bland, cliched, above-average at best anime...then it gets weirder and more screwy as you go. If you want to get some one into anime...don't use Eva. That's more likely to drive them away from anime.

Outlaw Star barely gets mentioned since CN stopped showing the eps. I like it quite a bit, although the final eps suck, IMO.

I dislike this show. I have a lot of hangups about it. For one, the voice acting and animation.

Secondly, I know it's all about the cases, but the plot to set everything up is ridiculous. The great detective, who we don't even have time to get to know and care about, being knocked out and drugged in the very first ep.

Then there's the fact that this thing has been going on in Japan for over 300 episodes, I believe, with numerous specials and no resolution in sight. That's worse than Inuyasha's extended run and is just as bad as DB/DBZ/DBGT. It's absolutely ridiculous, and there's only so far you can take Moore bashing Conan over the head, or Conan emulating his voice, or Conan trying to avoid everyone discovering the fact that he's Jimmy. You have to wonder how stupid everyone on that show truly is if they haven't (presumably) figured anything out by now.

It had about 240,000 viewers when it started and it's at about 370,000 viewers now. Which makes me happy because I was worried they were going to axe it. I'm all over a Venture Bros. DVD when it comes out.

Simply put, Gundam Wing sucks ass. Quite possibly the weakest series out of the entire Gundam family and that includes G Gundam, as well.

As for cartoon shows that are good but don't get th attention they deserve, I'll go with the majority and say the Venture Bros. That show is fucking awesome and the Dr. Impossible and Yard Sale episodes almost made me piss myself while laughing.

3 South was great. I just remember the episode where the fat character kept seeing some kid who looked like him and he kept calling him an asshole.

Clone High was also fucking great. All of it. You can find the series on torrent sites.

Brock coping with the expiration of his "lisence to kill".

"You don't like the Zep?"

KoOS: Perfectly understandable. Of course, we haven't gotten anywhere near that number of eps over here, so it hasn't worn out its welcome on me yet. I had no idea about the actual progression of the *main* plot based on what we got, though.

Still, I find most of the cases much more interesting than "here's a new demon with a jewel shard!" or "Sesh has a new gimmick to try to kill InuYasha with!" The eps they've shown emphasizing the dynamic between the two swords are more interesting, but a lot still comes off as filler.

Plus--CN, I know there are more seasons of Lupin... :P

The funny thing is, shows like BZ etc. actually turned me off from anime. I just never got the DBZ love.

One day my friend was just like "i got a cool movie in he mail today, wanna watch it?"

Being a movie fiend, I said sure. It was the Cowboy Bebop movie. Loved it, decided to get this uber awesome deal on ebay which gave me the movie/series for 30 bucks. Watched the tnire series in abotu a week, goddamn good. I'd put it up there with Angel in terms of how much I liked the stories.

Big O I ordered because I remember it would come on after Family Guy/Futurama/Etc. on CN at nights, wtached a few eps. liked it, so decided why not. I might pick up Ghost In The Shell pretty soon, heard thats good.

I just got a DVR, so youn guys tell me what to watch, and I'll give it a shot.

oh, and as a thread related note, Wacky Races just got released on DVD, am I the only one who loved that show?

I tried to watch it from beginning to end, but I just didn't like it. I think the reason I hated it so much was the characters, especially Shinji. I know, I know, he's troubled, and has a shitty life, but I just wanted to smack him upside the head and tell him "Hey, quit bitching and make yourself useful for once, ya whining fuck!"

At least the same studio made FLCL. Now theres a show I loved, probably it was susposed to be preposterous, and didn't have any pretensions or angsty, whiny bitches to annoy you. That's why I hated "Evangelion" so much. "Evangelion" tried too hard, IMO, to be deep and meaningful, but it only annoyed me.

As for good anime shows, "Outlaw Star" was pretty cool. Oh, and I love "Lupin III"

Good, old school anime, that doesn't take itself too seriously, and is just fun. That's how I like most of my cartoons. "Cowboy Bebop" is too cool for words. Oh, and damnit, I can't help but love "Hamtaro". Normally, I don't like cutsey anime shows, but this one does it for me. How can you not love a show with cute, talking hamsters that say things like "Kusch Kusch"?

Back to US cartoons, I actually enjoy "Mucha Lucha!" some. Sure, it's dumb, but it's still pretty fun. Oh, and "The Flea" owns. Plus, there are plenty of references wrestling fans and smarks will enjoy.

I think it gets a lot better once it gets past Inuyasha's sword being broken. They seem to veer away from the demon of the week stuff a little.

Well, they kinda got back into it afterwards, but they've been running a lot of two-parters lately and the most recent episode did focus more on Sango/Miroku(a good thing except for Kagome showing up in all the time and trying to boss Miroku around).

At least it's better than any of the "Dragonball" shows, though I must admit, Android 18 was kinda cute for an animated character. I've tried watching the show, and I can't tell if it's a cartoon or an infomercial for constipation, since there's so much grunting and groaning on that show.

Another show I forgot to mention, and kind of a guilty pleasure of mine, is "Totally Spies". So what if it's look and style rips off anime, it's just a fun show. Plus, Alex is as cute as a button
