The RAW mid-card scene

Recommended Posts

Guest Korgath

I found this on the Taboo Tuesday official site...

Benjamin 37.48%

Batista 20.11%

Coach 7.01%

Christian 6.69%

Rhyno 5.77%

Maven 4.23%

Regal 3.81%

Hurricane 3.77%

Tyson Tomko 2.49%

Tajiri 2.36%

Steven Richards 2.24%

Val Venis 1.69%

Rosey 1.10%

Chuck Palumbo 0.68%

Rodney Mack 0.58%

Whether or not the votes were rigged... this is proof that RAW's midcard is in a pretty sad state.

Christian gets less votes than Coach? Tomko gets more votes than Tajiri? They've got to start reminding people that there are REAL talents among the hoss-shit.

I voted for Coach.

Why?

Because I didn't believe for one second the voting was real anyway.

And Val Venis has always been boring to me. I hated him as Chief Morley, and not the heel hate. The "god, you are boring" hate.

You know, it's very possible that some fans voted for Coach because they wanted to see Chris Jericho beat him up.

I was kinda hoping Rhyno would rack up more votes seeing that he was promoted as a real threat to the title . . . but then again, he was only built up for two or so weeks.

Well, Shelton Benjamin does hold three wins over HHH, two of them pinfalls. So, I think that overall, the right guy did win, and won the title, too. Now, if they have Batista and Benjamin fued over the IC strap, that would be good for both of them.

The voting was the way it should have been. The guys who got less votes than Coach just need to be given legitimate pushes. Being scheduled in matches on Raw that get interrupted by Kane who gets destroyed by Snitsky builds up no one.

How in the world is Coach a "reasonable" choice??

Maybe I am missing the "greatness" of Coach, yeah he gets some "heel heat" but so did Harvey Wippleman, did any one want to see him fight for the I-C title back in the day??

How many of the midcard guys are considered good workers? Not many. That is totally why the midcard is stuck on stupid currently.......

The problem with the belts in general is because there is no structure. Orton lost the IC title one month and was winning the World Title the next. Benoit had the World title and the Tag titles at the same time, and dropped dramatically from the uppercard to the midcard. Edge had the tag titles and then the IC title. Jericho, for some reason, is still in the IC division despite having the UD title in 01/02, and showed no real interest in it before winning it. What determines where a wrestler is? Why does anyone want the IC title? Why does anyone want the tag titles? (Clearly no one does since there are so few tag teams, and more singles wrestlers tagging up.) What does winning ANY title do? Are you the top star? Well, when Benoit was champ he wasn't the top star; he didn't even headline against Kane. "To be the best"? The competitive aspects of wrestling are a joke. Do you get money? Maybe, but that's not played up. In the UFC, Matt Hughes (sig) said he wanted the welterweight title because it offered him security. He just bought a house and got married, he has a kid, he needs the guarantee and big money of being on the show and at the top of the card. There was an actual reason to winning that title.

Actually, on that point, one of the brands should do weight divisions rather than this undefined structure they have now. On Smackdown you have the WWE Heavyweight Title (230+), change the US title to a Middleweight title (215+) and have the Cruiserweight title (214 and below). You have have guys "move up" or "move down" in weight, you can have open-weight matches, and the tag titles can be open weight as well. This would be a much better structured belt system and would be a fresh, distinct, view of wrestling on Smackdown.

There's certainly enough guys who are decent enough and/or entertaining/over enough to be used effectively. Helms, Rhyno, Tajiri, Stevie, Venis, Chuck, Rosey would fall into at least 1 of those categories. To do nothing with any of them, while the midcard is in shambles, is pathetic.

The problem with all of the title belts on Raw is the simple fact that the belts mean nothing. The belts are GIVEN to wrestlers and are not something to aspire to, winning the titles means NOTHING since there is no honor in it to begin with. The tag team titles were given to La Resistence in hopes to get them over, did this work, I don't think so because nobody is chasing them unless you want to count the random throw together singles wrestlers working as tag teams. Right now they are lame duck champions since nobody outside of Rhyno & Tajiri wants to challenge them.

And then you have the IC belt which was GIVEN to Orton who was the champ for a while but during his reign the empathesis was not on the title but on killing legends, the IC title did not mean anything since it was used as a stepping stone so he could job to HHH in the future. And now the IC title was GIVEN to Shelton Benjamin who is not any better than Randy Orton whose only difference is that he is a face at the moment. Can Mr. Benjamin bring honor to the IC title, I doubt it, but it all depends on what direction he goes as the champion.

It really comes back down to the writers. You can go back to how the US Title was handled on Smackdown the night when Cena lost it to CCC...it wasn't even the mian focus point. I forget what writer proposed this, but he wanted Cena to go out and talk about how important the US championship is to the brand. The idea was shot down in favor for Cena making Michael Cole gay jokes.

Has a championship meant anything in a while? The only thing that sticks out in my mind is Benoit on the road to winning it at Wrestlemania, but that wasn't even built up that great for him.

Plus it is not good when somebody like Bradshaw goes from the Lower Card straight into the Main Even scene.

It was either Lagana or Madigan.
