Guest INXS Report post Posted October 26, 2004 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/t...dio/3955289.stm Veteran BBC broadcaster John Peel has died at the age of 65, while on holiday in Peru. Peel, whose radio career spanned 40 years, was on a working holiday in the resort of Cuzco with his wife Sheila when he suffered a heart attack. He was BBC Radio 1's longest-serving DJ and in recent years had also presented Home Truths on Radio 4. Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said Peel's contribution to modern music and culture was "immeasurable". As someone who grew up to listening to John Peel on Radio One, this is pretty sad news. Si82 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2004 Just utterly shocking news. A fantastic DJ who did so much to spread the word of many, many bands that are so big today but at the time were so small. He will be sadly missed.

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 27, 2004 Wow, that's a pretty varied lot of bands. I naturally can't appreciate this as much because I'm a yank.
Zorin Industries 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2004 Did Bauhaus ever do a Peel session? I'm inclined to say yes, but I can't remember for sure
Guest Kimaster1976 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 John Peel also has the distinction of being the first DJ in the world to be given and then play The Beatles classic and possibly the most famous album in music history Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. DCMaximo 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 Plus his favourite song ever was "Teenage Kicks" by the Undertones, which he played first on UK radio, thus discovering one of the all-time punk classics, as well as being the first, possibly only, DJ to play Carcass on Radio 1 The best thing about his radio show was the sheer variety of stuff on display, some awesome (thanks to him, I bought "Slain By" by Urusei Yatsura, which I love to this day) and some total shit. The man was a total icon and anyone who goes to a dance festival like Creamfields and plays some Status Quo as part of his set deserves respect.
5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 Pavement played some Peel Sessions too, I believe. The Fall hold the record for most Peel Sessions -- they've played like over 24. Wowza.
PLAGIARISM! 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2004 This does suck. He always played the right stuff, can't really say that about anyone else.
