Joe Paterno

Recommended Posts

Guest Gerald R Ford

If you part of Penn State's administration, what would you do to Joe Paterno at the end of the season?

Would you

1. Realize JoePa is the face of the school and pretty much built up the football program and feels that his contract extension (through 2008) should be honored and let him retire when he wants.

2. Have a talk with JoePa and tell him what he is doing with his legacy and the football program. You would not let him go, but give him somthing to think about.

3. Thank him for all that he has done for the school, state of Pennslyvania and college football in general but tell him that PSU football has to go a new direction and a new coaching search will be started after the 2004 season.

4. Implement a succession plan. Find a up and coming coach to serve as an associate coach for a year while JoePa coaches his final year in a "farewell tour" season. The associate coach takes over after the 2005 season.

Oy. I don't know.

I have all the respect in the world for the man, but the school has just been sucking as of late, and you can't help but think that it's at the very least partially his fault.

You have to give the man the respect he deserves, though, and let him retire on his own terms and with dignity.

No you don't. You can't allow the team to totally implode because you don't want to offend the man. He's already caused the team damage that is unlikely to be undone anytime soon --- when you stop getting top recruits, it's hard to start getting them again.

Mike, the team has been imploded for years now. A year or two more of Paterno, allowing the man to go out with dignity, can't hurt them more than they've already been hurt.

The team has gone from elite to laughingstock. Continuing down the stretch is going to make EVER becoming competitive again.

At this rate, PSU will be in a perennial battle with NW for doormat of the Big X. They still have some name recognition and can get the occasional big signing. The longer they wait, the more that will fade.

If Joe Pa won't leave on his own, then you have to kick him out.

Something seriously needs to be done at PSU, as the coaching has REALLY fallen off in the past couple of years, mainly with Jay Paterno playcalling and sucking at it. Galen Hall hasn't seemed much better either.

They really need to start looking for a successor. I know Paterno doesn't want to retire because reportedly, he's afraid that what will happen to him is the same thing that happened to Bear Bryant(died 2 months after coaching his final game.)

PSU has been getting its ass-kicked recruiting wise since they joined the Big Ten in 1994, as Ohio State and Michigan now come into Pennsylvania regularly and take top recruits.

The offense went downhill when Fran Ganter left. I really thought he would be the one to replace JoePa. I agree with you about JayPa, Zack Mills hasn't gotten too better since 2001.

About Ohio State and recruiting, though they did take 2 players from there, OSU tends to stick in state.

That's marginally better than dying while still active

He'll always be there kkk. Him, Castro, and Keith Richards will never die.

I saw him once when I was at an ATM machine. He tried to get my autograph. I told him to get his old ass out of my way.

And what a big surprise his kid is an Assistant Coach...

I have a lot of respect for the man, but there comes a time when you have to hang it up and let a program move on. You can't just drag something out and continue to beat a dead horse. I really don't see how he could possibly stay around until 2008. I know the man enjoys the game, but how much fun can it be when you almost automatically know going into a game that you are going to lose.

I'm sorry Joe Pa, time to go.

A perfect parallel to point to would be the Dallas Cowboys after Jerry Jones took over the team. Landry couldn't cut it anymore, so Jerry forced him out in favor of Jimmy Johnson. The fans were in an uproar ("how can you turf a legend like Landry?"), but it was ultimately the right call, as they got 3 Super Bowl wins out of the deal.

They've got to sit down with him and lay it out like this: "we love you Joe, the fans love you, but the team hasn't been good in years. We're losing recruits. It's time to go in a new direction. Either announce you are stepping down after next season, or we'll be forced to fire you."

It's not like he has to sit at home doing nothing. PSU can have him do fundraising, create some kind of position in the athletic dept., etc. I'm sure they can think of something for him to do for the school.

(BTW, I'm a PSU alum)

This is such a joke. I hate PS so I hope he fucking falls flat on the sidelines.

Seriously though, I can't believe anyone is even talking about this, considering I think Paterno himself would rather die during a game than retire with dignity and respect. Well to retire with those things, he would have to retire almost 10 years ago. This team and Joe Pa right now are the laughing stock of college football and they should be.

Plus, in 38 years of coaching and you only win 2 national championships...........your overrated.

Actually, most fans knew that Landry's time was up. They got in an uproar because of the way Jones chose to turf Landry--via telephone from a golf course, without ANY previous discussion with Landry about it whatsoever.

My dad still holds it against Jones to this day.

Would you also include Bobby Bowden in this group?

On topic, I have yet to figure out why nobody from PSU administration has just taken charge and forced Paterno out. "Respect" for the man? Pffft. How about some respect for your once-proud football program?

Yeah, I would put Bowden in the overrated area as well. I will give him credit for having a program that hasn't suffered from stupidity(well, at least on Bowden's part.....more like his players stupidity)..........

The main reason why Paterno hasn't been forced out is that they would lose a TON of money from the alums. Plain and simple. I don't know how many people here are from PA.......but they can attest to the "godlike" attitude that people that live here have with Paterno. He's probably the most beloved sports figure in the entire state.

I agree with you on getting him out though. Pretty sad to see people watch their program go down the shitter instead of a coaching change.......

A legend of Joe-Pa's stature deserves to go out on his own terms. I think Penn State's AD realizes this...hopefully Paterno realizes when its time to ride off.

Itd be nice to see him retire with a decent year. Whenever that might be...

At some point it comes time for a forced retirement. Basically the AD needs to sit him down and say "Look, either retire with some grace or we're going to have a bad situation where I fire you and the university looks shitty."

Penn St. will continue to suck as long as Paterno is still around, the program long having lost its aura.

While they aren't up in arms wanting him gone in PA, is there anyone desperately wanting him to stay either?

I'm not a Penn State fan and I live in PA, and I think he should stay. I really don't care how the team does, but it is pretty funny listening to him freaking out at reporters recently. Plus there's always that outside chance that he could die on the sidelines. From a football standpoint, though, he has to go. Word around here is he's sticking around until he can force them to make his son the new coach, which I'm sure wouldn't be much better since he has basically no experience.
