EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 I like the Aurilia signing. Aurilia is far from a star, but he should provide league average offense to a team that had the potential to bomb at the position.

MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 ESPNEWS just said the O's backed out of the Delgado race, well, only one team left WTF? Considering they've made exactly ZERO significant moves this offseason (no, signing two guys whose combined age is 500 doesn't count), why would they pull out. Goddamnit, it's really becoming difficult to be an Orioles fan. Angelos is going to get his guaranteed revenue and sale value of the Orioles, and then he'll have no reason what so ever to do anything to make the Orioles a better team. It will end up being an self fulfilling prophecy since people are going to get fed up with it. I wish that MLB would tell him to go to hell, but they wont do that because then it would get dragged to the courts and they could end up losing more than just the guaranteed revenue/sale value that they're going to put up. Peter Angelos is about to become higher on my hate list than Dan Snyder. Dan Snyder singlehandedly ruined the Redskins franchise and now Angelos is trying to do the same to the Orioles. MrRant 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 JOHN HUNT As the Seattle Mariners anticipate the numbers that newcomers Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson will put up in 2005, they will be generating more numbers of their own. Advertisement Click Here The Mariners have hired Mat Olkin as player acquisition consultant to general manager Bill Bavasi. "It's more sabermetric than the job title necessarily implies," Olkin said. Sabermetrics, its named derived from the Society for American Baseball Research, is the analysis of baseball statistics. Olkin will act as a statistical sounding board for Bavasi in all things related to roster management. "Everything Bill does is his decision, and he's the one who's going to get the credit or the blame for it," Olkin said. "All I do is give him information and an opinion and try to let him make a more informed decision." Bavasi was not available for comment Thursday but has confirmed the hiring. The Mariners are joining a trend in major league baseball toward hiring numbers-oriented people to help with baseball decisions. Allan Roth pioneered the field with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s. Craig Wright gained fame with the Texas Rangers in the 1980s with his book "The Diamond Appraised," and the Boston Red Sox made the biggest splash when they hired "Baseball Abstract" guru Bill James after the 2002 season. Other teams have hired number crunchers as consultants recently, such as Keith Law by the Toronto Blue Jays and Ron Shandler by the St. Louis Cardinals. The new wave of hiring and the popularity of the "Moneyball" statistically-based approach have created a scouts vs. stats debate in baseball circles. Bavasi, since joining the Mariners after the 2003 season and becoming a division rival of Oakland's Billy Beane, has embraced both. And the success of the Red Sox and Cardinals last season can't hurt the trend toward stats. "A community of minds is always going to work better than any one mind," said Olkin, a friend of James and Wright's who has contributed to "Baseball Prospectus" as well as the "Bill James Baseball Abstract" and the STATS, Inc., publications. "Just to know what all these brilliant people are saying, it's an advantage to have one person who can funnel all that toward a specific issue." Olkin said he gave Bavasi as much positive input as he could before the signing of Beltre to a five-year, $64 million contract that was lauded by the statistical experts as the best move, by far, by the Mariners under Bavasi. "He's one of the youngest free agents in history," Olkin said, "so you can expect him to be at his peak longer than just about anybody else you could sign." http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian...12432108260.xml and Sele returns home to Mariners January 20 Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "Sele, 34, a former North Kitsap High standout who lives in the area, has agreed to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to the Mariners' spring training camp when it opens Feb. 16. Sele posted 32 of his 131 career wins in his two seasons with the Mariners." http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/208599_mari20.html

"The team will not trade its young players for Sosa." Seriously, the Nationals front office is ridiculous. They're ridiculous for considering the trade in the first place. Why pick up an aging outfielder and pay him more money when you already have Jose Guillen, Brad Wilkerson, Ryan Church, and Terrmel Sledge available to man the corner outfield positions? Mik 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 According to my scanning of the respective local papers this morning, here are the final offers for Delgado: O's: 4 years, 48 mil Marlins: 4 years, 50 mil Mets: 4 years, 51 mil The article in the Miami Herald pretty much makes it look like he is signed, sealed and delivered to Florida. Most of the articles say a decision will come today.

strummer 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 Sources from Mets Inside Pitch are saying that Delgado is signing with the Marlins and it will be announced around 4 PM. They are a very reliable source, so it looks like a done deal. I wonder what the hell took so long, as it was clear he wanted to go to the Marlins to begin with. I can understand bargaining to up the price, but this was ridiculous. And now according to other talks, Delgado really had no intention of ever going to the Mets and his agent out right lied to Omar Minaya. I know agents do this, but this was a damn circus. Sloane makes Boras look like Danny Kay.

strummer 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 Hope you're not getting my hopes up! well, it's tough to know who to believe and this has been a mess with Delgado, but MIP is usually very reliable. But who knows with this deal, I haven't seen anything like it before.

strummer 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 It's official, Carlos Delgado is a Marlin. Mets Inside Pitch proves to be more reliable than ESPN again. And once again, he never had any intention of going to the Mets, he always wanted to go to the Marlins. This whole deal was Sloane.
Mik 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 It's on ESPN.com now. That's what I'm talking about. 4 years, 52 million and a vesting option for a 5th year at an additional 12 million. Wow. As long as they think they can afford it, they know their finances better than the fans. The landscape of the NL East just changed dramatically, and I'm of the opinion that the Marlins are by far the most complete team in the division.

Mik 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 Yeah... playing essentially as a one man team. Pierre Castillo Cabrera Delgado Lowell LoDuca Conine A. Gonzalez Pitcher Looks like a good lineup to me. Think of the impact this will have on Miguel Cabrera. This was the KEY piece of the puzzle and the one I thought I could only dream about at the beginning of the offseason. This is also the Marlins biggest free agent signing ever.

DerangedHermit 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 This whole Delgado ordeal reminded me of when the Mets negotiated with Juan Gonzalez a few years ago.
