And So it Begins

Recommended Posts

I hope David Sloane gets a raise. He got Delgado an extra year and $20 million+ than what was being reported for most of the off-season. Also, Richie Sexson's gotta be kicking himself for signing so early.

...and the Braves will still win the NL East.

Or at least I can hope and pray they do.

I'd say it's going to be weird seeing Delgado wear something other than a Blue Jays uniform, but they went through about 4 of them in his time there.

The streak is over this year.

Not a chance.

The Braves came in last year with what on paper looked like a shit roster and still managed to win by 10 games.

This offseason they've only gotten better. Delgado's a good player but he's not going to put the Fish over the top of anything.

I don't want the Braves streak to end, and I really don't want it to end against the fucking Marlins

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent

I never thought I'd be going into a season rooting for the Braves to take the East. I've never liked Delgado. Maybe I'll go for the Mets, but they'll ultimately choke.

Don't SAY THAT!  :(

Omar better not be done, and he better not go after Sosa. Son of a bitch.

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

so here's how Delgado's 5th year works.

He needs to get 30 MVP points over the 4 years. Winning it would be 10, runner up would be 9, and so on. Plus he would get 10 for an NLCS MVP and 20 for a World Series MVP.

in other words, if Delgado is good enough to reach that, Florida will be more than happy to pay the 5th year.

That sounds good enough. If he reaches incentive, he should get the 5th year.

The streak is over this year. The Marlins are winning the NL East. Their lineup is incredible, and so is their rotation. The only question mark, to me, is if Guillermo Mota can handle being a closer all year long. If he can, they will win the NL East by 10 games.

I've heard the streak is over every year since 1999.

I'm still waiting considering the Braves improved upon a team that won the division by 10 games this year

I'd say keeping Josh Blisters healthy is another concern.

I totally agree Frigid. Forgot to mention that, although that is an incredibly lame nickname.

The Braves improved, Bob? Dan Kolb for Jose Capellan is a downgrade, in my opinion. They lost JD Drew, who was a key ingredient in last year's team. The only significant upgrade is adding Hudson, I admit that. There's no guarantee that John Smoltz still has what it takes to be a starter.

I'm not dismissing the Braves, but I strongly believe the Marlins are the team to beat.

Or maybe it's the Phillies, they did have a busy offseason!

Cappellan wasn't very good on Atlanta, Dan Kolb was good on Milwaukee and who knows what Leo Mazonne can get out of him?

They got rid of Ortiz and have a much better rotation then they did last year- which was one of the tops in baseball.

Losing Drew sucks but the Braves will have a healthy Marcus Giles back and I think Brian Jordan and Raul Mondesi could be effective replacements. I think Jordan is happy about getting the chance to rejuvinate his career, Mondesi I'm not so sure. The Braves also have a deep farm system of outfielders they want to to out.

Smoltz has been throwing great stuff the past few years, I don't think his effectiveness will die out just because he's starting.

They fielded a much worse team last year and still run away with the title. Until they're not the division champs- don't bet against them.

Damn you Orioles- Delgado was right there!

Cappellan didn't have much of a chance and I don't think you can really judge him on so few major league apperances. On the other side of that I think Kolb is pretty good.

Losing Charles Thomas and Eli Marrero is going to hurt the outfield badly.

The main problems I see are bullpen (which has been dogshit for 2 years besides the closer and I see no signs of that changing this year) and the outfield. I think the outfield will be ok, I have faith in Brian Jordan. It's the bullpen that worries me the most, but we've managed to win the division the last two years with a god awful pen, hopefully this year makes 3. (The sad thing about the bullpen is in 2002 it was one of the best I've ever seen, and then 2003 and 2004 it was just hidious. )

My thoughts exactly.

And as for Smoltz I don't think he'll be as good starting as he's been closing the last 3 years, but given the fact that he has actively been asking to start for the last 2 years at least he should be physically up for it.

The Mets not getting Delgado will probably drive Minaya to re-open talks for the Sosa deal. Omar wanted to get the deal done a few months ago, but the Wilpons put the kabosh on it. Omar wants him in RF and if the Wilpons give the green light, I think it could get done. The one thing it would do is get Clifford Floyd of the team, that fact alone makes it a tempting deal :D

I hope the Mets get Sosa, only so they can put him in center and move Cameron to right. Cameron anywhere but centerfield is a waste, so please Mets find a reason to move him.

I want alkeiper to run his NL east simulator now and see what it turns up. An interesting exercise to say the least.

However, if he comes back still saying the Phillies, I'll discount it as anything remotely resembling reliable.

Beltran is in center

I don't know why they gave Resuckma a new deal. What sucks about 2002 is had Glavine not decided to pitch his two worst games- they could've gone pretty far.

The middle relief should've been upgraded but I think they have enough faith in the starting pitching and closer

Glavine and Sheffield are usually who I blame for that. God that's depressing to think about still to this day.

Speaking of Braves bullpens, I remember the early 90s Brave bullpens, Pete Smith, Mike Bielecki, Jay Howell, Steve Bedrosian, Alejandro Pena Greg McMichael. If they can win with those guys, they can win with Reitsma, Kolb, etc.. During the run, the Braves have never really had a truly dominant pen (except maybe 2002) They always had a group of guys that came in and threw strikes.

Ok, you're certainly entitled to that opinion. But would you care to back it up?

And, "Miguel Cabrera mocked Moises Alou in Wrigley Field last year and Jeff Loria is a jerk, so the Marlins suck!" isn't a good reason.

They can win in the regular season but it's the playoffs where the bullpen seems to come undone.

And Smues is right about blaming Gary Hitler Sheffield. I hate him to this day for his performances in 2002 and 2003 playoffs.

And Curbed- do us Braves fans have the same right? :-)
