Completely unrelated but how are the '86 Mets a "Cinderella story"? Those stupid ESPN Disney World commercials have Peter Gammons saying this. Is there a deleted scene in Cinderella where she does a lot of coke?

Buddy has a 4.03 ERA in 330 appearances with Baltimore from 2000-2004. At age 40, it's doubtful that Groom will make the team.

Big whoop. Teams are always trying senior reclaimation projects (it's low risk, if he sucks - big whoop, if he's any good - what a bargain!)

Is it possible that Gammons said '69 Mets, which legitimately was a Cinderella story, and ABC/ESPN got freaked out and edited the phrase '69?

I'd go with that, but I think they were trying to tie in Peter's Boston connection

Also in a sad way (sad in terms of the fact that it always seems to be the way the Mets are looked as) that 108 win juggernaut does tend to get looked upon as a bit "Cinderella-ish" when you consider the "luck" involved with winning key ballgames that postseason

The Mets never do "roll" through postseasons, I think only twice in their history have they've even gone 2-0 in a series! (1969 NLCS against the Braves and the 2000 NLCS against the Cardinals) Its always "interesting" and the Mets always seem to be the team with some sort of "comeback magic" in them, hence why no matter how dominate the 86 team was, it will always be seen by "mainstream media" as a "Cinderella Story"

What I find funny is that the Mets really shouldn't have been considered a cinderella team in 1986. They led the NL in RS and RA and had a 205 run differential.

1969, they were definitely a miracle team. They were 9th in the NL in RS and 2nd in RA. So, while their pitching was dominant, their hitting was very suspect.

Thank god.  I think at this point, Ramirez is the one guys on the offensive end of things that they can't let get away.  I see some big things ahead of him if he's used correctly.

"On the mound today, making his pitching debut, Aramis Ramirez!"

Well, at least we know he could take a crack at closer if Dempster doesn't pan out. :D

Great quote by AJ Burnett in the Miami Herald today...

He's talking about how disappointed he was with the contract offer he received from the Marlins...

"I was hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. Hopefully when I start the season 9-0, they'll bring me another contract."

Hah. The Marlins won't sign anybody under 30, apparently.

Devil Rays hot stove news during the Super Bowl!

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=devi...ov=st&type=lgns

ST PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday acquired lefthanded starter Casey Fossum from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. and cash considerations.

Tampa Bay also signed free agent first baseman Travis Lee to a one-year contract.

Wow. The D'backs raped the Devil Rays on that one.

Are the Devil Rays still trying to trade Aubrey Huff. Or is that just speculation on the Cubs side?

Alot of teams would love to have Aubrey or Rocco. I think the mets should go after Huff.

Why is that suck a good trade for the Rays? The only way I can see your point is the fact that Cruz is paid too much, and his talents don't back up his worth. From what I've seen, Fossum has never been able to live up to expectations in either Boston or Arizona.

My post implied that it was a good trade for the D'backs, not the Devil Rays.

Why was it a good trade for D'Backs? Cruz has .336 career OB%, and .455 slugging. He'll hit 20-25 Hr's 75-80 bi's when healthy. Fossum's an underachiever, but I wouldn't call this even a good trade for Arizona.

Fossum needed a change of scenery. He was ineffective for the Diamondbacks. In return for Fossum, the D'backs get a player who is capable with the bat, and can play center field, or left if Gonzo isn't ready for opening day. Cruz may carry a slightly above average bat, but when you lose 111 games, you learn to appreciate those average players.`
