Damaramu 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2004 Ok so I've never seen Playmakers before. Then it gets cancelled and I hear it's a good show. So I go out and rent the first DVD. I hear it was cancelled b/c the NFL got scared that it painted a bad picture of the league. The thing I'm thinking from watching it though is....isn't that what pro football is really like? I mean just from everything I've heard over the years from past players and whatnot and the numerous scandals. It just seems that's what really goes on. Did the NFL get scared that it hit too close to home? And what does everyone think of the show?
nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2004 I think the show was cool, the NFL is a bunch of bitches, and ESPN should sell the show to some other network like HBO and continue the series.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Report post Posted November 11, 2004 The show was indeed too close to home, they (NFL) tried to act like it made the NFL look bad was a complete joke. This coming from a company that has LOADS of Illegal stuff happening publically. It was a good show but not good enough for FX or Showtime or HBO to support the budget for it. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2004 Well I just finished the First Disc. I don't want any spoilers from coming discs but let me just say I HATE DH. That guy is such a fucking dipshit prick. And the drugs....there's just something I have against professional athletes and drugs like that. Well there's something I have against everyone and drugs like that. Smoking a joint is one thing....but snorting a line is an entirely different story. And I know a lot of athletes do it. But I still disagree with it and wish that they didn't. Back to DH. I dunno if the murder story continues into the second disc but I hope it does. Every episode they make it seem like he's going to quit being a prick and do the right thing.....but then he falls short.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2004 Did the NFL get scared that it hit too close to home? And what does everyone think of the show? I dug it. Dug it a lot. It was over the top, over dramatized, but yeah, it definitely hit too close to home for the NFL suits, for sure.....
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2004 I hate it. More ESPN "holier than thou" crap, who would have us believe that the athletes they lower themselves to deal with are a bunch of pricks, and we should be thankful that they (ESPN) are willing to expose the truth. I put it in the same group as Hustle.
Guest PlatinumBoy Report post Posted November 11, 2004 Eh, while bad stuff does go on in the NFL, I thought playmakers made the whole team look like a bunch of drugged out a-holes at time. For every Onterio Smith, there are guys like Warrick Dunn who are just great people. Still, the show was pretty swank.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2004 I hate it. More ESPN "holier than thou" crap, who would have us believe that the athletes they lower themselves to deal with are a bunch of pricks, and we should be thankful that they (ESPN) are willing to expose the truth. I put it in the same group as Hustle. Yeah, but a good percentage of them are pricks, and that was the whole point of the show, focusing on that percentage of guys who bend and break the rules, though obviously they amped it up a notch for dramatic purposes. They could have had a show about the mormon O-line guy, christian Safety and goody two shoes special team guy who all have wives and 2.5 kids, but what's dramatic or interesting about that. Every sports fan knows there are good guys in sports, guys who live normal lives like you and me when they're not in the spotlight, but we're more interested in exploring the psyche of the 'bad guys" or the guys who make mistakes, because it makes them more human, easier to relate to, more interesting in terms of psychological and cultural study ESPN reflects sports culture, you can argue that it focus on the bad behaviour over the good, but it didn't create or cause that behaviour, and I hardly think it celebrates it. TheBigSwigg 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2004 I thought the show was great. Not Soprano's great, but better than most of what network TV would put out. And of course they're not going to show all the good guys, where's the entertainment in that?
starvenger 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2004 I like that the players all seem to have flaws. Yes, there are NFL players that really are great people, but they're human, and while their character flaws aren't as large as the fictional ones do, they're still there, and it makes the show a little easier to relate to. BTW, Joey Jeremiah as the kicker was awesome.
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2004 It was terrible. Every "character" on the show was really just a caricature and a few stereotypes cobbled together. Every negative stereotype about pro athletes was on the show. It was yellow journalism made into a bad fiction show.
alfdogg 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2004 Maybe Omar should have stuck to Wild & Crazy Kids. Will he ever recover from this.
Jorge Gorgeous 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2004 If "Playmakers" tried to sew half the stupid shit that NFL players do into their scripts noone would even take them halfway seriously. 'Okay, in this episode the former lineman leads the police on a highspeed chase and ends up getting a fatal car crash.' 'Bullshit, Johnson. That would NEVER happen, you're fired.' Damaramu 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2004 Yeah I can't believe it's the Wild and Crazy Kids guy either. He was so likeable on that show but on this....I just want him to go away.
