snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 13, 2004 Big heavyweight 4-header ppv from Madison Square Garden tonight. I wont be watching, too broke after this week(saw Modest Mouse in NYC and Marilyn Manson in Milwaukee)...anyone here orderin this? Heres the card- John Ruiz v Andrew Golota (some title)...this is an interesting matchup, imo. Can Golota fight as good as he did against Byrd or will Ruiz frustrate him? This could be better than alot of people think. Chris Byrd v Jameel McLine (some title)...this could suck. Both have had boring fights lately and are friends. This has some entertainment potential but could be absolutely terrible. Hasim Rachman v Kali Meehan...I think this will be a good fight. Both can be entertaining, both need to win and want to prove something. Will probably be the best fight of the show. Evander Holyfield v Larry Donald...finally, a fight where Holy actually has a chance. I guess if hes gonna keep fighting its at least good that hes being matched with slower/older/softer guys like Larry 'The Legend' Donald. If I had more cash I would watch this. It might be decent. If anyones inmterested I will probably be posting results from fightnews.com and boxrec.com in this thread.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Early result, off ppv...Heavyweight contender Davarryl Williamson (he was rated by some bodies, got kod by Joe Mesi then recently looked good against W. Klitschko) won a unanimous ten round decision over former world champ and highly troubled Oliver McCall.
UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 That looks like a fucking awful card. The heavyweight division is completely in the shitter.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 I am interested to see how Byrd does. He was once the top contender in the division, but he has left alot to be desired in his recent fights.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 These fights are somewhat necessary though...the current heavyweight division is so wide-open. Fights like these are needed to see who really is #1. The past year or two has seen so many upsets, retirements, title changes, comebacks, and prospects that there is no legitimate/undisputed champ or top-10. Vitali is probably #1...but hes fighting Danny Williams in december, so that should prove little. For a better overall boxing ppv - check out Morales-Barrera 3 in a couple weeks. I will probably have a preview of that posted here in a week or so.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 I am interested to see how Byrd does. He was once the top contender in the division, but he has left alot to be desired in his recent fights. I thought he lost decisions to both Oquendo and Golota...but he got the judges nod. The Oquenda fight was abysmally boring, but vs. Golota was a FOTY candidate. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Donald beats up Holy... Former four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield was easily outpointed by Larry Donald Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Donald was simply too young, too fast and too good for the faded ring legend as he landed hard combinations almost at will. Holyfield was only able to muster one shot at a time, but showed fight fans one short glimmer of his former briliance when he rocked Donald in the tenth. Unforunately for Evander, he didn't have the energy to follow up. Donald took the last two rounds and won 119-109, 119-109, 118-109. Donald improves to 42-3-2 with 24 KOs. Holyfield falls to 38-8-2 with 25 KOs. He has now just won two of his last nine. -fightnews.com Please Evander, retire.
jimmy no nose 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Holyfield had a nice round one, then went straight down hill. There weren't any rounds after it that I didn't think were clearly won by Donald. Holyfield has been done for about 3 years now.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Youre watching Jimmy? Apparently the Donald-Holy fight was for something called the NABC belt...whatever. Hasim Rachman v Bonecrusher Meehan up now...Hasim is one of my favorite fighters.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman scored a fourth round TKO over Kali Meehan in a WBC/WBA eliminator Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Rahman took over in round two and gave Meehan a serious beating until Meehan's corner finally stopped the carnage after Meehan wobbled back to his corner after taking some serious punishment in round four. -fightnews.com
jimmy no nose 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Yeah I've been watching. The Rahman-Meehan fight was pretty good, but only got to go 4 rounds. The first two rounds seemed pretty close, but then round three Rahman really took control, and just destroyed him in round 4. The corner stopped the fight since Rahman was that dominant. Meehan struggled to even get punches off. I have no idea how he stayed on his feet.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 boxrec reported that Hasim looked to be in great shape...this true Jimmy? was the Donald-Holy fight entertaining? Or just another beatdown of a faded sad legend?
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Byrd-Mcline up now...IBF title... Who would have guessed a few years ago that Andrew Golota vs. John Ruiz would headline a major ppv?
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 IBF heavyweight champion Chris Byrd sucessfully defended his title with a twelve round split decision over Jameel McCline Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. The 270lb McCline, who came into the ring with a 56lb advantage advantage, dropped Byrd with a right hand at the end of round two and tried to take Byrd out with an all out assault in round three, however Byrd weathered the storm. By round four, however, McCline began to slow down although he continued to pound on the champion. By round seven, Byrd's quickness became more of a factor as he began to pepper the rapidly tiring McCline with combinations through round nine. McCline had a good round ten, trapping Byrd on the ropes and connecting with some hard shots. Byrd came back in the eleventh and rocked McCline then won round twelve, also. Scores were 114-112 McCline, 115-112, 114-113 Byrd. -fightnews.com Damn, thats 3 close/controversial decision wins in a row for Byrd...
jimmy no nose 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 boxrec reported that Hasim looked to be in great shape...this true Jimmy? was the Donald-Holy fight entertaining? Or just another beatdown of a faded sad legend? Rahman looked in great shape, yes. His fourth round was amazing too. Since he lost to Lennox Lewis he hasn't really looked like a former champ a lot in his fights, but during that one he showed signs that he may be a future champ. It was very impressive. The Donald-Holyfield fight was entertaining in spots. Holyfield would look like his former self for about 30 seconds at a time, then the rest of the fight you're left just thinking about what he once was vs. what he is now. Kind of sad really. The Byrd-McCline fight was very entertaining, one of those ones where you didn't have any idea which way the judges would go with it. The first half of the fight it looked like McCline had it, then the second half Byrd really turned it on. I was impressed with both fighters and wouldn't have thought it was wrong if either of them won. Ruiz-Golota is just getting started. This should be interesting. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 In a surprising twist, it sounds like Golota-Ruiz is full of fouls...
jimmy no nose 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 This is one of the more out of control fights I've seen. I'm shocked that there's only been 1 point deduction so far. The second the ref warned them there were 3 or 4 fouls in a row from the 2 of them. Golota is definitely ahead right now even if Ruiz hadn't had an extra point taken off. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Apparently Ruiz's trainer, Norm Stone, was ejected from ringside for shouting profanities at the ref... How bad was it Jimmy?
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Ruiz wins a unanimous decision... Boxrec.com had it 114-111 Golota...whatd you think Jimmy?
jimmy no nose 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 I thought Golota probably had it by a point or two because the round where he knocked down Ruiz was an almost definite 10-7 round, plus Ruiz had a point deducted. I was thinking split decision for Golota. There were several rounds that I thought were too close to call, I guess the judges all had to give all of them to Ruiz which seems strange to me. Maybe they were seeing something that I wasn't. As for the trainer getting ejected, he was just having your usual swearing freak out session at ringside, the problem was that he wouldn't stop. The ref told him he was going to be ejected and he continued on so he sent him out.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Maybe the judges were watching Ruiz's promoter combing his hair up
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Heres an AP article from cnnsi.com http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/more...s.ap/index.html Apparently the crowd was 12,777...I kinda wish I couldve just stuck around in NYC all week and bought a cheap ticket. And E vander Holyfield still refuses to retire.

There weren't any rounds after it that I didn't think were clearly won by Donald. Holyfield has been done for about 3 years now. Longer than that I'd say. He's been horrible since the first fight with Lewis and even the fight or two before that when he totally struggled against a jobber who he should've owned. Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Eh, I don't really remember the fight very much anymore. I only recall that he started looking like shit a little before the first Lewis fight.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Just before the first Lewis fight, Holy had a closer than expected decision against Vaughn Bean(tomato can). Vander was mauled in the first Lewis fight...but came back and barely lost the rematch. Next was the trilogy with Ruiz, lucky stoppage of Rachman, and beatings from Byrd and Toney...a real painful string of fights with only one really impressive performance(Lewis 2) since 1998. A six year string of beatings and embarrassments for one of the toughest and greatest fighters of all time.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2004 Well, after this PPV, here is my own top ten rankings for the heavyweight division... 1.Vitali Klitschko - He tkod Larry Donald, had a great fight with Lewis (who promptly retired), destroyed Kirk Johnson, and retired Corrie Sanders...pretty good string. Up next is Danny Williams on ppv 2.Chris Byrd - Questionable decisions over Oquendo and Golota, and I havent seen the McCline fight but noones arguing it. He hasnt lost in 4 years and really seems hungry to keep his belt. 3.John Ruiz - This guy is boring and sloppy...but he always wins somehow. Roy Jones is the only guy to really beat him since 1996 4.Hasim Rachman - If this guy is in shape he can beat anyone. Just ask Lennox 5.James Toney - Along with Byrd, hes the most talented guy in the division. His last four wins (Robinson, Jirov, Holy, Booker) have been very impressive...but hes been injury prone 6.Monte Barrett - Hes a bit of a wildcard and a journeyman...but hes looking good lately. He looked very sharp in losing conroversially to Joe Mesi (who seems to be finished) and handed Dominic Guinn his first loss. 7.Andrew Golota - An amazing comeback...he deserves one more chance after possibly getting jobbed in two straight close fights 8.Danny Williams - Virtually unknown until knocking out Tyson. Up next he gets to fight the big dog, Vitali. 9.Wladimir Klitschko - Clearly the lesser of two brothers, but if he corrects his problems he can comeback as a serious contender. His chin is very questionable. 10. Tie - Larry Donald/Vassily Jirov - Donald is far from the best, but his win over Holy will probably net him a title shot. Jirov lost to Mesi in his first heavyweight fight but may have retired Baby Joe in the process...up next is former champ Michael Moorer on FoxSportsNet.
