a short summary of events..

the pro-American candidate was projected to win by exit polls

the pro-Putin candidate won by a 49-46 margin

the first guy (Viktor Yu.) urged his supporters to engage in civil disobedience and he took the oath of office today.

So all sorts of fun is going on in the Ukraine

International observers in Ukraine monitoring yesterday's presidential elections say there were serious irregularities, and voting was far from being free and fair.

But the observers, from the European security organisation, the OSCE, did not say what affect the abuses had on the results.

The incumbent president, Leonid Kuchma, was well ahead of his only other challenger in the run-off polls, the Communist leader, Petro Symonenko.

Mr Symonenko has already protested that he would have won were it not for election fraud.

From the newsroom of the BBC World Service

There's something strange about seeing the United States back the communist party and Russia being firmly behind the incumbent democratic party.

So, is it 'Kiev' or 'Kyiv', because I've seen it both ways.

I'm confused.

I'm guessing that Ukraine doesn't transliterate very well since they use different letters and sounds than English. Same thing for Arabic.

Cerebus, never ending kudos for your(although semi obvious) Seinfeld reference.

It kinda seems like fraud but I don't really know enough about the situation to fairly comment. This takes away a bit of my previous affection for run-off elections.

Imagine if in 2000, there were four candidates for the US presidency, all with a legitimate shot at winning. (I know there were indies, green party, etc)

Florida'd still be counting votes.

Nevertheless, I still like the concept of a run-off election.

speaking of the Ukraine, has Oksana Bauel(sp?) fallen off the wagon yet?

Not sure but Dynamo Kiev won 2-0 last night so everybody should be in a jolly mood to revolt.

it's pronounced Kee-ev

I'm pretty sure it's Kee-yev, since the second vowel doesn't get devalued because it follows a vowel and thus gets pronounced 'ye' instead of 'eh'. I've just started studying Russian, so I'm not quite sure on that.

It's fairly amusing on so many levels that the US are pissed at a rigged election.

Your continued idiocy never ceases to amaze me.

Seriously, shut up. Everybody and their mother knows that the U.S. election was WON BY DUBYA. I was/am pro-Kerry. Bloody hell.

Shut... the hell... up.

This whole bit in the Ukraine is actually about democracy. The people feel that a candidate was cheated, incidentally, the Russian backed candidate won and they're refusing to look into it.

Interestingly enough, the one are currently backing is a communist candidate.

So please, doors on the left, don't let it hit you on the ass on the way out.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this bit. The people are RIOTING in favor of the candidate that lost, which is, incidentally, the same one that the US favors. So unless we've imported a bunch of special forces over there to incite riots, saying the US is manipulating this... well, it's just stupid.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the election of 2000.

In which case, he's still WRONG, but you try arguing with the lad.

I kinda thought that too, but then again, think about who we're dealing with here.

Exit polls on Sunday indicated Yuschenko, who wants to steer the country out of Russia's shadow and towards Europe, had won 54 percent of the vote compared with the 43 percent of his pro-Russia rival, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, according to the independent Razumkov Ukrainian Center for Economic and Political Studies and the Kiev International Institute for Sociology (KMIS).

But the country's Central Election Committee said on Monday that Yanukovich held a slight lead -- 48.9 percent to 47.5 percent  -- over his challenger.

Today was the first time I really watched an in-depth piece about this whole mess on the news, rather than just catch snippets of it at a time.

It's a very interesting situation going on over there, but I was more engulfed by WHAT THE HOLY HELL HAPPENED TO YUSCHENKO'S FACE?!?!?!?!??!

He says he was poisoned, and shit, I think I might have to believe him, because the dude's face is FUCKED UP now.
