Guest HeadDropMark Report post Posted November 24, 2004 Is there a source on the net tracking WWE DVD sales? I know that there was a press release a while back citing Ric Flair's DVD as the best selling in company history (at the time). I realize sales would be dynamic, but is there even general info on how well various releases have sold?
Kizzo 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 Good question...I will do some research on that...
pochorenella 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 As far as I know, Flair's set is the year's top seller, followed by WMXX and Monday Night Wars. Actually, I think I remember Linda McMahon reporting actual sales figures in one of her famous shareholders reports or something. But it would be nice to have an official source, so good luck finding the info, Kizzo. I'm looking forward to it.
Guest bort Report post Posted November 26, 2004 Check the last 3 days of articles on PWInsider, they had a report on the sales figures
Guest HeadDropMark Report post Posted November 26, 2004 I found the aforementioned pwinsider.com article. The author Mike Johnson lists a Nielsen entity called VideoScan as the source of the data. The VideoScan website does not release said data directly online and states: "Nielsen VideoScan's VHS and DVD sales charts are currently published in Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, Video Store Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and others." From the source article: http://www.pwinsider.com/ViewArticle.asp?id=6678&p=1 "With all the talk of how well the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD is selling (and their first week sales figures set to be released later this week by Videoscan), I thought it would be interesting to see what the top 10 wrestling-related DVDs are, sales wise, thus far in 2004. The sales figures listed below are from January 2004 to last week. *Wrestlemania XX -- 99,955 *The Monday Night War -- 79,543 *Mick Foley's Greatest Hits & Misses -- 49,436 *Ultimate Ric Flair Collection -- 40,518 *Hard Knocks: Chris Benoit -- 29,500 *Undertaker: He Buries Then Alive -- 26,169 *John Cena: Word Life -- 23,135 *WWE Bloodbath (Steel Cage) -- 20,678 *Survivor Series 2003 -- 25,034 *Beyond the Mat: Special Edition -- 20,429 Interesting to note is that Ring of Honor's Era of Honor Begins has moved 5,430 copies since January. Eddie Guerrero: Cheating Death, Stealing Life has moved 9,504. It should also be noted that the Undertaker DVD is a low priced re-release of an old Coliseum Video that retails from $6.50-$9.99 depending on where you can find it, comprised of matches from 1994 and 1995. For those interested in complete sales to date, The Ultimate Ric Flair Collection has moved 88, 616 copies, The Benoit DVD has moved 29,500 DVDs and 1,003 videos (wow, that genre is dead), and the Guerrero DVD has moved 9,504 DVDs/341 videos." Kizzo 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 For sales statistic you will need a subscription to billboard.com...it will lists all the sales of the DVD's from years past and to this point...
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 I'm kind of surprised that Survivor Series 2003 outsold the Royal Rumble, but I guess it was on sale for longer in 2004 since the Rumble came out a month later.
BHK 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 According to the WWE Shareholder report the Benoit DVD moved 65,000 copies.
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 According to the WWE Shareholder report the Benoit DVD moved 65,000 copies. Maybe they sold that many to different outlets, but only 20-some thousand have actually sold? I don't know.
Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 Sweet Jesus, THAT many people bought the Taker DVD?
Elbarto997 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 Either that or Vince bought it 26,000 times. Plus there's no way that WMXX/Monday Night War sold more than Mick Foley or Ric Flair's DVDs. We have WMXX which had only one great match to note, that match which is also on the Benoit DVD. And we had the sub-par extras. Monday Night War, which in all sense was innacurate, and only had 4 extra matches, with the only good ones being Booker T/Benoit, and Austin/HBK vs Owen/Bulldog. Not enough in the extras department. Then we have the Flair DVD. 10 1/2 hours of Naitch!! That's like, I dunno at least half a dozen ***** matches. It covered enough in 3 Discs, and still leaves room for a possible second volume!!!! Mick Foley's DVD which most of the matches were awesome, and a couple of ***** matches. So did Vince buy all those DVDs 50,000 times or what?
pochorenella 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 ElBarto, what you're saying makes little sense. Just because one DVD set has more "****+ matches" than any other doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna sell more copies. As far as I know, John Cena's set has extremely little in the quality match department, yet it sold mainly on Cena's popularity among the general fanbase. Also, take into account that those are 2004 sales. Flair's set was released last year around the same time as the Bloodbath DVD so it has 2003 sales to take into account, so that should make it the top seller no doubt. And regarding your Benoit and WMXX DVD comparison, the Mania set was released way before than Benoit's so if people wanted than Main Event match then they got the Mania set. WMXX was a terrific show IMO so it's no surprise to me it sold well. If anybody can post any more sales numbers that'd be great.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 The reason why the Undertaker one sold so well was because it was at a cheap price and was sold at more stores than the rest.
Guest LooneyTune Report post Posted November 26, 2004 I don't find it odd at all Flair's DVD sold better than Benoits. Flair is known by several generations of fans, and is considered one of the biggest names of all time. Benoit, although a great worker, has only been popular in the states for 10 or so years, and half of that time he was a midcarder, and mainly smarks or "smart fans" are the ones the DVD set was designed for. Monday Night Wars will sell no matter what, ditto ECW DVD. Hardcore fans love that kind of stuff.
