My gf doesn't like widescreen. She just likes the whole screen filled up, very much like my parents.

She doesn't know why, but she is not a fan of widescreen. So I had to buy SHREK 2 in fullscreen and deal with the guy at the counter go, "umm...are you aware this is fullscreen?"

To which point I had to lower my head in shame and meakly say, "yes, yes I am."

The things I do for love I swear.

It is

Have you attempted to teach her about widescreen vs. fullscreen. Sometimes side by side comparisons is all a "omg black bars" person needs.

I wish Studios would just stop appeasing these people and stop making seperate Fullscreen discs.

The existance of both makes it impossible to give such a movie to certain people as a gift idea. I'm sure we all have a relative or friends that you can't trust to buy the widescreen version.

most NORMAL people would think

"why thanks for even remembering my ass this time" and then take the "devalued" dvd back for an exchange and keep their mouths shut.

Not you or your people.

You'd likely have a outburst and verbally attack your idiot cousin in question and mock his manhood. and when you leave the rest of the family will go "Why do we invite him? oh yeah. he's stupid and bitches about the meaningless stuff like the difference between FS and WS".

I think the fact people get uppity about shit like this is criminally sad.

No one here said they verbally attack people over not buying or giving widescreen, so stop talking out of your ass. It's just the same reaction that any bad gift receives.

There's just certain people you steer away from if there's wide and full, because they're too dumb or lazy to get the right one.

People have preferences that they are "serious" about?

:gasps:

Surely you too have preferences that you're "serious" about. Perhaps mayo digusts you and miracle whip delights you, maybe the thought of driving a Ford instead of a Chevy makes you ill. Who the fuck knows, but surely somewhere there's something.

so, kindly fuck off

:tips hat:

Does anyone have a list of dvds that were released that were made for fullscreen movies instead of wide? I heard something about Ocean's 11 being shot on this Super 28 (or some random number) film that's supposed to be shown on Fullscreen.

I'd hate to buy a widescreen movie that was supposed to be seen as fullscreen.

The "omg black bars" thing has died down just in time for people buying HD tvs to start complaining about black bars down the sides of TV shows.

On my tv, I wouldn't mind the bars down the side if they were black, but stupid Samsung had to make them GRAY. You try watching tv with 2 inch gray bars down both sides of the TV, Its very distracting. Other tvs do Black bars down the sides..I don't know why Samsung felt the need to be different and go with gray.

I don't think I've ever seen a movie with subtitles in the black bars...and it doesn't bother me.

Kill Bill had them -- I watched both last night. I think this is the first time I've seen subtitles in black bard, and I liked it.

The creator of this thread probably couldn't the first widescreen v fullscreen thread because it probably came out before our Great Board Crash that Banky helped Dames out with -- I've tried searching stuff from that era and it didnt' work.

I put down widescreen, and it's my goal in life to get the better half's mom to accept widescreen. She was against DVD's for the longest time, but we got her hooked. Now comes the second part -- accepting the widescreen format...

Someone didn't complete the search, seeing how all you need to do is type in widescreen and it'll come up with the following two threads if you let the search finish.

Not that I care about posting the same thing again months later though.

As has been said, WS isn't *better* than FS, it's just all about the OAR, that's all. It isn't really all that complicated to understand.

I don't care. I hate how people get uptight about it. It doesn't really make the movie BETTER.

Widescreen if I was forced to choose would be my choice. I won't complain about watching FS. Some people would commit suicide before doing that.

I can actually think of a specific example off the top of my head where WS DOES make the movie better.

In Scream, there is a moment where the killer pops out of the closet...at least in WS he does. In FS there is no closet...just a dude entering from nowheresville.

Or...better yet...try watching a movie like Multiplicity and count how many times it has to pan and scan to catch what they want you to see. Subtlety of a situation can easily be lost when the screen has to MOVE TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING MEANT TO BE IN THE BACKGROUND.

and the pans themselves look bad. The worst one I can think of was when I was watching Cable Guy (yeah, I know), on one of the pans the video quality went from "movie being shown on cable" to "some video camera"

Yeah, she knows all about it. She doesn't know why but she likes fullscreen. She just can't get into wide, she knows that's how movies are on the big screen and shot but she said for some reason she just doesn't like it on a tv screen that way.

I've gotten to the point where I am extremely anal about my movies in widescreen. If, and only if, a movie is absolutely not available in widescreen, then I will grudgingly buy fullscreen.

Still, a high school buddy of mine prefers fullscreen, so to each his own I say.
