Ced 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2004 My only complaint is that Namco didn't make it clear enough that you're not supposed to put quarters in the card slots. I don't know how they'd have done better, but people are really fucking stupid and every machine I've heard about has been shut down at least once because of people putting quarters in there. Ours was down over an hour for that. Bah. You'd think that with the facts that 1) The card slot reads "Insert Card Here", 2) the slot's way too big for a quarter and 3) The Tekken 5 machine is in a friggin college, the problem wouldn't come up at Sac State. Naturally, the Player 1 card slot was jammed with not one, not two, but THREE quarters when I went there yesterday. Beautiful. Miraculously enough, my local Golfland, notorious for visitors treating the machines like shit (especially DrumMania), hasn't had a single problem with their T5 yet. Anya 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2004 Namco needs to install some kind of electric shock security system that would zap any moron who put gum into the slots or pulled on the sticks way too hard.
Jer 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2004 The ghost thing sounds cool, but I doubt the AI will actually work right. It doesn't, heh. It's just as bad as SC2's conquest AI. I was watching "my" Julia play, and she went two rounds without a single elbow, and most of the moves she did I hadn't done once in the 100 or so games I'd played with her. Given that half my moves are elbows, it didn't seem like it would be that hard to emulate. Blah. Namco really sucks at making AIs. Still, I guess I'm just a mark for stats and customization, even if it's kind of stupid. I mark out for things like being able to buy Julia a dumb anime-looking squirrel, heh. I do wish that you could eject your card after a win, though. Being locked into a character for an entire streak sucks, especially when the game is new and you want to experiment with different people.
Anya 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2004 It especially sucks when you're fighting scrubs and newbies. I don't want to be stuck playing as Kazuya against them, that's when it's fun to bring out Kuma and Marduk. One cool thing about the Ghost AI is that your ghost can actually earn you money. Julia's without elbows is pretty sad though. I'm sure my Kazuya will do crap like 10 strings, u/f+4 and b+14 all day. I'm going to pimp my Kazuya out in some devil gear. He'll have the third eye, the wings and the tail with his purple suit. It will rule. Oh, and his new throw looks cool. I hate the motion though. All those throws that start off with D and then go to d/f are obnoxious. Chains of Misery, Rock Bottom....they're all cool, but need a better motion. At least D is back to ducking. I hated how in T4 with crappy sticks(and what sticks are not crappy after like a day of use by little kids?) it was impossible to block low or duck. I had the machine to myself for about a hour before close. I fought Jinpachi like 10 times. He isn't really that hard, not like a SNK boss or anything, but he's probably the best boss Namco has had in a 3D fighter. His two handed strike with the huge guardstun is pretty crazy, especially if he does the fireball after it. I actually saw him do two fireballs in a row one time. I was fighting some masher and he started marking out when I parried one of the kicks in a Hwoarang canned string. He was freaking out like it was a new feature, saying it was a guard impact from SC. Was pretty depressing.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2004 Namco needs to install some kind of electric shock security system that would zap any moron who put gum into the slots or pulled on the sticks way too hard. Today I saw a "scrub" break the ball of the joystick attempting to do some cheap Paul moves. After about 5 minutes of attempting to do the Phoenix Crush move the red ball went flying. Ced 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2004 OK, I need to do a survey after tonight. Is Asuka's b+1+3 high/mid auto-counter that damn cheap? I'm being accused of being cheap for pulling it out at least three times a match.
Jer 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2004 I haven't actually seen it, but in general I'd say no. Whore that shit. Make them learn to deal with it. They'll be better for it in the long run. I want people to whore shit on me now, so that I don't lose to in a tourney.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2004 Just played it up my local arcade--yes, it finally got a new game in. A whole damn buck to play, but still... I randomly picked Asuka--apparently subbing for Jun and I was very pleased with the feel of the game. It feels a lot more like the older Tekken games (as opposed to 4) but still has lots of new techniques. I didn't get to actually play against anyone though, but the CPU was alright. I have no idea what the card system is about, so anyone wanna shed some light on that? "My only complaint is that Namco didn't make it clear enough that you're not supposed to put quarters in the card slots." I never read this part of the post when I initially checked out this thread, but I think you have to be pretty damn dumb to put the quarters in there. Yeah, instead of the LIGHTED COIN SLOTS JUST BESIDE IT! and thats why there are controller ports on the side of the machines... I can take a PS2 controller there and us it to play? Anya 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 Yes, it's ingenius. I bring mine every time. In fact I just got home from a session. God the game is so good. I think I've already spent like 50 dollars on it. As for the card system, you buy a card then pick a character and you're locked as that character. You can name them whatever you want(and change it any time) and then you get to fighting. The main goal is to win money. One player wins give very little. In two player you get at least 1,000(more if they have a high rank) for a win and 250 for a lose. You can use the money to buy items from the shop. Everytime you put the card in a little menu pops up with the shop and the name change option. The stuff in the shop are colors and extra items of clothing like sunglasses, hats, and shinguards. All this stuff is REALLY expensive. Like just a pair of sunglasses will cost 50,000 gold. The other big thing about the card is your rank. Just like VF4 it keeps track of your wins/loses and gives you a rank based on how you do. Right now my Kazuya is at something like 55 wins and 30 loses and he has a Reaper's Scythe on his back. My rank is 1st Dan. I was at 3rd Dan but was doing awful the other day and lost some demotion matches. There is also ghosts for one player. The card keeps track of how you play and what combos you use and then when someone is playing one player sometimes they'll fight the "ghost" of your custom character. It doesn't work as well as it sounds(since no AI can really mimic a human) but it's sort of interesting. If your ghost wins, you get gold. The whole card thing is pretty cool, especially if you have a group of regulars you play with. It's neat to see everyone get new items, fight over ranks and see what everyone's win/lose record is like.
Jer 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I never read this part of the post when I initially checked out this thread, but I think you have to be pretty damn dumb to put the quarters in there. Yeah, instead of the LIGHTED COIN SLOTS JUST BESIDE IT! Heh, but you can never underestimate the stupidity of the populus. Yeah, it's completely obvious that a coin is not supposed to go there, but every arcade that me or my friends have been to has at some point had the machine shut down because of quarters jammed into those things. It's not Namco's fault, though. People are just really stupid. Does anyone know how the ranks work after 1st Dan? Is it still experience based but more experience between ranks, or is it like VF4's nonsense where you have to beat 5 people of the exact same rank to move up? I'm really hoping it's still just experience based, because otherwise it's going to be really hard to find people of the exact right rank once you get to 3rd or 4th Dan. Anya 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I think it's the same as the others, but it just takes longer. There's like 6 of us that play T5 and only 2 of us are at Dan and we've both been past 1st Dan without playing anyone else. It just took forever to go up. But I read at TZ that for the ranks after Dan you might have to play people with a higher rank.
Ced 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I saw a guy going by the screenname "Somm Williams ZU" with a Shidan rank. I challenged him and promptly got my ass handed to me, so I suppose that's a good ranking. I love that you can put up to 20 characters in your screenname. I put in the appropriate "First Round Fodder" for my Asuka.
Anya 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2004 Jer, have you played as Roger, Anna or Baek yet? We should get them Thursday or Friday. The next set of characters is Wang, Bruce and Kuma. Yay for the return of Bruce. Though apparently the knees don't do as much damage and 3,2,1 doesn't launch anymore. So, uh, what's the point of a Bruce return now? Wow, so they've practically ripped off Sega's entire concept right there and then, hey? Can't blame them really, it's an awesome idea to add hours upon hours of replay ability. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 What's it running on, incidentally? IOW, how close can we expect the PS2 version to work. T1 and T2 were basically arcade perfect since it was practically the same hardware, ditto for TTT I think, but isn't T5 running on a new board?
Anya 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Tekken and T2 ran on system 11, which was basically PSX. Tekken 3 ran on System 12 which was an enhanced PSX, which is why the T3 PSX port wasn't arcade perfect. TTT ran on System 12 too. The arcade version looks NOTHING like the PS2 one. The arcade TTT looks like a PSX game. It has the same graphics as Tekken 3. Tekken 4 ran on System 246, which was basically a PS2. T5 is on a modified 246, 258. So basically we can expect a Tekken 3 style port. Not PERFECT, but very close. In a recent interview they said it'd be as close as possible. I don't really have any doubts about that. All the Tekken ports have been great.
Jer 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I haven't tried any TRCs yet. We don't have the game within two hours of campus, so I can only really play during breaks. My last day of finals was today, though, so I'll get to play it tomorrow, and then all during break. Yay. Namco did more or less rip off Sega's concept, but they're the first ones to bring over to the US. Only Japanese VF4 cabinets had the cards.
Ced 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Jer, have you played as Roger, Anna or Baek yet? We should get them Thursday or Friday. Baek got alot of play with our first time release tonight. Damn, I don't know what I love more: Feng's pimp suit or Baek's old man suit.
Anya 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Tekken needs more suit outfits. I love them. Baek's is cool, with the hat. Pics.... Bruce looks a lot better than he used to, but what's with the massive shoulders? Kuma actually looks like a bear now. Supposedly f+1's range is bad and JF Salmon Hunter is gone......why does Namco always screw Kuma?
Ced 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2004 OK, I'm pissed. Neither of the T5 card slots have been working the entire week since everytime they clear out the token(s) in the slots, another one appears to jam it up within 24 hours. It's gotten to the point where the arcade attendants have almost given up on fixing them. So much for the miraculous run of having the card slots working. Either people are being assholes or stupidity is running rampant. Either way, I might just lynch the next person I see placing a token anywhere near the card slots. Anya 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2004 That's just sad. Roger is really cool. I like how Namco has reanimated a ton of his moves and given him a bunch of animal like new moves. He actually feels like a real character now instead of a novelty old school King clone.
Ced 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2004 I just wish Roger Jr. would actually do more than pose in the pouch and maul people during the huracanrana grab. Though watching a kangaroo do a wall jump into a crossbody block for no apparent reason made my night. Can't wait for the Roger Jr. vs Kuma T5 battle.
Anya 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2004 The latest issue of Arcadia says Ganryu, Mokujin and Devil Jin are the next TRCs after Kuma, Wang & Bruce. So again Duk's list has been 100% right. Basically means it's almost guarunteed Heihachi is the next and last.
Jer 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2004 Roger Jr seems cool, but I haven't seen anyone use him effectively yet. I wonder how good he actually is. From what I've seen of him (admittedly played mainly by scrubs), he's got some range problems. Baek seems really solid though, and he looks badass too. Still waiting for the second batch of TRCs here. I really want to play Wang. I love his 1P outfit in that pic, and some of his new moves in Catlord's video look awesome. Until then, I'll mess around more with Raven. I'm really liking him so far. His crouch dash mixups are soo good. I agree that Kuma needs to be top tier sometime. He's been held down for far too long.
Anya 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2004 We still haven't got the second TRCs either. I'm very hyped for Bruce. I can't wait to check out his cheese......uh...new tactics and strategies. I've played as Roger a ton since we got him. His uf+3+4 new stomp is actually useful and his new string is pretty good for juggles or after ss+4 and db+3. It seems a lot harder to do the animal godfist in juggles though. He's fun to play, but I really doubt anyone is going to be able to get very far with him. The wall damage and damage in general is just crazy. EVERYONE is doing 50%+ juggles. Most of the time it's fine, and I do like how throws do a lot more now, but sometimes rounds will be over before you know it. What sucks is when faced with new stuff. Especially long stringy type moves from someone like Asuka or Feng. I don't know the moves very well so it's hard to defend and it can cost you like half your life. It reminds me of when Eddy was new in 97. I've played as Raven a few times lately. Without any practice, FAQ reading or strat threads. I probably have the worst Raven of all time. d/f+2, BK 1+2 and d/f+4, ff2 are my elite top tier juggles.
Ced 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2004 Man, I must still be a newbie since I only have some basic juggles in my Asuka moveset. I'm spending alot of time watching for openings for her d/f+1+2 low parry/mid attack and b+2+4 mid/high counter and trying to defend strings in general.
Jer 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2004 Yay, we got the second set of TRCs today! Played a little Wang. He seems cool. Lots of his moves were reanimated, which is nice, makes him feel more different from Julia. I wasn't expecting him to be there, so I didn't have a movelist or anything, so I still need to try most of his new stuff. Played Kuma once accidently. He looks good, but he feels as sluggish as usual and has deceptively bad range. Poor Kuma. Unconkable's Raven FAQ is really good if you want to learn him. I was really glad to see that a top player had made a FAQ for him. It's a whole lot easier to learn that way than to try to dig through a bunch of strat threads with contributions from people who may or may not know what they're talking about. I use ff3, 1, b+2,2,3 off of wr1 and 1, b+2,2,3 off of ff3, they're both easy and decent damage. My juggle off of launchers into BK is an awe-inspiring 4, heh. Need to work on something better there. Anya 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2004 See anything with Bruce? I heard the knees do disappointing damage, which makes no sense with T5's damage settings. Does Kuma still have the properties of a fat character? Like does he not launch up as high?
Jer 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2004 All I saw of Bruce was some masher playing him. I think I saw his d/f+1,2 hit both hits and not launch. It could have been some other move that looked similar, though. I'll probably play with him a bit tomorrow. I only played as Kuma once, and didn't see for sure how he acted. I'd think he probably would have big character properties, but I don't know for sure.
