Notre Dame fires Willingham

Recommended Posts

He didn't deserve it - at all.

With that schedule and their tough academic standards, I highly doubt anyone will ever suceed at Notre Dame again.

Well, the stage is pretty much set for Urban Meyer to swoop in, considering that Notre Dame is one of the three schools who job he can take at no penalty to himself. Hope Utah has someone else lined up...

This is some bullshit. I thought he was a decent enough coach, but I hate ND so.............hopefully they will fall even further through the depths of college football.

ND did the right thing... but I can already here Wilbon huffing and puffing.

I can't wait to watch PTI today. Wilbon will go on and on and on about Willingham getting canned, and Tony will just sit there and egg him on. It'll be great.

No he won't, cause Tony didn't believe Notre Dame had any right to fire Ty.

And I agree with both of them. ND has never fired someone before honoring their first contract, it just has never been done.

This is a weak firing and considering that schedule, ND was lucky they won the games they did.

Horrible, horrible decision. Willingham will either end up back at Stanford or will be in the running for the Gator position. Hell, he might even step up at Utah.

Personally, it seemed that Ty didn't do that bad a job. He'll just go somewhere else, do a good job there, and ND will go down the shitter.

Win-Win situation for everyone...

The thing is I don't want ND to go down the toilet cause that would mean they would take Meyer with them.

Willingham is a great coach, I still believe that and the fact he got tossed in the path of a freight train and nearly got the school through with their legs still attached is a statement. The problem is the boosters didn't like him and at ND now, they control the school more than any program in college.

Texas should fire Brown and hire Ty. Mack Brown has been giving more chances to win the big ones than should be humanly acceptable. Let Brown go to Cleveland where they know they won't win the big one but at least playoffs would be more than acceptable.

Personally I wouldn't mind Pitt firing Walt Harris for Ty........but that won't happen now.

I do... :P

Oh I want THE SCHOOL to go down, but not Meyer.

Notre Dame can sink like a rock for all I care, just not taking Meyer with them.

What did Willingham do exactly? Made Stanford decent. Guess that counts for something, but it doesn't mean he'll work out at a better program. From what I saw, Notre Dame wasn't getting better. They beat Michigan because Michigan wasn't ready for the game, and always finds ways to lose to N.D. in South Bend. They beat a Tennessee team who almost lost to Vandy, and Kentucky and it took a horrible interception by Clausen to give Notre Dame the win.

Hey its just big time college football these days. I disagree though that a coach, cannot turn around a once great program, Bob Stoops & Pete Carroll anyone?

I think whoever would have stepped in after Davies since they were technically the second chioce after the O'Reilly debacle.

Sorry I meant O'Leary, must've said O'Reilly since I was watching Oz last night.

Today's PTI was giving me Laker flashbacks from the Spring. I hate when they devote 3 or 4 segments of the show to the same topic. I just FF through it all because Wilbon had set the whole thing up as racially motivated since the loss to BYU.

I thought the TW fact sheet produced by NDNation.com would be a good read:

THE TY WILLINGHAM FACT SHEET:

1. Tyrone Willingham has lost 8 games by at least 3 touchdowns. By

comparison, Bob Davie lost 4 games by 3 touchdowns and Gerry Faust lost 3

games by 3 touchdowns. That means that in 3 years Tyrone Willingham has

lost more games by 3 touchdowns than Bob Davie and Gerry Faust did in

their 10 years combined.

2. Notre Dame was shut out by at least 30 points twice in 2003. The

last time that happened was 1904.

3. In Tyrone Willinghams first 3 years, Notre Dame has lost by at

least 30 points 5 times. For perspective, in the previous 40 seasons

(1961-2000), Notre Dame lost by at least 30 points a total of 4 times. Bob

Davie only lost by 30 points 1 time, as did Gerry Faust.

4. The 38-12 loss to 6-6 Syracuse was Notre Dames first 3 touchdown

loss to an unranked team since 1960.

5. From the 44-13 loss to Southern Cal in 2002 until the 20-17 loss to

a 5-6 Brigham Young team, Notre Dame lost 10 games over a 15 game

stretch. That was the worst 15 game stretch since 1960.

6. Tyrone Willingham is the first Notre Dame coach since Joe Kuharich

(17-23) to have fewer wins by 3 touchdowns (5) than he had losses by 3

touchdowns (8). Bob Davie had twice as many 3 touchdown wins as losses

(8 wins, 4 losses). Gerry Faust had over 4 times as many (14 wins, 3

losses).

7. In 2003, Tyrone Willingham became the first Notre Dame coach to have

consecutive 4 TD losses to Southern Cal. In 2004, he had his 3rd in a

row.

8. Tyrone Willingham has been a Notre Dame coach for 3 years out of the

schools 117 years (2.6% of the seasons) and has coached in 36 of Notre

Dames 1,106 games (3.3%), however, he has coached in 23.8% (5 out of

21) of Notre Dames losses by at least 30 points.

9. After starting out 8-0, Tyrone Willinghams record since has been

13-15.

10. When Tyrone Willingham took over, Notre Dame had the #1 all time

winning percentage, with a record of 781-247-42 (.749), ahead of

Michigans 813-265-36 (.746). At the end of the regular season of 2004,

Michigan now has the #1 all time winning percentage, with a record of

842-274-36 (.747) while Notre Dame is #2 with a record of 802-261-42 (.745).

Some miscellaneous stats:

Three Notre Dame opponent records have been set in the last 3 years:

The idea that this is racially motivated, while predictable, is still ridiculous.

Tyrone Willingham is doing a very mediocre job at Notre Dame, and they probably have a chance to pick up one of the five best coaches in the country in Urban Meyer. This is way more reasonable than the Frank Solich firing, and is ultimately probably the right decision for Notre Dame.

If anything, I'm surprised they had the balls to fire him, when they had the tradition, and when the media was so obviously receptive to a black head coach.

Well on one hand I think it's crappy that he wasn't able to get his full recruiting class but on the other hand he hasn't been doing a good job and had 1 losing season and another terrible one this year.

Is it him?

Is it the schedule?

I don't know.

I know I was crying for his head during the USC game but stepping back and thinking about it I honestly don't know what I think about this.

It's somewhat the schedule, but it's got to be him, too. Like Vern said, the big Tennessee and Michigan wins this year seem like aberrations; getting whacked by BYU and Pitt suggests that the team isn't consistent enough to always get by the little guys. Until they can always beat those teams and sometimes pull ahead of the Michigans and USCs, Notre Dame's going to be playing 6-5 and 7-4 ball at best.

If it wasn't for NBC i'd say Notre Dame would be wise joining a conference. The mystique doesn't exist, and maybe Meyer or whoever brings it back, but it might bring back some life it they join the Big East (much more in need of ND), or Big 10 which makes or sense geographically. Plus ND has a tradition with a lot of the schools in the conference.

Yeah, but if you think about it, they lost to BC and Pitt this year. Are they really better off being lumped in with all the other shitty teams that couldn't win the Big East than they are being the only major independent, and going 6-5 with the "toughest schedule in America." I don't think so.

If they rebuild the program first, then I could see them wanting to join the Big Ten, but the first year they're not competitive in a mediocre conference, the remainder of the Notre Dame mystique that does still exist will be shattered forever.

If they join the Big East next year they'd get whacked by U of L. And Pitt too most likely.

Am I the only one here who is gonna just come out and say they never wanted a black coach to begin with, but basically HAD to hire him when George O'Leary was exposed? I actually agree with Wilbon on that part.

Are you kidding, this is a fucking shitty firing and Notre Dame can burn in hell now for all I care. They fired a coach with a winning record who is just starting to get the players HE recruits into the program. Yeah the BYU and Pitt losses were shitty but that is irrelevant, Willingham was brought in to change the style of play at ND and he never really got the chance. Hell, with that team they still beat Michigan and Tennesee whether they were "ready to play" or not thats quite an accomlpishment considering how green that team was. If I'm Urban Meyer I'm staying the hell away from South Bend cause they'll take him down too.
