He does look like a young Johnny Cash, though. Joaquin is a surprisingly decent actor when he puts his mind to it, I have faith in him.

Well, a year ago, would you have bought Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles?

 

I'm not a big fan of Joaquin Pheonix, but he may be able to do something good with this role.

Not that bad of a resemblance, not as good as Will Smith's look of Ali, but up there. I think Phoenix could pull this off provided he has a good script, which judging by the last two big biopics, Ray & Ali, is not likely.

Edit: I meant "Carter" not "Carpenter." I tend to thinkof her as June Carpenter b/c my favorite duet of her and Cash is "If I was a Carpenter"

Let me acknowledge that a person choosing the actor to play themselves means absolutely nothing as far as the validity of the choice. Allow me a rare Simpsons reference: "It's obvious it should be... Gary Oldman!"

Ray Charles DID approve of Jamie Foxx. He screened the movie...and I guess he liked what he heard.
