Your Paragon of Virtue Posted December 15, 2004 Report Posted December 15, 2004 Herring gone to K1, check MMAWeekly. I'm mixed on this for now. I've heard rumours around the net of BJ being on UFC 51 fighting for a number one contender spot for the WW Title.....against Trigg. If you know how Trigg feels about BJ, this one could be great. It could be fake too, but hey I saw pictures of Dana, BJ, AND Matt Hughes together at the last Superbrawl show, so it's not completely out there. Sylvia did murder him by the way, Sims was embarrassed, even after the fight. Why am I the only one posting in this thread these days?
RavishingRickRudo Posted December 15, 2004 Author Report Posted December 15, 2004 Penn getting a #1 contenders shot doesn't make sense.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted December 16, 2004 Report Posted December 16, 2004 Penn getting a #1 contenders shot doesn't make sense. No, it doesn't, but it was reported on FightSport, and I guess upon ditching the UFC they feel Penn needs to earn the shot, or something.
Guest Deft Posted December 16, 2004 Report Posted December 16, 2004 Kind of off topic but I'm still sad that Barnett will be out for 5+ months. He's probably my favorite fighter. I'm guessing the earliest he'll be able to fight is maybe on the June or August show. He's got a new commentary up with pics of his surgery. www.joshbarnett.tv
RavishingRickRudo Posted December 16, 2004 Author Report Posted December 16, 2004 Updated the card. Well... Leko/Minowa is sorta int'restin..
RavishingRickRudo Posted December 16, 2004 Author Report Posted December 16, 2004 And god bless Josh Barnett, the dude is such a geek.
RavishingRickRudo Posted December 16, 2004 Author Report Posted December 16, 2004 http://www.pridefc.com/pride2004/index_e.htm Sweet.
Guest Army Eye Posted December 17, 2004 Report Posted December 17, 2004 The scary thing about Silva/Sakuraba IV, aside from the obvious, is this: If you look at Silva's recent fights, it seems like every knockout gets more brutal and violent then the last. What happened to Quinton, who is one of the best and toughest fighters in the world, was truly one of the sickest scenes in MMA. Let's all join hands and hope for Sak not to get massacred!
AboveAverage484 Posted December 18, 2004 Report Posted December 18, 2004 K-1's NYE card is looking pretty good right now: Le Banner vs. Sapp Sefo vs. Goodridge Masato vs. Kid Yamamoto Herring vs. Greco I could care less about Royce/Akebono, but I'd still recommend watching it in a train wreck kind of way.
the pinjockey Posted December 18, 2004 Report Posted December 18, 2004 Two more fights (well, one and a half) added to the card. - Yoji Anjo (Japan) vs. Ryan Gracie (Brazil) - Ryo Chonan (Japan) vs. TBA
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 That TBA facing Ryo is A. SILVA~!!! My goodness. Just when you thought this card couldn't get any better, they added Jens Pulver. Then Yuki Kondo. Then Anderson Silva. Seriously, I am speechless on the quality of this card.
Guest JebusNassedar Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Hey, I updated my sig with the pic and retarded comment first! Regarding the poster; those are some big fucking belts. Regarding the card; I honestly never doubted it'd be bad. The ME is Fedor/Nog 3. How can that not be good? Well, another cut. Edit: Wait a minute. Yuki Kondo? Kondo =/= Anjo. EDIT2: Let's make a bet. name any number from 1 to...24 (All the fighters in matches, plus Mauro/Bas). I choose 3. The number represents how many people come out in Santa hatts/christmas gear. If your number is the number (or closer than the other guys), you choose some dumbass stip for me. If I'm closer, you cant buy anything EA made for a year. Or, alternatively, 6 months, and must call anyone buying EA products a sinner.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 I didna ssee your picture. Official card finalized: Ryo Chonan vs Anderson Silva Youji Anjou vs Ryan Gracie Ikuhisa Minowa vs Stefan Leko Giant Silva vs Choi Mu Bae Makoto Takimoto vs Sentoryu Jens Pulver vs Takanori Gomi Yuki Kondo vs Dan Henderson Kazushi Sakuraba vs Wanderlei Silva Rulon Gardner vs Hidehiko Yoshida Kevin Randleman vs Mirko Filipovic Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Fedor Emilianenko I am not exaggerating when I say that the bottom six matches on that list are ALL main event calibre. Some others are interesting, some won't be shown thankfully. Best Card Ever. Even if say three matches disappoint, and have freak endings, this will still be the best Card Ever. You're taking main events from other cards, like Nog-Fyodor and Silva-Saku, and just throwing as much shit together as possible. God Damn.
Lei Tong Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 "So I am going to an event called PRIDE Man Festival 2: 'SODOMY' to see a bunch of big sweaty guys in their underpants roll around on top of each other. I'm starting to get a bit worried, but I think, 'nah, just a bunch of coincidences. nothing untoward going on here...' Then the reveal the official 'PRIDE Man Festival 2: SODOMY' mascot image art. I kid you fucking not..." -SpacePotato
Guest JebusNassedar Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Sadame. It's just pronounced Sodomy.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Yeah that's what I thought, but I didn't know what Sadame actually meant. What does it mean anyway?
Guest JebusNassedar Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 In this case, I am assuming it means Destiny.
RavishingRickRudo Posted December 22, 2004 Author Report Posted December 22, 2004 It does mean Destiny. ... I was hoping the Sodomy thing never came up.
Styles Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 SAKURABA OFF THE SHOW!?! 12/26/2004 1:37:00 AM Sakuraba-Silva update [email protected] Pride will be holding a press conference in approximately three hours with Kazushi Sakuraba, which it is expected by several with close ties to the promotion to be the announcement Sakuraba is off the New Year's Eve show. Pride has been trying to contact potential replacements for Wanderlei Silva's opponent. It is also known the Fuji TV Network is very unhappy with this turn of events, because there doesn't appear to be any potential opponent for Silva that can draw the ratings needed in a one-night war that Sakuraba could, and this was considered a key match in the war. Shit, I know the outcome was inevitable and it's for his best interest health wise, but it was a marquee match that I was getting pumped for hoping he could pull it off. Oh well, I wonder what happened? They just going to throw a piece of meat at Silva like UFC did with Tito? UPDATE: well, a retro-update, anyway. Looks like it's his back. From Dave's Saturday update: Wanderlei Silva has been told it is not certain if the Kazushi Sakuraba match will take place due to Sakuraba's back injury. No official announcement has been made about this of yet. Silva is going to Japan. There are two questions here, one of which is when and if (if it hasn't been made already) the final decision will be made, and more, if Sakuraba can't fight, who can they get to fight Silva on a few days notice that would at least be enough of a name. Oh well, I guess we'll have to live with 3 main event matches instead of 4...
the pinjockey Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 Switch Henderson into the fight with Silva and find someone to replace Hendo's spot (should be much easier to find someone to fill that slot as opposed to fight Silva on short notice). Oh, and thank god Saku is out. No need to see him die.
Styles Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 It's official: It is official that the Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Wanderlei Silva match is off. Pride held a press conference a few hours ago announcing Sakuraba can't go due to both his lower back sprain as well as broken ribs suffered on 12/17 that had been covered up publicly until earlier today. Nobuyuki Sakakibara said they are considering two of three different opponents, both Japanese and foreigners, to face Silva on just a few days notice for the New Year's Eve show. Silva, who does have a hand injury, but claims he's 100% now, will be arriving at Narita Airport later today. Kazuyuki Fujita, Dan Henderson, Rulon Gardner and Kevin Randleman will also be arriving later today.
Guest Deft Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 Rumored replacements: Igor Kharitnov Kikuta
Styles Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 Rumored replacements: Igor Kharitnov Kikuta Never heard of the 3rd but he first 2 would be good choices if they'd take it.
AboveAverage484 Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 Kikuta: One of the best ground fighters in the world. Won the Abu Dabhi open-weight class tournament and he's only 185 lbs.
Lei Tong Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 Actually, Kikuta competed in ADCC twice, losing the opening round of 1999's >99kg class to Rigan Michado, then winning the >88kg division in 2001. He competes anywhere from 195-199lbs, but could arguably make 185lbs. I wouldn't flat out call Kikuta one of the best ground fighters in the world, but definitely has awesome ground control. Unfortunately, lately his finshing skills have made him reminiscent of Ricardo Arona without the size, strength or striking power. Conventional wisdom says that if Kondo could survive on the ground with Kikuta and come back to obliterate him standing, Silva will do the same.
Styles Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 Latest from Dave: The two names legitimately in the running for Wanderlei Silva's opponent for New Year's Eve are Sanae Kikuta and Mark Hunt. The problem is, Kikuta had trimmed down to 189 pounds because K-1 was talking with him about a match with B.J. Penn, so he's too small for Silva. Hunt, who Pride was trying to get to fight Kiyoshi Tamura, believe it or not, is far too big for Silva, as he's around 280 pounds right now, and it would take a submission to beat him.
AmericanDragon Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Silva vs Hunt is listed on the Japanese Pride site.
AboveAverage484 Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Silva vs. Hunt is all but confirmed now; check this out:
