I just got done watching the Bret/Backlund submission match, and I tell ya, Owen was such a great heel during the time period. The heel heat that Owen got was so insane, it had to reach HHH & Stephanie 2000 levels. After the match, when Owen stopped crying, dove into the ring, grabbed the towel, and left, the crowd in San Antonio, Texas immediately knew that Owen had swerved everyone. I remember hating Owen with a passion at that time, and wanting Bret to get revenge on him for what he did to Stu & Hellen Hart, and how he coaxed them into throwing in the towel to cost Bret the WWF Title.

But, like I said before, the heel heat that Owen Hart got back then had to have reached Triple H 2000 levels. What do you guys think?

On a similar note, that Submission Match at the Survivor Series show is one of the most under rated and forgotten world title matches ever. That match is awesome.

Amen to that. Love Bret vs Backlund.

People probably shit on it for going nearly 40 minutes with the last 6-7 of it being the Chicken-Wing spot...which was probably the most important part of the match, thanks to the conflict outside the ring with Owen, Stu and Helen.

I agree, owen was probably the most hated heel at the time, i still say, if he was still alive, he would have been world champion by now

Never in a million year's would Owen have been champ if not for his death. Like BL said, the only viable time for him to have had a run would have been in 94.

Personally I didn't even totally buy Owen as a threat then, despite his huge heel heat and most definatly not at any other time of his career. It's like Jeff Jarrett being a world champ... it just wouldn't have felt right. Don't know why.

Owen Hart's only chance at the World Title post Bret-feud was after the Montreal Screwjob... and they managed to screw that up. After that, he was back to the midcard where he put on good-great performances.

Giving Owen the belt in 1998 would've been horrible for business.

The most Shawn should've given him was a title match where Hunter intefered and cost Owen the belt.

can't understand a word you just said. Pass 6th grade before you post.

As for this; This was a masterpiece acting job from Owen here and let's give credit to Stu and Helen Hart as well. This was a brilliant angle and match. Everything about this match was done perfectly; the 36 minutes of great old school work, the fantastic acting from Owen here playing uber-heel, Bulldog's refusal to throw the towel by biting through it and the whole chase segment with Owen and Bulldog. Owen's "face" turn was a thing of beauty.

This; after 1994 KOTR Speech and Canadian Stampede was Owen's defining moment as a performer.

It's amazing how Owen; whom never won the World Title had so many classic moments

Did he deserve a title reign? I thought so, but the character he had in 1994 was that of a whiner and I doubt with the title he could have kept the character. The Uber heel in 1997 was great but was behind Bret's shadow once again and Shawn was in line anyways.

I always thought Owen should have been the hired gun by Vince considering he was the one who came the closest to ending Austin's career but sadly Owen was forced into mid-card/tag teamer status for the remainder of his shortened career.

Huh?

While I don't know if Owen should've been given the belt in late 97-early 98 I don't get why the WWF dropped the ball on an HBK v. Owen feud. Sounds pretty stupid to me

Shawn; I'm sure balked at the idea. Instead of a superhot Owen/Shawn showdown at "DX in your house"...they went with the stupid Shawn/Shamrock heatless showdown.

That actually happened. At one point, Vince called out Owen (who had been doing sneak attacks from the crowd on DX) and told him to basically quit doing that. He then booked him in a title match against Shawn on Raw, where HHH promptly whacked him with a crutch to cost him the match.

Shawn told Vince he didn't trust Owen not to take liberties on him.

Beat me to the punch, Loss ... and as little as I like Shawn, I have to say that I agree. Would anyone really trust a person that knows you screwed their brother over?

I know, no one could ever talk Vince into throwing money away for petty political reason.

Owen's problem is that the only good single's angle he was ever involved in was his fued with Bret...take that away and he's no better than Val Venis, unfortunantly...

The (brief) Owen v. Shawn feud in 95-96 was pretty good. Owen got some good heat by KOing Shawn with the enziguri (yes, it was fake if anyone doesn't know).

Owen seems to get great heat with injury angles, especially real ones like the tombstone to Austin at Summerslam 97 situation. Of course, the blow-off was Owen getting cheered at Survivor Series, until Austin won and the crowd suddenly became retarded.
