Special K 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I think it's funny that people came in and immediately did the knee-jerk "should be a better parent!" spiel. Um, isn't that sort of what she was trying to do?

Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 *News Flash* This just in folks! Breaking news! The American Civil Liberties Union takes up *unpopular* causes! Wait, there's more! Conservatives do not like the ACLU! This could be huge, folks. More on this at 11.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I'm not conservative and even I don't like the ACLU. They used to be a great group and now they just feel like they are stuck on April Fool's Day. At the age of 14, you don't have a license. You can't get a job. You are still a kid. Until you get a license, the only time you should be allowed privacy are bathroom and getting dressed. Other than that, you deserve none. If the girl was 16/17, then maybe they had a case. But this one is bull to the max. The ACLU is alot like the NAACP now. They USED to fight for good causes, now they are just spinning wheels and looking worse.
Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I didn't say that there weren't non-conservatives who didn't like the ACLU. At least they're consistent and not afraid to defend even the most unpopular groups or people. I agree, though, that parents should be allowed to listen in on their children. And I support the ACLU's opposition to the Patriot Act and their campaign against secrecy, surveillance, and the stifling of political dissent. Their "wacky" stories seem to get more press, though. Special K 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 ^^^ Made my post for me, pretty much word-for-word. The ACLU was a vital organization, but I believe there just aren't many valid causes for them to take up nowadays, since they did a good job back in the 60's and 70's. Now they essentially fight so that very thin-skinned people never ever are uncomfortable. They have gone from fighting for equality and freedom to fighting for conformity. I personally think I'm pretty liberal, socially. That doesn't mean I throw all practicality out the window. Parents need to be able to parent. Hopefully that shouldn't include invasion of privacy, but if it does, so be it. If despite my best efforts, I suspected my kid was doing drugs, as long as he or she is living in my household I should be able to check their room for it, or listen to sketchy conversations. As I said, hopefully it shouldn't come to that, but I'd rather do that than have my kid sent to Juvy or kicked out of school, or have their transgressions blamed on me. I swear. In 10 years the gay cause will have fared well and the ACLU will be left trying to prevent people from wearing rosaries and yamakas to try to justify their existence. Guest Smues Report post Posted December 16, 2004 This ruling is crap. Besides that, just chop off WA west of the Cascades, us folk on the eastern side aren't so crazy.
Special K 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Whatever. Seattle rules, besides the politics. I would say cut off Texas for its politics, but you know what? Texas is a badass place, and many of my best friends in college were from there. Politics are overrated. And Eastern Washington is dull as dirt, though pretty. Lando Griffin 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 The ACLU fights for separation of church and state, so they aren't all bad. Though this ruling eats it hard.
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 So when did it become illegal for parents to parent their children? When do-gooders started calling the police because some parent they'd never met actually spanked their child for acting like a miscreant. It's all gone downhill from there. Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 When do-gooders started calling the police because some parent they'd never met actually spanked their child for acting like a miscreant. It's all gone downhill from there. How many here were spanked has lads? Everyone seems to be around the age, were spankings occured and people didn't bitch about it. My old man let me have it, when I acted like a little shit. Lord knows i was asking for it, talking back to my mom, throwing tantrums and just causing trouble. Special K 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I occasionally got a good whipping, but I had to be a prick to get one. It was pretty rare. Dad was cool though. Once it was over, it was over. It didn't get brought up and he'd act cool to you.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2004 My old man was a genius in the sense that when it came time for my whipping, he had this stick with a nail through it. When he'd go strike me with it he'd have the nail pointing my way, but when it got out of my line of sight he'd flip the wrist so the nail would point the other way. I always kept thinking the nail was going in me. That was more scary than the actual beating itself...

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted December 18, 2004 I think almost everyone that was born before about 1985 or so got spanked at some point. Anyone get the classic belt whipping when they were really being a little shit?

Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 18, 2004 Anyone get the classic belt whipping when they were really being a little shit? I just got backhanded or slammed into things until the bruising became noticable and I was in school. That's when they started locking me in my bedroom and I would take a nap to show them who's boss! Guest BDC Report post Posted December 18, 2004 Belt? Check. Wooden spoon? Check. There are times when flat out nothing else works. I think I'd look at someone that wanted to drag me to jail for it, then whip the hell out of them with a belt.

Slayer 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2004 The irony is funny 1. Child misbehaves 2. You attempt to punish your child Which one does Mr. PussyPants have the problem with? Right. I think my parents must have forseen this though, because I was never physically punished in public, but they at least put the fear into me that I knew what would happen behind closed doors at our house. Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted December 18, 2004 Yeah, these "we don't spank our kids" people drive me nuts. They sit there and brag about how good they are as parents while their little bastard of a child is torturing the family pet or burning the neighbors house down behind their backs. EDIT: When I worked at a summer camp I hated the parents that would brag about how well behaved their kid was because without fail that would be the worst one all week. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2004 I think the problem with the Fauwells and Robertsons of the world is that they cherry pick which ACLU cases they tend to put the spotlight on. The ACLU has gone to court to fight for the right for many people to express their religious convictions. If you don't believe me go to google and look up some for yourself. This whole "all we wanted to do was give out candy canes" rhetoric is bullshit, as the ACLU fought FOR the children's right to hand out candy canes with religious notes inside the wrapping, as long as it was done before school.
