Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Link Yanks reach a deal for Randy BY JON HEYMAN STAFF WRITER December 16, 2004, 8:39 PM EST The Yankees have reached agreement on the principal players in a three-team blockbuster trade that would land them coveted lefthander Randy Johnson, Newsday has learned. A few details have yet to be worked out, but indications are they are not big enough obstacles to kill the deal. The Yankees would receive the 41-year-old Johnson in the deal while sending pitcher Javier Vazquez and two minor-league prospects, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan, to the Dodgers, according to an Arizona source. The Dodgers would send pitchers Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban and outfielder/first baseman Shawn Green to Arizona to complete the deal. Johnson and Green both have no-trade clauses. Johnson has been requesting a trade to the Yankees for quite a while, so he will surely give his OK. Green's former agent is Jeff Moorad, who currently runs the Diamondbacks, so there's a great likelihood he would also approve the deal. The other issues involve perks in Johnson's contract and how he would be reimbursed for the loss of them with a trade to the Yankees, such as his tickets to Phoenix Suns games, and physicals for the players involved. The Yankees are expected to give Johnson a contract extension once the deal goes through.

Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Still doesn't address their need for a better relief staff, nor does it help them in the long run as Randy's got like 3 years left. If that.

Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I don't think you can tell yet, since the Dodgers are getting two minor leaguers. We don't know how they'll pan out.

Steve Karsay returning, along with the newly aquired Felix Rodriguez should boost the pen. It's not that bad of a trade for all 3 teams.

HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 The Dodgers definitely got the best of this deal IMO. They managed to not only get an upgrade at SP in Vazquez over Penny but they also managed to get the #1(Duncan) and #5(Navarro) prospects in the Yankees farm system according to Baseball America. Navarro was also considered the top prospect in the organization last year too.

mike546 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 If you didn't look at the money issues, or the fact that any of the players were declining, if you told a Arizona fan they'd hve signed Consuel, Clayton, Sexon, Ortiz, and gotten Brazylton, Green and Penny in trades, they'd be pretty happy. But if you look at the big picture, they overpaid a pitcher on the decline, an injury prone 1st baseman, and gotten a VERY injury prone SP. I know you can't tell by September, but Navarro hit very nicely in the ABs he had. Duncan on the otherhand, I don't think was called up.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Well, atleast we still have Cano. There are some other reports that say that we gave up Halsey and Graham instead.
Bored 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Good to see the Yankees looking to the future... They'll be signing beer league softball players to fill out their minor league rosters soon. If you didn't look at the money issues, or the fact that any of the players were declining, if you told a Arizona fan they'd hve signed Consuel, Clayton, Sexon, Ortiz, and gotten Brazylton, Green and Penny in trades, they'd be pretty happy. But if you look at the big picture, they overpaid a pitcher on the decline, an injury prone 1st baseman, and gotten a VERY injury prone SP. I think that's idea though. Fool the average rube fan into thinking they have a team so they'll renew their season tickets.

mike546 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I hope we gave up Grahman. My god was he horrible. We give him a 9-0 in his first start, and he blows it.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 The Yanks still need Beltran. If they don't get him, this deal means squat. EDIT: Can we expect the Sawx to sign Clement now?
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I wouldn't go as far as saying it means squat, but Beltran is still needed. The Red Sox must sign Clement or trade for Burnett. I thought they would get Pedro or Pavano, and luckily for us, they didn't get neither.

Not like we need any more offense. The D is a key factor, but were not going to DIE with Bernie in CF. Honestly, Torre should put Bernie in rleft, and move Matsui to center. Cartman 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Relax guys. Latest News Dec. 16, 2004 - 10:04 pm et The Arizona Republic's Bob McManaman told ESPNews the proposed three-team Randy Johnson trade is hardly a done deal. He believes Johnson may now be leaning toward staying in Arizona. Wouldn't that be incredible? This could get interesting over the next day or two.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I wouldn't go as far as saying it means squat, but Beltran is still needed. Well, I was exaggerating, but the key is Beltran or Andruw Jones if they could find a way to get him. They need an elite glove in CF. Obviously this is a benefit to the Yankees. But they still need to get Beltran.

That was a close one. And on the Beltran issue, if we happen not to get him, which I doubt we won't, is Atlanta really serious on trading Andruw Jones for Kevin Brown (we pay part of Brown's salary obviously)? The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I think the Dodgers get the best of this deal, actually. Well, we'll find out soon enough when they slap Dioner Navarro in the starting lineup early next year. If he's ends up being as good of a "prospect" as Brandon Claussen, then the returns for the Dodgers take a little bit of hit in value. Plus, Brazoban was one of the key components of the bridge to Gagne, and a young and prospering component at that. However, bringing Javier Vazquez back to the National League - in a pitcher's park, no less - is a stellar move that should help Javy bounce back in a big way. And the real addition for the Dodgers is by subtraction: Shawn Green and his albatross of a contract goes to the Diamondbacks (what a fit), and the Dodgers actually find somebody to take Brad Penny, despite him having startling arm problems. Good move for Los Angeles. For the Yankees...well, Crumb's quote is pretty apt: I'm surprised that the Yankees still have minor leaguers to trade. Dioner Navarro was the most coveted prospect in the Yankee farm, mostly by default. Now, having dealt Navarro and Eric Duncan out of the minors, the cupboard is virtually bare. Duncan, of course, was going nowhere anyway, with A-Rod taking residence at the hot corner for the remainder of the decade. Navarro, on the other hand, was being groomed as the heir apparent to Posada, who's not going to be behind the plate for much longer. With Navarro's departure, the Yankees might actually consider snatching the waivers on A.J. Pierzynski to provide a younger set of legs in reserve than John "Gregg Fuckin' Zaun is Overrated" Flaherty. Outside of the prospects, the Yankees get exactly what they want - they get the Big Unit and they get rid of Home Run Javy. Consider the Yankees' chances for revenge substantially raised along with our fortunes, since we'll have a chance of seeing one of the greatest playoff matchups in the last twenty-five years when Johnson and Schilling square off in Game 1 of the ALCS. And then there's the Diamondbacks, who are going to wake up tomorrow and wonder what the license plate was on the truck that hit them. They replace Randy Johnson with Brad Penny, who had bizarre arm troubles (involving nerve damage, IIRC) and was, at best, a six inning pitcher before that. They get Brazoban, who would make a great final piece to a contending team, but now will mostly gain dust as the setup man for Jose Valverde. The singular glimpse of hope in their entire acquisition lies in a possible power renaissance for Shawn Green in homer-happy Arizona and even that isn't guaranteed, especially with Green coming into his Age-32 season. Arizona has just enough high-priced talent in Glaus, Ortiz, Counsell, Clayton, Green, and Penny to help Diamondback fans remember the veteran-stocked team that won the 2001 season. They also have enough fragility and overpriced mediocrity to almost ensure an organizational collapse in the next two years, especially if the financial issues (where exactly did they get all that free agent money again?) don't remain as quiet as they have been during all of these contract signings. I have a feeling that this is a recipe for disaster.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Honestly, I really don't think the Yankees CARE right now that their minor league system is decimated. They make enough money that they can keep a $150M+ payroll with little problem and get into the bidding for any FA they want. Whether that is wise long term (probably not) is up to debate, but they are the favorites in the AL right now. Not telling Pedro to kiss off a month ago really hurt the Sox, as now they have to deal with a depleted pool of FA starters.

Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Whether that is wise long term (probably not) is up to debate, but they are the favorites in the AL right now. For now. mike546 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I don't see how that is posssible, even with Clement. Schilling, Wells, Clement, Arroyo and Wake over RJ, Moose, Pavano, Wright and Brown? No way.
MikeJordan23 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I don't see how that is posssible, even with Clement. Schilling, Wells, Clement, Arroyo and Wake over RJ, Moose, Pavano, Wright and Brown? No way. Schilling is just as good as Johnson and much better in the post-season. Wells I'd take over Pavano for one season, easily. When healthy, he's great in a big game I'll give you Mussina over Clement But I'd rather have Arroyo then Jarett Wright, and the 5th starter is pretty irrelevant on big offensive teams. Just has to be decent and you're fine. If Pavano plays well, Yanks have a slight edge(Saying Boston gets Clement), but nothing unbeatable.
