NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 Oh no I understand the point of Social Security, I just don't see any guarentee that the money that I put into it will be used for my retirement. I'm not saying that it won't be there, or that it will, or whatever. I just like to have guarentees when it comes to my money. I would much rather put money into a 401k or something of that nature, something that I feel like I have some sort of control over, rather than trusting the government. You should feel that way: after all, it's YOUR money, YOU earned it. NoCalMike's crippled buddy isn't your burden. Actually NO, Social Security is not YOUR money. Just like paying car insurance doesn't make it your money. I mean you don't pay into car insurance and then when you stop driving or get rid of that car, call up and ask Geico for all the money you paid in. The money paid into Social Security is not YOURS, get it? You have ever option out there to take some of your paycheck and invest it in stocks, bonds, 401k etc....but that has nothing to do with Social Security tax. Anyone else see this and hear in their head, "It's your money, you paid for it!"? I have the sound clip of that one.
Stephen Joseph 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 My only real complaint about Social Security is that if it wasn't around, my salary would increase by my employer's matching contribution (as would everyone else's too, mostly) and that's what, another 7.5%? Hmm, that's about 3K net gain, and that would help this guy out.

Didn't I work to earn those wages that SS was taken out of?

Do you think Car insurance is too liberal as well Czech? The difference is that car insurance insures ME. Not Mike's crippled buddy. I wasn't even talking about "my crippled buddy" Re-read that post. I was talking about hypothetically YOUR CRIPPLED BUDDY. Social Security is a social safety net for people. Call it paying a debt to society if you want. Social Security is taken out from everyone's check to form a trust fund for society, and to privatize it and drain it in the process would be very irresponsible as a nation. Like I said, there is also no excuse for only up to 87k or so being taxed for SS.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 Yeah, and car insurance is private enterprise, not the government digging thorugh our wallets. So what, instead of paying car insurance every month, you can just put that money into a bank account titled "Money in case of a car wreck" It is the same thing. Actually it insures more then just you, as your money goes towards a overall general fund for everyone that belongs to that companies insurance. Also, these nice friendly private enterprises also can pull the rug out from underneath you and just decide not to cover your expenses, if they please. EricMM 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 You telling me you don't have liability insurance? That you aren't FORCED to have liability insurance? That if you never get in a wreck, you'll ever see that money? It's the same thing, you just pay a bill instead of getting it out of your paycheck.
