Name the most average band you've ever heard

Recommended Posts

I just don't like the Who and none of their songs sound good to me. Because I don't like them. So you won a bronze metal in the british invasion, big deal. I don't care for the Stones either, but Goat's Head Soup is the exception.

Paul McCartney's solo career is very "I can listen to this, but do I want to?"

A lot of Frank Black's solo stuff is pretty "alright" too.

Actually, come to think of it, pretty much... like, 75% of solo careers turn out being bland after an album or two, if that. Anyone from Lou Reed to Joe Strummer, really.

Anyway, outside of that...

I definitely agree in thinking that the Who are badass and everything, but I just never really want to listen to them outside of LaL. Same with AC/DC, Skynyrd, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and a few other classic rockers.

Also, a lot of new bands that are "good but only good because a lot of stuff these days is so bad" are pretty average when it comes down to it. The Strokes and whatnot. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whatever. Even Interpol is really sort of average when you put them next to other stuff. I mean, I like their first album a lot, but I STILL have not been motivated enough to go out and purchase their second.

And finally... well, I hate to say this... but Patti Smith[/i] is pretty average too. She's an awesome person, and Horses is probably in my top fifteen albums ever, but after that, Easter is good, and the one after that is pretty good too, but then we go into sort of a downhill thing which results in about five completely average albums in a row. Even Trampin', her first non-average album in forever, is pretty bland a lot of the time.

Oh, yeah, and Nirvana. And Weezer too. And a lot of Smashing Pumpkins stuff.

Alright, I'll stop.

All right. Point me to any song by The Who that's above average, because I have yet to hear one.

"Baba O' Riley"

"Pictures of Lily"

"The Substitue"

"The Real me"

"Overture"

There's four.

Actually, that's five, but nitpicking aside, I've heard Baba O'Riley and pretty much hate it. I'll give the other songs a listen, though.

Paul McCartney's solo career is very "I can listen to this, but do I want to?"

Wow. That does sum it up perfectly. I've heard like two songs by Paul McCartney post-Beatles that I've really liked, and then one that is "Meh, it isn't bad."

What do you consider "other stuff"? You're making a big mistake not picking up that new album, because it's probably even better than the first in the long run (and on sale everywhere this week!). The lyrics are infinitely improved, the songs are self-contained and great. Interpol's one of the newer bands who I'll argue are miles above average. They've got an incredibly sharp rhythm section, wonderfully odd imagistic lyrics, and a fantastic sense of atmosphere and the intangibles of songwriting.

Pretty much every band after the 1960's (and a whole lot of bands during the 60's) have been just sorta average. Every band has their detractors, and every band has their diehard fans. Except Candiria, because they're below suck.

Folks

please divert your eyes away from the ridiculous picture of "THE LAZ" to read his post. Recognize how fucking stupid it is, then laugh at his scowl.

So Far I disagree with

The Clash

Led Zepplin

KISS

The Who

and

AC/DC

But each to their own.

And I think Nirvana are average as well and so are Linkin Park.

Ha. Haha. Posting my ugly mug. Oh boy, Banky, you got me on that one. HI-OOOOOOOOOO!

You're not as ugly as you are intense. In fact your intesity is making you sweat in the face, which is flattering, as it is giving your face a remarkable glow.

The Who is the ultimate average band. Even their greatest hits album is underwhelming, which can't really be said of any other important rock band. I think their sustained popularity has a lot to do with them being sort of like punk rock to baby boomers, in that they were louder than any other band from their era.

One could say that the Rolling Stones are average.

Prince is pretty average. I mean you have songs like 1999, When Does Cry and Lets Go Crazy, which are fantastic songs, yet you have some songs like Darling Nikki, Adore and If I Was Your Girlfriend, that really...uninspiring.

This thread is going to get to point where EVERY working musician is called average.

"Average" ain't so bad, ya know? It's a few steps above mediocrity!

I'd say don't, you'll probably regret it. I know a lot of the music inteligencia thinks it's better than Turn on the Bright Lights, but I don't at all. Far as I can tell the only reason critics praise it is because they got away from their influences a bit, which IMO is a bad thing, and I don't think the vocals work as well with their "evolved" song structures. If anything this new record made them more average in my eyes.
