Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2004 They had Interpol's sound back when Interpol was still in short pants. Early U2 (think songs like "New Year's Day") was a knockoff of their sound. Start with Crocodiles or Heaven Up Here.
ArkhamGlobe 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2004 My christmas eve was somewhat underwhelming in that I barely got any sleep the night before, which resulted in me falling asleep around 9 PM while watching something on tv and waking up at 2 AM. Beyond that I had a pretty nice time though. Gifts recieved: Shirt and pants Miles Davis' Bitches Brew A 3-disc set with Django Reinhardt Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis Some free passes for a local movie theater A DVD set with Un Chien Andalou and L'Age d'Or (RAWK~!) Guest Fire and Knives Report post Posted December 25, 2004 Excellent. I'll see what they've got when I go up there tomorrow. Aside: 'short pants' is a pretty funny thing to say.

Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2004 Hey, Edwin, is A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man a prerequisite for Ulysses? Within the first 10 pages of the latter I've noticed Buck and Stephen touch on something that I assume happened in the former (the death of Stephen's mother). I mean, I'm not having any trouble at the moment (knock on wood), but is there anything that will greatly confuse me if I haven't read A Portrait? Not really. Stephen is peripheral to the book for the most part; after the third episode, it's more Leopold Bloom's story. If you can get through "Proteus," the infamous third chapter, you're in good shape. Stephen basics: mom died. Not so close relationship with his dad. Been in and out of religion, hookers, and philosophy. Conflicted about his Irish identity, since it's the English language that he loves. Decided to forge in his soul the uncreated conscience of his race, but has basically been living in a lighthouse since. He still hasn't become the great poet he dreams of being. That should do you. The relatives just got here. We have two lasagnas and two turkeys, one of which is fried. I'll be eating and then throwing up for the rest of the day. Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 25, 2004 As for the rest of this day, I was I gonna go see The Life Aquatic, but, since I only slept about five hours the night previous, I may just see it tomorrow. If you do see this tell me how it is. The local paper gave it a really shitty review but their reviewers seem to suck ass 80% of the time. I haven't seen it, but it'll fucking rule, as all Wes Andersom movies do. He's the guy that did The Royal Tenenbaums correct? Reason I say my local newspaper reviewers suck is because they said this movie was a bore and the plot was dead from the start...but then they went on to give rave reviews to Fat Albert. Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted December 25, 2004 I got the new Star Wars videogame. Knights of the Old Republic; The Sith Lords. Tell me how fantastic it surely is. Oh, and tell me if there's any jawlessness. I'm hoping that there's a villian just as adorable as Malak in this game. Well, uh, I got a Dell. It's much, much better than what I'm using, so I'm pleased. And horrified that so much money was spent on me. At the very least, the flatpanel monitor is nice. ...I also got a copy of EQ2, which I'm not all that crazy about, but I guess it's something to do. I look forward to the power going out as soon as I have the damn thing set up.

Oh, and tell me if there's any jawlessness. I'm hoping that there's a villian just as adorable as Malak in this game. So far its really good. I think I saw the main villian...whatever it was had the ghoulish skin and a bunch of battle scars. Hop on a plane and I'll let ya play it.
Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted December 25, 2004 Psh. Yeah, I've seen that guy. He's... interesting. I'll always miss that tall, skinny, bald, striped loser. His disembodied head should be floating around or something. And I'll get on my bike as soon as the tires get inflated. I hope you don't live very far uphill. Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2004 (edited) I got $300... That was it. No actual gifts. Is it ok for me to be absolutely pissed that no one even bothered getting me like an actual gift? Hell, apparently I'm supposed to spend $50 on a bus ticket since its gonna get cold (fuck that, my money). My parents, I understood because they didn't know where to pick up my manga I wanted and didn't want to make a mistake. But at least a little effort would've been nice. ...*sigh* maybe I'm just overreacting. Edited December 26, 2004 by Lightning Flik

Tawren 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2004 I see a lot of people getting gift cards (myself too, to the Canadian Tire - hooray). I just don't get why people give them. Okay, you're too lazy/stupid/don't know me well enough to get me a real gift, so you're basically just giving me money. Except you aren't. It limits what I can buy and where I can do it. Seriously, I can spend the money on gas, but what can I buy that I want (key word) at the Canadian Tire? Bah.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Report post Posted December 26, 2004 I agree; I mean unless you specify that you want a card to a certain place such as Best Buy...don't bother. Just hand them a envelope with cash in it. I got a 50 dollar card to Blockbuster. Here's the kicker...I don't go to blockbuster and unless they have another one of those super sales, It's a wasted card that'll never go to use. At least everyone else had the foresight to give me cold cash or ask if their was a place i like to shop and I told where i shop for dvd's and such. Remember when we were kids and we made lists for our parents and "santa" and mom&dad would distribute a copy to the family? how come when we turn 13...they stopped and everyone doesn't bother to think what you want and goes the card/cash route? Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2004 Money and gift cards are practical, but the are proof that the giver refused to put any real thought into the gift.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Report post Posted December 26, 2004 Money and gift cards are practical, but the are proof that the giver refused to put any real thought into the gift. Not always. For instance, my cousin knows my love for Quizno's subs and instead of giving me a gift card to Best Buy or cold cash like most did, she got me a $100 worth of Quizno's certificates. Things like that prove you can go the card/certificate route but still have thought.
the max 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2004 The members of my family that used to get me gift cards/certificates have now moved onto not getting me anything at all. My final haul: 24: Season 3 Red Sox Movie from 2003 (before the 2004 season...I think it's called "Still We Believe") NESN 2004 Red Sox season in review 2004 World Series dvd Return of the King: Extended Edition Red Sox hoodie Red Sox collared shirt new robe Beaker shirt Florida Panthers "Old-Time Hockey" hoodie Faithful (a book written by Stephen King and some other guy as a sort of diary about...who else: The Boston Red Sox) The Far Side desk planner/calendar A nice picture frame from my gal with her picture in it America: The Book And I think that's it. Quite a nice xmas for me.

Murmuring Beast 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2004 Digital Radio Bedside alarm clock Boxers Peter Kay DVD set Plectrums Guitar strap Leather shower bag £80 approximately Chocolate Capo More Plectrums Guitar sheet music (Chuck Berry on cover, oh yea) £25 vouchers Lynx Set Addidas spray set Socks The gathering was at one of my aunts' house, where there was about 18 of us. Mostly made up of people I know, with a few annual-meeting people. You need a heavy sense of irony to get by and most of the stuff is down right embarrasing taken out of context (ie. bingo, karaoke, bad quizzes). The highlight of the day was probably the busked guitar trio between myself, and two other cousins singing and playing along. The meal was good, and I didn't drink much, mainly due to my parents being there. Presents wise, it is becoming less imaginative every year, but that's mainly because I'm difficult to by for and I more or less refuse overly-extravagant and pricey gifts. Overall, a good day as usual and a bit of snow too.
Boner Kawanger 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2004 Money and gift cards are practical, but the are proof that the giver refused to put any real thought into the gift. I actually request money or gift cards from the family. I don't trust them when it comes to buying things. Too much room for error. I could end up with...gasp...a Fullscreen DVD! KingPK 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2004 Yes it is. My highlights include: - The World Series DVD (kind of glossed over the ALCS too much, but still pretty good. I'll get the NESN one as a compliment) - A huge book (size, not # of pages) of pictures and beautiful panoramas of nearly every baseball stadium ever built. - Red Sox WS T-shirt and hat. - Socks (I needed some)
