RIP Jerry Orbach

Recommended Posts

I really enjoyed Jerry's work in Law and Order. Lennie Briscoe was definitely my favorite, with his mixture of dry humor, and strong morale character. I don't know if anyone remembers, but he was in the season 2 episode, The Wages Of Love, playing a defence attorney. Going back to watch it, after he'd been in the later seasons as Briscoe, was really weird. I also remember him from the movie F/X: Murder By Illusion, and he was great in that too.

Man, L&O just isn't the same with Billy Batts as one of the detectives. RIP Jerry.

Guy's actually had a really distinguished career, I see.

Crap, crap and crap.  RIP Jerry

And call me selfish, but what does this mean for L&O: Trial By Jury?

Orbach was filming episodes inbetween treatments, so they'll probably have several episodes worth of material involving him to air before they have to decide how to handle Orbach's death. And they have a great deal of lead-time to figure out what to do next since NBC has moved the show's debut back do to his illness delaying shooting.

That being said, with the new show I would not be suprised if two things happen: Carry Lowell (who was set to do a multi-episode run on the new L&O show) ends up getting brought back full-time for the new show and/or two (and this is a real longshot) Dick Wolfe breaks down and basically brings Chris Noth back since the whole selling point for the new L&O series was Jerry Orbach and God knows Mike Logan is up there in terms of being one if not THE the show's top popular characters, behind Lenny and McCoy.

Of course the real question will be how they write Lenny out of the franchise; I would not be suprised if Wolfe decided to cold-bloodly exploit JO's death as a ratings stunt where his character is killed off and used to justify a massive four-show crossover event....

Shocking and sad news here. I loved Law & Order when Jerry Orbach was on the show. He just had such an awesome character. I liked the early years when you had Orbach, Chris Noth, Dann Florek, Michael Moriarty, Richard Brooks, and Steven Hill, because I think Briscoe played off Logan the best. I didn't know he was suffering this badly, and it's a shame to see him go at just 69. I'll miss his work.

Actually there were talks of having Noth take over for D'Onofrio on Criminal Intent if D'Onofrio didn't improve his behavior. So I doubt it'd be him taking over on the new show.

Man, this just depresses me.

L&O is one of my favorite shows of ALL TIME, and Orbach was a big reason why.

RIP Jerry.

NBC's 'Jury' Will Carry on Without Orbach

Thu Dec 30, 5:44 AM ET  Entertainment - Reuters

By Andrew Wallenstein

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - NBC will proceed with plans to introduce the new series "Law & Order: Trial by Jury" despite the death of one of its stars, Jerry Orbach.

The 69-year-old veteran of stage, TV and film died Tuesday at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he was being treated for prostate cancer.

A spokeswoman for the show confirmed that episodes already taped with Orbach will air in the upcoming midseason and issued a statement Wednesday.

"The producers are deeply saddened," the statement said. "While Jerry is irreplaceable, 'Law & Order: Trial by Jury' is an ensemble and will continue in production. A new member will join the company. Announcements will be forthcoming."

Six episodes of "Jury" have been taped, according to the spokeswoman, with Orbach having appeared in as many as half of them. His character, Detective Lennie Briscoe, will be replaced by a new character, but NBC declined comment on what actor might be tapped for the role or how he will be written off the show.

Orbach agreed earlier this year to transfer from the original "Law & Order," where he spent 12 seasons, to "Jury" in a reduced role in order to accommodate the actor. After more than a decade of carrying a heavy workload on "Order," "Jury" required only two days a week.

Briscoe's departure was explained on "Order" as a retirement from active duty on the police force; the character was written to join "Jury" as an investigator for the district attorney's office. Dennis Farina replaced Orbach on "Order" this season.

NBC has not announced a premiere date for "Jury," though a spokeswoman indicated the new series could debut as early as March.

Cast alongside Orbach in "Jury" are Bebe Neuwirth, Amy Carlson (news) and Kirk Acevedo. Joining Orbach in the switch from the original "Order" to the new character was Fred Thompson, who is reprising his role as Manhattan District Attorney Arthur Branch.

Guy's actually had a really distinguished career, I see.

You are thinking of Frank Vincent, who was on the Sopranos last season as Phil Leotardo

The guy who replaced JO is Dennis Farina
