Damaramu 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2004 Hey the old college hoops thread kind of dropped off and that one seemed to really be for the pre-season tourneys. Non-Conference play is winding down in the next month and conference time is starting. Things are about to get really fun. #21 Gonzaga beat #3 and undefeated Oklahoma State by the score of 78-75. The game wasn't as close as the score indicated as the Zags dominated most of the game and OSU made a late rally. So that's like the 3rd highly ranked team Gonzaga has beaten right? Why the hell aren't they ranked higher?

Because everyone is still fixated on the notion that Gonzaga is a Cinderella team, because they play in a low-major conference, even though they were top-5 in the country last year. It's one of the reasons why I'm glad the polls in college basketball are totally useless, unlike college football.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2004 They looked really impressive last night. I wasn't too worried about OSU losing though like my dad was. I think they'll still be a force come tournament time. As long as they lose to OU in the regular season......but that won't happen b/c we suck at basketball. I think that as long as they keep it up, the Zags could have a good chance at a high seed in March. I believe that the WCC is a top 10 conference in the RPI rankings right now too, so that should help their seeding.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2004 I wonder how many teams from each conference will go? We know the ACC will get like 6 or 7. I think the Big XII will get like 5 or 6. And beyond that I dunno.
Crimson Platypus 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2004 It's early yet but I'd guess 3 or 4 from the Big Ten, those being Illinois, Iowa, MSU, maybe UofM. Wisconsin seems to always be right there too, so maybe 5?
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2004 I think Ok State will make it back to the Final Four. Texas will choke in the Sweet Sixteen and Kansas will either make it to the title game or choke in the Elite 8, no in between for them.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2004 Kansas is going to loose in the 2nd round. It's possible. I'm telling you there is no middle ground with that team. They either crush their fans dreams early or late.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2004 Gonzaga goes down to Missouri! Oh my god! What an ending. I was watching it at halftime of the Holiday Bowl and it was an amazing finish. Gonzaga missed one shot to tie, got the rebound and missed a 3 pointer to win.
nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2004 Gonzaga will be tough come tournament time. I wouldnt want to play them if they get a low seed.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2004 Mizzou is fairly tough at home and Gonzaga had the obvious letdown after OK St. Besides, isn't Turiaf kinda hurt? Not a bad loss really, they'll cruise in the WCC from here, doubt they even lose another game. I gotta go with the line of reasoning that Kansas will lose 2nd round. They have NOT been impressive thus far, beating S. Carolina by 4 and Vermont by 7. With Simien hurt they'll probably get waxed by UK (although with UK we're dealing with another overrated team, but it's at Rupp so they should win). NC St. got punked by St. John's of all people, WTF?

yankovic fan 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2004 Whoo Southland conference! Who am I kidding? My alma mater lost it's head football coach AND basketball coach before each respective season started. Dang the luck. Not that we're ever that competitive anyway. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2005 On Cold Pizza yesterday Woody Paige said his title game would be a UNC/UK rematch. Huh? Has he seen something to UK that I haven't? All I see from UK come tourney time is a bunch of freshmen and the inevitable Patrick Sparks 2 for 14 shooting night. Yeah I know Sparks royally fucked U of L in the ass, but that was his career night. It's really just fool's gold, since at WKU Sparks shot them out of some critical games. Frankly I don't think either U of L or UK is worth a damn this year, neither will even get to the Sweet 16. Right now if I had to guess a FF it'd be Illinois, UNC, maybe someone like Pitt can finally break through, and perhaps Gonzaga if Turiaf is healthy.
iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2005 I still think Georgia Tech will be back in the Final Four when the tournament rolls around, but they've been driving me crazy lately. First, there was that Gonzaga game where I was sure they had it, and then they blow a 16 point lead to Kansas, and lose 70-68 in OT. Granted, they only did that is that BJ Elder went down, and Kansas was absolutely unconscious from beyond the arc, but it's still kind of eating at me a little bit. That inbounds play at the end was terrible, as they really needed to have Bynum as another option, so that they didn't have to force the throw to Jack. The Jackets are still playing really good basketball, but they're not quite at the level they were during the tournament last year.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2005 Well the reality is that Ga Tech wasn't really THAT great last year in the tourney. It's not like they were the 1996 UK team or something. These guys beat N. Iowa by 5, BC by like 3, Nevada by 5, Kansas in OT, and OK St. by 2. That's like the least impressive tourney run for ANYONE who has ever made the title game. I'm fairly sure they are a 1 year wonder and this year will likely get upset in an early round rather than go back to the FF. Incidentally, aren't Kansas some lucky bastards? They were basically garbage in that game yet the crowd seemingly willed them to that win today. I couldn't help watching that Kansas will get SOOOO exposed next week when they journey at long last outside their home court and play UK at Rupp. Now, anyone who has posted here knows I'm not real high on UK this year, but they'd have to be truly ass this year to lose to Kansas AT Rupp. I think UK is like 30-3 lifetime vs. Kansas. Alro 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2005 I think UK is like 30-3 lifetime vs. Kansas. They are 19-3 against Kansas, winning the last three meetings. Big night for top 10 upsets. Pitt and UConn got beat and West Virginia got the shit kicked out of them by Villanova. Kentucky also struggled in beating South Carolina. And Louisville is struggling against Houston right now. In SEC news, Florida's Matt Walsh is going ot be out at least a month with an ankle injury. Losing their leading scorer is going to hurt. Plus SEC fans won't have anybody to heckle when the Gators come to town.
Bored 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 Stanford upset Arizona 87-76 today. Maybe this can spark a turn around to an absolutely miserable season for the Cardinal to this point.
Mik 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 I attended the UNC-Maryland game today. Tarheels just looked incredible. The game wasn't as close as the score, and they still won by 30+. They were up 42 when the white boys came in and made turnovers on about 5 consecutive possessions. I am right behind the Carolina basket on Wednesday night for the UNC/Georgia Tech game, and I think GT is going to be the recipient of a simliar beatdown. UNC looks unstoppable lately.
iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2005 I'll even agree with that. There's no way that the Jackets can win at Chapel Hill without BJ Elder. UNC has been absolutely tremendous lately, and I'd say they have to be the favorite to win the ACC in the regular season. With that being said, I can still see them getting knocked off by Gonzaga or someone similiar in a 1 vs. 4 game. The Tar Heels have tons of talent, but I still think the Elite 8's about the limit for them.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2005 It's official: UK isn't any good this year. Seriously, when was the last time UK lost a heavily hyped game to a highly ranked opponent at Rupp? Last time I can think of is 1997 against SC. It's odd but I didn't think EITHER UK or Kansas was worth a shit, yet now everyone is going to scream out how great Kansas is this year and how awesome they would be with Simien. The reality is that UNC or Illinois would both beat them by 15-20. While my prediction for this game was off, man did I ever call it with Sparks. He sucked ass today. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2005 OSU had a great win on the road against Texas Tech. Tonight I'm going to the OU/UConn game in Norman. Whoo......it's not really that exciting to see UConn without Okafor though since I liked him so much. Too bad they couldn't have done the game in Norman last year and gone to UConn this year. *sigh*
iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2005 Yeah, UConn isn't shit this year. In fact, the Sooners are actually favored over them. They're coasting by on name recognition from last year, but this year, they probably won't even make it to the Sweet 16.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2005 Favored? OU's basketball team chokes against anybody that has name recognition. Witness the Duke game where they were in control and then just lost it by going away from their gameplan for some odd reason.
