The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 I've really been feeling Atom Heart Mother lately, even if the band hates it. The suite itself is great, and the other songs aren't bad either, except Roger's "If." It's another crappy list song. "Fat Old Sun" is nice and relaxing, and "Summer '68" could be covered by Ben Folds, I think, and it's another case for Richard Wright being the most underrated band member. "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" is non-essential.
Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 I've always been partial to Meddle, in particular Echoes and Fearless. Fearless, interestingly, is the first song the band wrote about Syd Barrett ("Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd...").

B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 Pink Floyd tracks for The Czech: "See Emily Play" "Interstellar Overdrive" "Mathilda Mother" "Lucifer Sam" "Astronomy Domine" "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" "Embryo"- gotta find the live version from their '71 BBC sesson "Echoes"- obviously "Free Four" "Cymbaline" "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" "The Gunner's Dream" "When the Tigers Broke Free" "Southampton Dock" "The Fletcher Memorial Home" "Marooned" "Sorrow" "High Hopes" "Fearless" "Jugband Blues" "Scream Thy Last Scream" "The Gold, It's in the..." "Sysyphus" I tried to stay away from Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, as everybody knows those albums. Anyway, I hope I've helped you out a bit, Czech. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 I don't need help. I was establishing a service for others. I mean, shit, I've got every album except More and Saucerful of Secrets. And the songs that are good, I have, like "Cymbaline" and "Green is the Colour." Maybe "Nile Song."
Guest theanswer1824 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun is an awesome song to listen to in the dark, with headphones. I never saw The Wall movie. Is it worth watching?

Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 The film version of The Wall is damn near unwatchable, unless you're a huge Pink Floyd fan.
Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2005 Want some good Pink Floyd: Try alot of their pre DSOTM material, including Meddle Obscured by Clouds Piper at the Gates of Sawn Relics (Simple for "Arnold Layne","See Emily Play", and some b-sides) A Saucerfull of Secrets Atom Heart Mother More Ummaguma
The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 I wouldn't call myself a huge Pink Floyd fan, but I like The Wall. It is pretty damned fucked though, and I can easily understand why some people hate it.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 The film version of The Wall is damn near unwatchable, unless you're a huge Pink Floyd fan. It's true. Except the marching hammers, and that one thing where a bloody cross turns into a Union Jack or something, it was shitty. I watched it in March of 2002. Fearless, interestingly, is the first song the band wrote about Syd Barrett ("Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd..."). I frickin' love "Fearless", it's such a mellonchally song, it just drifts along, like waves or the wind or something vaugely poetic.

Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 "Wish You Were Here" would be so much better if it didn't have that synth line.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 "Wish You Were Here" would be so much better if it didn't have that synth line. Absolutely. If that was on piano, it would be peerless. "All My Love" by Led Zeppelin could also benefit from no synth.
5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2005 I'm a huge Floyd fan, but man, is The Wall overrated or what. Doesn't even make the top five or six albums, in my opinion. Barrett's solo stuff isn't for everyone, but I adore it as well... but I Must admit, I haven't heard a single Waters solo song. So -- Brunzell seems like he might know this -- is any of Waters' solo stuff worth checking out? I'd assume that it'd be a "If you liked The Final Cut you'll like this" thing, but yeah, should I pick up an album, or what?
CheesalaIsGood 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2005 Funny, I like The Final Cut as its my favorite PF record, but I don't care for Waters solo work.

I quite like When The Tigers Broke Free and The Fletcher Memorial Home, the latter mostly for the solo.

Near the end there's a little bit of synth-brass that really doesn't sound right and would have been better served as high piano notes.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2005 So -- Brunzell seems like he might know this -- is any of Waters' solo stuff worth checking out? I'd assume that it'd be a "If you liked The Final Cut you'll like this" thing, but yeah, should I pick up an album, or what? I've never cared for Radio K.A.O.S., but I really like Amused to Death. And honestly, it's been so long since I've heard The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking that I can't remember if I like it or not. I really recommend Amused to Death though. Barret's solo stuff isn't for everyone, but I adore it as well... I love Syd's solo material. It's some of the weirdest music I've ever heard. There's no flow, no structure, no real feel to it at all, yet I too adore it. The music is such a reflection of the man at the time, and by Barrett was released, Syd was totally gone, both mentally and musically. It's a sad swan song. "Opel" is still his best solo song.
