RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2005 YOUR MMA Pic of the day IS! DROPKICK~! Ebenezer Fontes Braga vs. Daijiro MATSUI, PRIDE 15 (July 29, 2001)
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2005 Oh, The objective I have with this thread, besides posting pictures that I like but don't have a context to show them, is to get some discussion going on past events. So if you want to talk about the match in the photo, or the event the photo is in, or the fighters in general, go for it. Also, we can have a PICTURE BATTEL where you can challenge the pic with another one that is thematically similar (dropkicks, in this case).
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2005 Matsui's in a lot better shape lately. Never thought Id see the day (same goes for Shoji).
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2005 I dunno why, but I figured Matsui would have a better record than 6-12, and more matches. I gotta stop confusing him with Akira Shoji.

razazteca 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2005 Counter the armbar with the POWERBOMB! SAKURABA Kazushi vs Quinton Jackson -- Pride
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2005 Call that a powerbomb? THAT's a powerbomb. It doesn't show how high he lifted him up though, couldn't find a pic of that. It should be pointed out that all of these beautiful pictures are the result of Susumu's hard work. We're all ripping his site, everyone go to it and stuff. Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 Wes Sims' release pwerbomb on some kid at a small event was shown during his UFC 43 promo vid, but I haven't figured out who the victim was or where it took place. It was damn beautiful, though. On another note, those Rampage powerbomb pictures, though some of Rampage's most exciting moments, also point out a big flaw in his game: lack of submission avoidance. razazteca 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 I think the best slam or su-play would be the one Dan Severn did in one of the early UFC shows that knocked out his opponet.
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 Dan Severn landed two consecutive back suplexes on Anthony Macias at UFC 4 but, though they folded Macias in half and obviously didn't tickle, they didn't knock him out.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 Rampage doesn't even bother trying to get out of submissions, because he knows he's strong enough to power out of them. If Arona can't hold him down, who else in the LHW can? Of course, it's different when Saku chokes him out, but when he stays clear of positions where he can't really move. He sticks to slamming his way out of armbars and triangles. I've heard that Alistair should face Rogerio at the next PRIDE. Could be a doozie, or a...snoozie. Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 The problem is, you can't always slam out of moves. Tim Sylvia figured "If I could slam out of Ricco's, then I should... "*pop!* There's a number of cons with trying to slam your way out of a traingle, including the energy spent on the slam (added to the effects of the locked traingle) and the opponent taking adavantage of the basing out by either transitioning to a triangle armbar or hooking the opponent's leg and using it as leverage to gain top position. Also, Rampage has been caught in guillotines & kimura's as well, so it's not as though it's jsut armbar and/or triangle's that he doesn't avoid. In regards to Arona: though big & strong, he's never been all that great at applying & finishing submissions (in spite of his blackbelt).
Guest Deft Report post Posted January 21, 2005 I think Rogerio vs. Overreem will be a snooze fest but I'm hoping Nogueira wins.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 To be fair, the only sub that Rampage has tapped out to was against Sakuraba and that was more due to fatigue.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 It's true, I mean Rampage, though he doesn't have the "Credentials" for it, has great sub defense. In my opinion, he's definitely the most improved fighter, ever. Think of a guy like him as he started in the big time, or minor leagues, like KOTC, and now, and the difference is phenomenol. It's true though, slamming is actually detrimental to your chances, as shown by when Matt Hughes fought Dennis Hallman the second time. Rampage is just strong enough where he can lift them up and let them fall since they can't hold the armbar in mid-air. Or something like that, I don't really know. Another rumoured match is Cro Cop-Coleman, just a rumour but it would have lots of hype.
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 To me, sub defense constitutes not only being able to get out of subs, but being able to avoid them as well.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2005 Well yes, but Rampage's aggressiveness is what puts him in those situations. I'm not saying he has the best sub defense, but his ability to get out is impressive nonetheless. He doesn't care about avoiding them if it means he can hit them. Besides, it gives him an excuse to slam people, like so:See this
