Super Bowl XXXIX discussion thread

Recommended Posts

I am looking to avoid all the lead up to the Superbowl, as I have a big paranoid delusion that there is going to be WAAAY to much coverage given to the "WILL TO PLAY OR NOT" factor, which really, doesn't matter whatsoever anyway.

If he plays, he won't play any good, so it isn't an issue as far as I'm concerned. He'll be a decoy at best. Remember when Moss was injured earlier in the year and did jack shit when he played? Something like that.

The problem with the decoy that I'm having is that it'll only work for about a quarter or so and then he'll just be filling up a slot for a healthy reciever.

But who knows maybe they'll put up some points in that time. Freddie Mitchell has really stepped up to the plate and I trust him.

I want to see what effect it has on the point spread. Right now New England's favored by 7 points.

I see McNabb throwing at LEAST 2 picks against the Patriots and the Patriots scoring at leats 10 points from turnovers.

McNabb just doesn't throw picks anymore. It just doesn't happen, the man has finally learned how to be poised and confident (the game vs. the Steelers being the exception.)

Exactly. I don't think he'll crack in this game at all. He'll stay cool and calm and get the job done.

All this blowout talk makes me think even more that the Eagles are going to do the "shock the world" thing. As much as I hate the Eagles, I would hate to see Belichick pass Lombardi as the greatest playoff coach of all time.

I'm not saying he'll throw picks because he sucks, I'm saying he'll throw picks because the Pats play good defense. If anybody cracks, it will be the receivers.

Just think of it this way, if the Eagles win, Mike Holmgren is validated even more as another one of his famed 1992 asisstants will win a Super Bowl(Gruden being the first.)

Another thing about Reid is that in Philly, he's basically on the same level as Vermeil now in Philly. A Super Bowl win probably finally erases the Vermeil shadow that has likely hung over all Eagles coaches after him.

They're underdogs for a reason.

I think it was confirmed even before the playoffs began that the Pats would be making the rest of this Super Bowl run without him. Though I could be wrong.

Not as nuts as Philly, but the thought of the Patriots, the former laughingstock of the NFL becoming a bona-fide dynasty in the salary cap era is the main thing we're excited about.

We might be getting a tad bit spoiled here. Oh well, there's always the Celtics to send us back to Earth. And the Bru........oh yeah.

I'd like to compare the possible celebrations for both the cities. I imagine Boston will have a pretty decent celebration for the win if it happens, but I guess it won't come near the kind of parade they had for the Red Sox back in October.

And Philly.....well let's just say remember the 2002 Ohio State riots? God the city might get burned down. I imagine they could probably have 3 to 4 million people at the parade if they win.

Ty Law's on IR, so yes, he's done (possibly as a Patriot altogether, but that'll be decided in the offseason). The "Will Richard Seymour play or not?" hype should be in full swing though.

The last Pats celebration had about 1.5 million (with me one of them). No way they'll reach the Sox, but I'd say it would be about that big a crowd.

Philly? Recall the fucking 3rd Infantry from Iraq to handle that celebration.

By that theory, you could say Brady is going to throw quite a few picks because the Eagles have three Pro Bowlers (Dawkins, Sheppard, Lewis) starting in their secondary.

Not to mention haveing Trotter and Kearse as starters as well.

I think Owens being absent would kill Philly's offense. Westbrook's a good recieving back, but throwing the ball over the middle against those linebackers is suicide. I've been saying the entire playoffs that the only way to beat them is to spread the ball out for miles, and create openings inside. With a mobile threat like McNabb, it would give him the chance to make plays and steal the game.

Here's what's really going to happen though, New England will dictate the pace of the game, create a defensive score, and win by ten.

I can't believe that people - in this very thread - will downplay the loss of a TE that scored two touchdowns in the championship game. Yes, Philly still has a very good TE that will get a lot of looks and a bunch of catches, but he's not the one that McNabb looked to when in the end zone. Plus, it hurts Philly's ability to run the true 2 TE set that they've been running all year.

And Philadelphia is going to riot whether the Eagles win OR lose.

For the year Lewis had under 30 catches and 3 touchdowns. He had 3 catches and 2 touchdowns against the Falcons, a very good game, but please don't pretend that he was the key to the Eagles offense. Mike Bartrum had 1 less touchdown this year.

What amazes me is how many people in this thread are making statements out of their asses after apparently watching one or two Eagles games this whole year. This is a very good football team that is well coached and is not in the least bit afraid of the little Patriots that could.

you're calling a team that has won 2 of the last 3 Superbowls and is now in their 3rd of 4 after only losing a handful of games in the past two seasons the little team that could? believe me, I'm no Pats fan by any stretch, but that is just ludacris to call them that...

Eh, it's all in fun. They're a great team, but they're gonna lose. It's hard to think rationally when you sit in your cube at work all morning and stare at a fold out of Donovan holding the trophy up.

I think the problem is, after three previous failed attempts to reach the SB, Philly will be in a "happy just to be here" mode, whereas the Pats have the "been there, done that, but ready to do it again" attitude

That's one of the reasons why I think NE wins easy

Also, listening to sports radio for the last couple of days, I swear the NFL can't win for losing these last few years.

2-3 years ago: "Parity sucks! We want to see a dominant dynasty like SF or Dallas!"

Today: "The Pats dynasty sucks! We want to see new teams getting a shot every year!"

But how many TDs has Bartrum had recently? Lewis was in the right place at the right time, I fully admit, but can you really think that McNabb wouldn't have loved to keep that train a rollin' and thus kept looking for Lewis near the end zone in the Super Bowl?

And I don't know if my talking ass is one of the ones that you're referring to, but I've seen plenty of Eagles games. I go to the sports bar every Sunday to watch all of the games, and have a few good friends that are die-hard Eagles fans on top of that. Even when I don't want to watch the Eagles I tend to get bombarded by them.

"the little Patriots that could" would have worked 3 years ago when they beat the Rams ... calling this year's Patriots team that is a farce, and makes me question how many of their games you saw this year.

well nl, denial ain't just a river in egypt...errr something like that...
Lushus, if I still wasn't doing my NHL/signature boycott, that would be so sig-worthy for me

Well, sorry if the little Patriots comment touched nerves, but it was said in fun. I'm tired of hearing the Eagles undersold and reversed it. I was kidding, obviously the Patriots are a good team. I watched at least half of their regular season games and both playoff games, so I've seen enough to judge them on. And from what I've seen, I think that the Eagles will win.
