The OAO WWE Royal Rumble 2005 Thread

Recommended Posts

How long is it going to take any of you to realize that the only reason Batista is getting cheered so much is because he's against Triple H? It was said in an earlier post. Batista is so over now because the fans smell an Evolution breakup. After the breakup, hes going to lose his steam. Cena on the other hand has built up momentum since he came in the WWE. Watch Cena when he 1st came in to him now and you can clearly see he changed gimmicks, and changed movesets. He developed his character. Batista has done the same moveset since he was on Smackdown as Deacon Batista as hes doing now as Evolutions Monster on Raw. You people buy into the hype JR and the WWE puts on everything. Anyone who faces HHH will get a great crowd reaction because they're facing HHH.

you make a good poitn there. I tend to agree on that too which is why I have been wondering how well he will be received after the breakup. HOWEVER if he is booked strong against HHH and has a decent title reign where he destrosy everyone around him , he can be almost Goldbergish (who stayed over for a long time doing nothing but basically squashing everyone in short matches) but hell it beats Orton-HHH at mania so whatever

Cena is also crazy over at this point and it would be a mistake to not have him beat JBL at mania, because hell be the last viable contender left after show loses at NWO. if not SD will be hurt severly.

Last year WWE took a chance and had bothe Benoit and Eddy win the RAW and SD titles. only Benoit had something you can call a mostly successful title reign (though it was bascially put to a backburner from June-august)

I worry about this year

and you wonder why most of us hate two titles instead of the undisputed champ who can go on either show to frshen things up.

My gripe is they restarted the match when it was clearly obvious Batista landed first and THE REFS SAW THAT and they still had Batista win even though it should have been Cena.

Here's a thought - maybe Batista landing first was a blown spot. I would think that it's pretty hard to time it so that they land at the exact same time.

The "it should have been Cena" argument doesn't make sense to me. If Cena was supposed to win the Rumble, he would have.

It would be kinda impossible for both guys to land at the same time on purpose, only by accident. any double eliminations in battle royals like this always one guy clearly lands first.

and yea batista did hurt first, but its not reality that matters its WWES booking team. I guess we were supposed to infer that the refs were being loyal to their brands in declaring winners

and btw, WTF was Nick Patrick doing in the ring during the casket match? since when do we have an in ring ref during one of these (that and he appeared to be checking on heidenreich while taker was choking him, and heidi was trying to grab the ropes) and when did the triple threat match become no-dq they didnt announce it during the entarnces did they? (might have missed it?)

What's funnier? This, or Nash's quad tear?

Nashs quad tear, because at least Vince had a reason to get hurt, his leg hit the apron--Nash walked across the ring and fell down in pain- that and he scremed like a little girl LMAO

However I couldnt stop laughing last night I must admit-I hope they keep it on the dvd

Vince's kneejerker is better, in my opinion, since it was such a huge moment. Nash was just kind of there, in a ten man, or whatever the match was. Also, Vince's collapse was better than Nash's, once again, because the ring was so crowded. In this one, all the focus is on Vince, and he can't even stand up.

I've gotta say, I'm surprised, but it was a very good Rumble. Especially considering Patterson wasn't booking it, I kinda went in thinking it had the possibility of sucking. I don't know if it was a 'better' Rumble than last year, but it was a lot more fun. Which is something WWE's been missing recently. All the way through the match you kinda knew what would happen at points (everyone ganging up on Hassan, Raw/SD showdown, WGTT reunion, HBK/Angle, Batista/Flair, Cena/Batista), but it was still enjoyable because the WWE have had a tendancy of teasing things and not going through with them in recent months. The Rumble pretty much delivered. Especially on HBK/Angle. And I'm not Mr Workrate, but damn, I loved how they had all the smark favourites in early and at the same time. Plus they got considerable time. Made for some nice exchanges. London's elimination was unbelievably sick. The only thing that bothered me was that there were TOO MANY DAMN CHOPS! Benoit was especially guilty.

And then, they ALMOST blew it all with re-doing the tired, double winner angle. AGAIN. Hell, they only used it three months ago. Re-starting the match got pop of the night from me though and by re-starting the match instead of leaving it with two winners, they saved the entire show. Cena can still claim the title shot because of the controversy, no harm done, he doesn't come out looking bad from it.

I really liked the Raw/SD interaction in the segments, JBL's mocking of Long and that Eugene WM commercial was awesome. The undercard was a lot better than last year too. Although all the four matches seemed to go a little long, but I wouldn't say any of them were particularly bad, the way that last year's line-up was a total disappointment. First PPV I've not fell asleep during (damn time difference) in months. And, they did what was needed. Set up for Mania.

Thumbs up from me.

LOL at Batista's reaction to Vince. I can't tell whether he's concerned or trying not to crack up.

This is why the WWE Title should have gone before the WHC match.

After reading through some earlier pages in this thread, I do agree that JR should have verbally put over Benoit more, and it's not smarkdom saying that, it's the fact that he won last year by going the distance, they put the story in place this year with him lasting 50 minutes or whatever, but JR never drove it home.  Little things like that add a great deal to a match when it comes to standing the test of time.  We all knew Benoit wasn't going to win, and JR acted like he knew it too, which an announcer should never do.

Use it to build a little drama as the match progresses - "can Benoit become the 1st man to win back-to-back Rumbles?" They don't have to constantly mention Benoit's name, but have JR or Tazz throw that out there to remind people he's still there, and that he won it all last year. Then, when he gets eliminated, it's a bigger deal for the guy who tosses him (which shouldn't have been Flair).

Hogan won back-to-back Rumbles, HBK won back-to-back Rumbles, and Austin won back-to-back Rumbles.

Unless you meant back-to-back coast-to-coast Rumbles.

One positive that comes out of the brand split especially is to see the interactions between the two rosters. The more and more months and years go by, the newer the stars are, and the less previous interactions two wrestlers may have had in the past pre-split. I ordered last years' and it ruled, and even based on what I've read this year, it's fun to just see even the most meaningless encounters. For example, even though they're no huge stars, it's like surreal to see a Snitsky and Paul London interaction. Then again, Snitsky and London are probably the biggest midcard cult figures among smarks, so maybe it's an exception. Especially something as brutal as that which, despite looking cool that night, was not worth the huge risk that could have come out of it.

And I remember someone posted the awesome Snitsky/Heidenreich meeting at Survivor Series ("I like your poetry" "I like what you do to babies") and well, I just need to add numeros dos to my collection. Por favor.

I didnt know if this should go here or a new topic should be made, but wwe.com is reporting that Vince McMahon got surgery on his torn quad by the same guy who worked on HHH.

Batista wins the Royal Rumble

January 30, 2005

By Anthony Cali

FRESNO, CATheir game plan was simple. No matter what it took, Triple H, Ric Flair and Dave Batista wanted to make sure that the Royal Rumble was an all-Evolution night. For better or worse, their plan came true.

In the second-to-last match of the evening, Triple H retained his World Heavyweight Championship over Randy Orton. Then, approximately 60-minutes later, Batista won the 30-man Royal Rumble contest to receive a World Title opportunity at WrestleMania 21.

Naturally, some fans are already considering Batista’s victory as the demise for Evolution, but if you ask the 6-foot-5, 317-pounder, he’ll tell you the exact opposite.

“The way I look at it, it’s positive for Evolution,” Batista said from the locker room of the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. “I think it’s a good thing, but it all depends on how the other two members look at it. I think it’s positive to have the title in the hands of any Evolution member. And now we have that, no matter what. So that’s got to be good.”

Batista’s win didn’t come easy. After manhandling a slew of Superstars upon entering, the enforcer of Evolution had his hands full with SmackDown! Superstar John Cena. While trying to eliminate the United States Champion, both he and Cena went over the top-rope and hit the arena floor at the same time. While referees from SmackDown! and Raw disagreed over who the rightful winner really was, Mr. McMahon came down to ringside and ordered the match to begin again. Moments later, Batista hurled Cena over the top, and claimed the victory.

“It was unbelievable,” Batista said with a grin, “I would have rather have had a stronger victory, but Cena is a hell of a competitor. After I eliminated him for the second time, I didn’t know how to feel. I actually wasn’t expecting it at all, and I was a little shaken up by all of the controversy as to who landed first”

Despite the swarm of questions and controversy surrounding Batista’s upcoming title match, there’s no denying that Evolution’s animal picked up the biggest victory of his almost three-year WWE career.

“This is definitely the biggest win of my career,” Batista added. “I’m a little overwhelmed, and I don’t really know how to feel about it, especially knowing that I’m going to WrestleMania to get a match for the World Title. This is just surreal. I’m at a loss for words.”
