Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye

Heavy Metal and subgenre description

Recommended Posts

I've got five out of a potential top ten list set for this year, but I still have a list of about 10-15 CDs from this year that I still I need to check out, in addition to those yet to come.

Top of my list at this point is Pyramaze's Immortal... shame that Matt Barlow made that a one-shot with Pyramaze to go back and do more of the same with Iced Earth. While the new IE is definitely better than the previous one with Owens, Pyramaze could have made some more excellent albums with Matt on board.

For me, there haven't been a lot of albums that have impressed me this year. I've really been digging Protest the Hero's Fortress and the new Opeth, but that's really about it.

okay

First, a brief history lesson (which I include to direct you to other bands). GR was founded by Kai Hansen, who was one of the guitarists for Helloween on their three classic albums: Walls of Jericho and Keeper of the Seven Keys 1 and 2. After KOT7K2 he split off and founded his own band, GR, with vocalist Ralf Scheepers. They released three albums before Ralf split off to audition for the open Judas Priest vocalist spot that would eventually go to Tim Owens. After that fell through Ralf formed his own band, Primal Fear, and Kai took over the GR vocals and released six more albums to present day

My personal opinion is they're in the mid-tier of PM groups (albeit near the top), not the best of the best, but with plenty of good songs.

GR discography

From the three Ralf albums, check out Insanity and Genius, which includes my favorite GR song "Last Before the Storm"

From the Kai albums, check out Power Plant (their best album overall, IMO), then Land of the Free and Somewhere out in Space. After that, I'd say just go through the three more recent albums in chronological order until you get tired of them, as IMO those albums successively decrease in quality

The newest Origin is fuckin' sick.

This. That was one of the three albums that really hit me as far as Album of the Year goes, along with Meshuggah - obZen and Opeth - Watershed. I had high hopes for the new Scar Symmetry, but they really cranked the Bon Jovi to nauseating levels. The aforementioned Nachtmystium album is good, but it's not better than the aforementioned AoTYCs.

The new The Haunted album comes out in October, and it's going to kick ass. The one song I've heard sounds like they're blending stuff from rEVOLVEr and The Dead Eye, mostly the thrash of the former and the peculiar structures of the latter.

Fischer

Barnes doesn't even come fucking close

I dunno. I like them both but I think each guy suits the style of the band better for his respective era. I dunno how Corpsegrinder is doing now, but if you have the Live Cannabalism DVD, he used to really struggle when singing Barnes-era Corpse songs. He wasn't very good at the deep growls and grunts, but he blew Barnes away at the faster, speedier deliveries.

So really, I think each guy has their strength and weaknesses and they both were a good fit for their respective era in Cannibal Corpse.

I'm excited for that as well. I do think that The Dead Eye might be my favorite album from their catalog.

**smacks you**

Dead Eye sucked. Their best album is probably Made Me Do It, though I do have love for One Kill Wonder, specifically the last half or so of the album. rEVOLVEr falls off after "All Against All," for the most part, but the first 5 songs are tight, and the last half is just meh at best. Dead Eye is too far of a removal from what people expect from The Haunted, so I'm not too big a fan.

Somebody sell me on why Crowbar is so highly regarded. I don't mind their songs when covered by Kingdom of Sorrow, but I just can't stand the originals. Singer's voice is too doom-y for a lot of their heavier stuff, IMO. It's like Solitude Aeturnus, at least when it comes to Downfall: the singing is so different from the music that I just can't dig it.

I think Kirk's voice is perfect for their music. If they had an incredible singer (such as, to disagree with your other point, Rob Lowe from SA), it wouldn't fit as much as a gravel-throated fat guy wailing about his various sorrows. The vocal melodies themselves aren't all that metal, but the fact that he sounds so rough helps offset that. This is Lemmy's Law of Gravel. Crowbar's in the annoying position of being so influential that there's pressure to like them, much like Acid Bath, who I don't like. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go Agent-proof my house after that last statement.

No way. Dead Eye shows that there is much more to the band than being just another thrash outfit. Dolving's vocals are killer on it; he hasn't been that intense since some of the Mary Beats Jane records or the self-titled. I absolutely loved it from the first listen, as you could tell that they just didn't give a fuck and wanted to create something different. The whole album oozes of confidence in their musicianship.

I really enjoyed the self titled a lot, and Made Me Do It. I never really got into rEVOLVEr, and I was disappointed with One Kill Wonder, mostly since it ripped a bunch of riffs from the last two albums.

Based off of posts since my last one, I went and checked out some other CDs mentioned (via sampling of full songs posted on Youttube)

Origin - Hey, they're from my own state. Neat. Liked it, could have loved more were it not for my major complaint about the production, namely that the drums are way too loud over everything else. I get the drums play a major role in these types of bands, but I want to hear guitar licks and vocals first and foremost, not the 200 BPM BADADADADADADADADADADA DABADADADADADADADADADA.

Nachtmystium - didn't care for this one.

As for other subjects

Scar Symmetry - I actually enjoyed the 80's metal harmonies (*see below) on this one, very nicely done in conjunction with the death growls... I'm not sure what to make about their use of a vocoder though.

The Haunted - I can only listen to the two Marco Aro albums. I can't fucking stand any high pitched XTREME HARDCORE vocalist, which would include Peter Dolving's oeuvre. Also, Laz was right about Dead Eye. Not only was the music shite, but if you're taking song title writing tips from Shrimp Bizkit's swansong, it's time to pack up.

*Speaking of 80's metal in 2008, thanks to metalreviews.com I was able to find Marcello Vestry, featuring former Danger Danger guitarist Rob Marcello, which is chock full of 80's style guitar licks and vocal harmonies with songs that would not sound out of place on late afternoon MTV twenty years ago. If you enjoyed the 80's hard rock revival sound provided by Saints of the Underground's album earlier this year (as I did), then check out MV as well

I happen to think that Chuck Schuldiner blows Tipton/Downing out of the water. Not close.

Gotta stick with the original version on that one

I really wanted to like TSOP... the music is some of the best Death ever made, but I can't fucking stand Chuck's change in vocal style on that album, so for the most part I just end Death's discography with Symbolic

Symbolic is amazing. I had never heard of Death until I was at an Epica / Kamelot show in Virginia in 2006. Epica let Simone Simmons take a break in the middle of their set, and the guys in the group did a badass cover of "Crystal Mountain". Been hooked ever since.

The same. I love the porngore death and all, but really, nobody was better.

Hey, there's a sub thread. Top five metal bands.

No order.

Death

Isis

Neurosis

Electric Wizard

Slayer

That's top of my head, depending on if I want to consider Isis and Neurosis "metal bands." That's a broad brush.

Paradise Lost

My Dying Bride

Death

Testament

Kreator

One funny thing to me is that I could easily throw out a top five list, but I would spend way more time than necessary if I had to flesh it out to top ten list, mostly because I'd be worried about who I was excluding at that point

I'll also make note that, in spite of my username, Slayer is neither my favorite metal band nor even my favorite thrash band (though they would be third on a thrash list behind the above two)... looking at Agent's list above, it seems that applies to him as well

Gun to my head, Neurosis is my favorite out of all of those. I have trouble pigeonholing them as a metal band, but don't know what else to call them.

I love Slayer, even though I'd put them at the bottom of that five.

Gun to my head again, I'll put that five in order.

1. Neurosis

2. Isis

3. Death

4. Electric Wizard

5. Slayer

Slayer, Acid Bath, Skinless, Exodus, White Zombie.

No real order, just depends what I want. If I'm in the mood for simple anger and anti-Christian thoughts? Slayer. If I want to hear what it feels like to be dying or murdering somebody? Acid Bath. In the mood for a moshpit of brutal groove? Skinless. Wanna hear some sarcasm and steady thrash? Exodus. In the mood for horror with a little bit of everything else previously mentioned? White Zombie.

Could you recommend some Paradise Lost? Reason I ask is my only exposure to them is the opening band for Nightwish last November in Atlanta. They must have been having a bad night, or didn't properly set-up their sound system or tune their instruments, because it was one of the roughest 45 minutes of music I've sat through in some time. Couldn't understand the front man, and their sound in general sounded very muffled.

Testament is good stuff.

My top 5 metal groups starting with my favorite:

Kamelot

Nightwish

Edguy

Epica

Dark Moor

I'm probably going to get hit with some "HAW! NIGHTWISH ES T3H SUXX LOL2008!" comments, but we can't all share the same taste in music can we?
