CanadianChick 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 It was alright. I'm willing to give it a chance. The daughter is alot better than Meg, although Meg is suppose to be the straightwoman, so it's a moot point I suppose.
The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 It's an entirely different cast of characters No it's not. They're not the exact same, but they are similar in a number of ways, not the least of which is the fact that both families are constructed in such a similar way. I mean, really, they could have tried for some variety, but it doesn't seem like they did. It really seems to me that, as others have said, he wanted to make FG2, but then they brought back FG. I'd like for the show to become good, but I don't see it just yet.
Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 It was hit and miss. If anything, the premise is brillient, and there were some funny moments, but it's just missing...something.

cbacon 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Nah, they just have a similar family structure is all. I think we can all agree that the show was better then the abomination that was the post game Simpsons episode tonight.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I couldn't focus on the Simpson show because I couldn't figure out who Lebron James' in Simpsonized form truly looked like. I decided with a young Keenan Ivory Wayans when he still had hair. It wasn't Lebron in any case.
The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Agreed. I had NO FUCKING IDEA what was going on in that episode by the end.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I did find the Cain and Able film Flanders made pretty funny, but everything else was just kinda there. Really forced, which is a shame because I thought the few new episodes of the Simpsons before that one were actually hitting an alright groove.
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I was kind of watching it out of the corner of my eye. They really cram too much shit into episodes these days. I hate how the first 5 minutes never have anything to do with the episode.
WrestlingFan4Ever 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 The Super Mario bit was really funny.
The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I hate how the first 5 minutes never have anything to do with the episode. Man, they've almost ALWAYS done that. The only difference is, the stories used to make sense the whole time, and they went from point A to point B and stopped. Nowadays, they go from A to B to C to D to E to F and stop making sense somewhere around C.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 1) wasn't he working on this after FG was cancelled and before he found out that fox realized FG was ratings and refinanced new eps? 2) FG's pilot had a few laughs but a shows first season usually isn't it's best. That goes double for the pilot. Oh come on the Black Knight in Family Guy's Pilot was hilarious. "Hey Lois how's the moat?"

Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I liked it myself. The characters were funny (the fish saying he could see the wife's "schmutzplatzen" made me crack up for some reason. Plus, Seth made it fairly even with his political humor. Judging by his commentaries on the Family Guy DVDs Seth is a pretty liberal fellow, but he slammed both sides pretty equally. Like most others, the alien could use a different voice, but all in all I think it has some potential. They shouldn't put it right after Family Guy though. Family Guy is a finished product with established characters. American Dad is still a work in progress. It will look bad in comparison.
Guest Hass of Pain Report post Posted February 7, 2005 It didn't do a whole lot for me and a lot of it seemed really forced, but those were my thoughts after seeing Family Guy for the first time too and three years later I've seen every episode seventy times and it's one of my favorite shows ever. I'll have to give it a few episodes and see if I start to get it like you do with Family Guy. The show really could benefit from visually differentiating itself from Family Guy a little more though if it wants to avoid copycat status. It's not even just the animation style, but the first two things you see -the establishing shot of the house and the inside of the kitchen- look so remarkably similar to their Family Guy parts that they are almost interchangeable. I think I'll like the show eventually but it sucks to get a preview and then have to wait for five months for the debut. Seems a little pointless.
nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 American Dad was pretty funny at times. The son seems to basically be Neil from FG. The fish needs to die, and the Aliens voice was bad. I assume it will get better but nowhere near the laughs I got from the pilot of Family Guy. And that was the worst Simpsons EVER! They havent retained any of the humor and flavor that made the show great.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 This ep of Simpsons (Not that this thread is about it but whateva) suffered from the same flaw that is making me hate the simpsons of late (actually the past few years). every episode seems to degenerate into special guests only. What was the point of having Brady, Kwan, and the rest? I admit, LeBron James was funny. "That was a good day too." But totally unnecessary. Most people aren't good voice actors. The simpsons was far better when their guests didn't play themselves. Anyways about American Dad. I think people are getting too bogged down in the characters, this isn't like say Home Movies where the characters are actually important as characters. No one cares who Stewie, Peter, Quagmire, or the rest of the FG cast are, they just like the jokes. If the cast of AD is made of up good voice actors and they've got good writers, then the show will be good. One dimensional, like the Family Guy, but FG is extremely good at what it does. And riding the Buffalo was pretty funny.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Stan seems like a mix of Peter and Joe. The Son is like Chris and Neil (has mentioned earlier) The Fish might be comparable to Quagmire with better pickup lines. The Alien was a mix of Brian and Stewie. treble 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 The Alien spewing shit out got old pretty fast. As for the Simpsons discussion, what was with Tom Brady's voice? It's not that high pitched usually, is it?
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 It doesn't really have its own identity. For all intents and purposes it feels like it uses a rejected Family Guy script with a few tweaks. The alien and the fish? Overdoing it. One of them must die. The wife (she even have a name?) was utterly useless in this episode, so no comment on here. As Vern said, these characters seem so familiar it's hard to view them as being remotely new. My favorite part was the purse-snatching. Other than that I wasn't amused with very much of the show. The Alien spewing shit out got old pretty fast. Oh yeah, agreed. Even the ATHF writers knew not to overdo that. If it going to be in every episode, though--ugh. Downhome 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 The first quarter to first half of the show was pretty poor, but the second half really picked up, and once it got going it was fine. I think that once they work the kinks out of this show, it'll get over with the fans. It had more funny moments than most TV shows that are around these days, so I can't wait to see more of it. I agree though, the goldfish is pretty pointless. I hope they just scrap that idea for when the show really starts up.
SamoaRowe 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Wow, seems like I'm the only one who liked the goldfish (I thought he was more amusing than the alien). I also liked the backstory to the goldfish and the flashback to the skier with the real goldfish's brain.
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I was just shocked that a network owned by Rupert Murdoch aired a show like that. I felt it was a really overtly liberal program with the guerilla style of humor.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Family Guy's Wheelchair neighbor = American Dad's main character Horny neighbor = Nerd son Daughter = Daughter Black guy neighbor = Alien
The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I still say the alien reminds me more of Stewie then anyone else. He seems pretty smart, but seems like a jerk and sounds kinda gay.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Horny neighbor = Nerd son Sorry, but he's *totally* Neil.
Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I'll give it a few more chances. The funny moments for me were just jokes that could have been thrown into Family guy eps(as somebody said earlier). I'd like to see the Alien just become more bitter and shit though...use Alien technology without morals. Like he's watching TV and some kids are outside playing too loudly so he whips out some kind of ray gun and blasts them without guilt.
Eclipse 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 I watched American Dad expecting something very funny, but what we got was basically a near FG ripoff with VERY LITTLE funny moments. The whole thing bored me, with the exception of the Middle Eastern couple joke, which was HILARIOUS.
