NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2005 Has anyone seen the original dutch film, The Vanishing? I have seen the remake a few times(with Kiefer Sutherland) and it is pretty good, but I heard the original is THE definition of suspense, plus the ending from what I read is a lot better and much more realistic then the Hollywood ending slapped on the remake. Who's seen it?
Swift Terror 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2005 I saw it in the theater when it was released. It came to the Esquire theater in Cincinnati, which plays all the movies the national chain passes on. All I can say is, it is fantastic. And the buildup to the ending is stunning. I feel sorry for you if you already know the ending--better to go in blind.
Betty Houle 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2005 I like the original THE VANISHING a lot. The remake is an abomination. I may never see the American version of THE GRUDGE because I'm afraid of a similar outcome.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2005 I am just pissed because I have already seen the american version, and that alone will ruin ENOUGH of the plot for me, plus on AMC's Top 100 moments in scary movies or whatever it was called, they picked the conclusion to the original Vanishing. Needless to say, I still want to see it as I hear it is a great piece of suspense.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2005 Pretty good, yeah. The beginning and the end make the movie. The villain is kind of weird looking. I mean, you don't normally see people walking around who look like that.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2005 The Vanishing is a lot like The Usual Suspects or any M. Night Shyamalan movie: the main reason to see it is the plot & the ending. If you already know what's going to happen (or have seen the remake), I wouldn't go out of your way to see it. It's a good movie, but not THAT damn good. I did like the portrayal of the killer, tho, it's very different from any other villain I've seen.

I sensed where THE VANISHING was headed but it filled me with enoug dread that it worked. It was a well-made piece of work. Night's "surprise" movies (which rarely surprise) don't work too well either way; I liked UNBREAKABLE for the most part though. After Brad Pitt was on screen for 2 minutes, I knew what the reveal of FIGHT CLUB was going to be so I put the "surprise" out of my mind and just took in the movie. It was compelling on it's own for me to watch it from beginning to end although I don't think it adds up too much and I didn't care for the final scene. Just rambling...
