Only thing missing from the trailer was hearing Marvin speak, I hope it's at least somewhat like the original voice. I'm not too into the shape of what appears to be Marvin at the moment. But time will tell on how he comes off in the film. I'm excited about it as I always loved the books and the old BBC version of it.

Well, this doesn't seem like good news...

 

Basically, the bad reviews all seem to be saying that Adams' written wit doesn't translate well to the big screen. Well, those from critics who bothered to read the books, anyways.

It's bad when this quote is from one of the "fresh" reviews:

 

"The frantic action keeps us watching, although it's exhausting--like watching a feature-length trailer."

 

This film is like watching a feature-length trailer? That's one of the worst things that can be said about a film in my opinion.

I've never read the books, in spite of numerous friends of mine telling me I should with my sense of humor, but given the worlds of hype surrounding the book (and series), I don't think any film could live up to that.

 

Kind of like when they finally got around to making a D&D film, but put Marlon Wayans in it and made it a buddy flick...

So who saw the bloody movie yet....like me!

 

Overall it was a fun film, the romance was a little tacked on and I felt the editing was a bit choppy (especially in the middle), but the humor and attitude was there, everything with the Guide works great, Marvin and Zaphod are perfect (and the used an orchestral arrangement of "Journey of the Sorcerer" YES!!)

As I suspected he would, Alan Rickman STOLE the movie as Marvin. Mos Def was also really good. I enjoyed the movie much more than I thought I would.

Oh I thought it was wonderful. I might go see it again sometime next week. This is a film that definitely needs a sequel for Restaurant At The End of the Universe and maybe some things like HotBlack or the Hitchhiker's Headquarters.

While it is not great, I liked the film. It doesn't live up to the quality of the books, but a lot of what made the books great I don't think would have necessarily translated perfectly in to the film medium (especially when it is attempting to attract viewers who aren't familiar with the books). To me it warrants a sequel, and hopefully it does enough business to receive one.

 

 

A friend of mine (very big fan of the books and radio series ) absolutely loathed it though - he thought the "So Long and Thanks For All the Fish" song was "apalling", he hated the characterisation of the Guide, the plot deviated "woefully" too much from the books, he didn't like the casting (not sure if this includes Alan Rickman, but he wasn't a fan of the idea of Rickman voicing Marvin), too much focus on the Vogons, and didn't like the change in character basis and bias. I have a feeling that this may be representative of many who are fans of the books and radio series. (though extreme in some aspects).

I thought it was fine, personally. I just re-read the book only a few days ago, and while it does deviate MAJORLY at points, I'm okay with it for a few reasons:

 

1) The great majority of this WAS written by Adams. Bitch and moan as much as you want about the changes, yes, they were made, but many of the changes were made by Adams himself. This script is not new, it's fairly old.

 

2)Of course some things had to be abridged because they might not fit properly in a movie, but overall it captures exactly the feel it should have. It was fairly witty, fun, and it kept my interest. I only have two problems. The Sperm Whale scene and the Factory Floor are just incredibly well done parts.

 

My only problems:

 

1) The love story. It just seemed to obviously shoe-horned in. It could have been done a bit better I think. Or at least differently, a bit more subtle and less forced. :\

 

2) Earth, Mk 2, stays and they 'restart'. I know that Earth makes a later appearance, but it's not Mk 2, it's one created by the Dolphins in the "Save the Earth" campaign (At least, that's what I thought). It just seemed way too... climactic for a story that shouldn't really have a climax. It's against the feel of the book. But... oh well. Should be interesting to see if there's a sequel.

 

Overall, a good ride, I'd definitely recommend it. It's different from the book, but don't panic: The characters are still there and the pulse is still there. Just now even veterans don't quite know what to expect.

That's the thing that worried me. How do you translate written "aside" jokes like "humans state the obvious" to film? You just can't.

OK, having watched the movie, and I'm pretty much in agreement with Justice on everything. Things may seem a bit off, but you're still going to laugh when Deep Thought gets to the Answer.

 

Performance-wise, Alan Rickman (and Warwick Davis) steal the show as Marvin. Stehpen Fry as the book was inspired as well - I think he did the books-on-cassette reading as well.

 

On the other hand, the fiancee (who's British and has never read the book. They exist, apparently) HATED the movie. Oh, she appreciated the very British stuff (like the tea) but apparently her absurity tolerance ends at about Monty Python. Oh, well.

 

btw, the Chicken Little H2G2 teaser parody was pretty funny.
