Matches you did a 180 on

For me, I LOVED Jerry Lynn vs. Rob Van Dam from Hardcore Heaven 1999 when I saw it live on PPV, the first ECW PPV I ever saw...but watching it again now, I don't like it at all.

 

What are matches you've done total 180's on and why?

every time I watch Royal Rumble 92 it becomes less and less special. I think it has to do with the nature of the Rumble, where the drama builds with each entrant and after repeated viewings, it loses that effect.

 

Shawn Michaels v Diesel from Good Friends, Better Enemies. Each time it seems more and more like an extended squash.

Taker/Foley KOTR 98

 

When I watched it: I thought it was the greatest match of all time.

 

Looking back: It was pretty shitty besides the Foley bumps.

I think just about everything ECW did didn't age well as a lot of stuff that set my world on fire, particularly matches involving Sabu and The Sandman, is just slow and sloppy to watch these days.

Kurt angle vs chris benoit matches because when i first got into wrestling in 2000 wrestling was about hardcore matches and hardy boys type wrestlers. Therefore when these matches were on i would skip them and now i love them.

Triple H/The Rock Ironman Match. I used to love the match, but recently, I noticed it's basically the same spots repeated several times, and some weak (although smart) falls. Plus a shit finish.

 

I don't think I've ever gone from a "hated it" to "loved it".

Most Taz natches. I used to love the guy's work, now looking back on it his matches were nothing special, same with RVD, watch his DVD and tell me that there were any matche even approaching 4 stars. It just goes to show haw good Heymen was at getting people to drink his Koolaid, as JR would say.

I used to hate the Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels iron man match from Wrestlemania XII but after watching it again a couple of times I've really enjoyed it.

 

However, I did like the Steve Austin/Triple H match from No Way Out 2001 but I couldn't even sit through it a second time. It bored the shit out of me. I also loved the Hogan/Warrior match from Wrestlemania VI but it gets worse with every watch.

I like that HHH/Rock Iron Man match the same as before (which is to say I loved it), but I actually get pissed more than disliking it becuase there was such a good one-on-one contest going on that had the crowd and home viewers totally freaking out and then it showed that the WWF had a doctorate from Overbooking U.

Yeah, I'll have to agree with the Bret/HBK Ironman Match. Watching WM12 live, I thought it was a helluva match. Watching it again a few weeks ago on ths From the Vault: Shawn Michaels DVD, I was bored for a good portion of it. It just doesn't hold up with time, I personally think that the Rock/HHH and the Lesnar/Angle Ironman matches were much better.

 

From hating it to loving it? I just can't think of anything. Usually, if I hate a match, it's for good reason, and I don't change my mind even after multiple viewings (or uses of the FF button). I "may" be able to say Brock/UT from Unforgiven '02 - didn't like it when I watched it live, but after re-watching the PPV a while back, it was a lot better match than I gave it credit for.

Hogan vs Andre from WM3 was one I grew up hating. THis was mainly due to the really long bearhug that seemed to go forever. However, after getting older, and learning how important the match was to the industry at the time, it grew on me, and I find it rather enjoyable.

 

I used to not be able to get enough of Sabu, but the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD, and the Rob Van Dam DVD opened my eyes to the guy. His matches were always in this order:

 

Throw guy over guard rail

Set up chair in ring

Run - jump off the chair - to the top rope - then jump onto the guy on the floor

If this fails, try, and try again over and over until you get it right

 

I can respect the guy for what he put his body through for the sake of entertainment, but his matches have NOT aged well.

The WMXX Triple Threat seems slower and slower each time I watch it, though the last few minutes never fail to get my heart pounding.

I agree on Mania 20 match. It was a very good match with an amazing ending, but it wasn't a 5 star classic.

Jerry Lynn vs. RVD, Hardcore Heaven '99. I first saw it on the very first edition of ECW on TNN, which featured an alternate commentary from the original match by Joey Styles. The match was chopped, but to be honest, there is really no difference from the full match, which I saw in its entirety on ECW: Extreme Evolution. I thought this match was the SHIT when I first saw it. Now, after repeat viewings, I can't sit through it for more than ten minutes. It's a spotfest chock full of telegraphed maneuvers and, in some cases, silliness.
