What do you think about the WWE doing a "Clash of the Champions" type special?

I was watching some old "Clash" matches I downloaded, and thought it would be nice to see a PPV-worthy card on a special night on a primetime network. There is an abundance of PPV's now, and it might not be feasible, but I think they should try it to see if they could bring in some new fans. If it were on NBC, Fox, etc., it could be huge.

It would be hard to cram in between all the weekly TV shows, and the two or so PPVs every month...

Also, I'm not sure any of the networks other than UPN would really want to touch WWE right now...it's not exactly a hot property at the moment.

They've run out of matches to book between their 2 weekly 2 hour shows and nearly 2 3 hour PPVs a month. They don't need more. And I don't think it's exactly WWE turning down a network spot...

In theory it's a nice idea, but seriously, they can't even book enough matches for their PPVs, let alone for some sort of special. Unfortunately, this sort of "supercard for free!" concept became outdated as soon as the bigger promotions (WWF / WCW) started having monthly PPVs.

However, I would say that this could be great counterprogramming to run up against other networks.....in certain situations. For example, running a show up against the Superbowl (although it would probably get slaughtered in the ratings) or some other major sporting event.

No,

they can't even make PPVs worth watching. How are they going to make a Clash type program more than just a glorified house show?

If they put RAW and Smackdown matches on the same card.

Absolutely not.

Every TV show now has what would have been a PPV-worthy card back in the heyday of Clash of the Champions. Basically, RAW and SmackDown! are Clash of the Champions.

Not until they start doing pay per view quality pay per views.

It just wouldn't be a feasible concept anymore. As someone said, Raw and Smackdown basically are what Clash of the Champions was at the time, only they run 104 of them a year with much slicker production.

The Clash, and Saturday Night's Main Event for that matter, were special because at a time when a company only ran four pay-per-views a year and television consisted of jobber matches with the highest profile matches being along the lines of Boris Zhukoff vs. Hillbilly Jim, it was a chance to see flashy, fresh pay-per-view quality matches and major advancements of storylines in a time when that kind of talent interaction and electric atmosphere was rare. People forget that Hulk Hogan almost never appeared on WWE television during his title run, and when he did it was in an interview. Ric Flair very rarely wrestled on television either.

Prime Time specials worked because they gave fans what they typically never got outside of pay-per-views. Nowadays, the champion wrestles every week and a title defense is no longer special. A big event atmosphere is no longer special, nor are matches between nonjobber talent.

Basically, wrestling evolved past the climate where a Clash would mean something.

I wouldn't mind them doing this instead of the monthly PPVs. Damn I'm sick of monthly PPVs...it's like running at top speed when you're the only one in the race.

I'd love to see it, but logically you'd have to put this way down on the "To Do List." Damn shame though.
