Console Sales Numbers..

Recommended Posts

I know Sony's Playstation 2 has surpassed 80 million units at this point in time.

Sony have announced they have now shipped over 80 Million Playstation 2 units! This figure has come four months faster than the PSOne, showing that Sony are still the one to beat in the console wars. They expect to ship almost 86 Million PS2's by the end of March this year.

At this point in time, I think the X-Box does. PS2 has a huge installed user base, but they're not really growing that much. Probably a lot of the buys are people replacing PS2s. I'll be adding another notch to that list soon. ;)

In December, I'm fairly positive that Microsoft moved more X-Boxes than Sony moved PS2s (in America, anyway). Halo 2 is the obvious reason.

Without question PS2 has the largest installed user base, with X-Box a distant second, and GC dead last.

Wooo go Sony!

Yay! A company I likely don't have any stock in has a dangerously large marketshare of the the video gaming console industry! WHOOO-HOOOO!!!

;)

Yeah, I'd say that X-Box is outselling PS2 right now, as far as first-time buyers go. PS2 might be selling more games than Microsoft though, sports games and the like. Both consoles have a hot original title out there (PS2 with San Andreas and now GT4 while X-Box is probably still selling Halo 2's out the yin-yang), but PS2 still has the stronger installed base, and still has the bigger library.

Gamecube is just staying above the water right now. RE 4 is selling, but you really don't hear of any other 3rd party companies really ramped up at making games for it.

And you never hear about a shortage of Gamecubes, either. Didn't Nintendo officially halt production of them because retailers still have tons of them they haven't sold?

Poor Nintendo Dreamcube--er, Gamecast.

PS2 is back to outselling both.

Console sales in Jan:

PS2: 488,000

Xbox: 241,000

Gamecube: 114,000

GC production was stopped a long time ago.

Probably worldwide. PS2 has more global recognition and a library that appeals more to international gamers than stateside. No way could the PS2 still be selling TWICE as much.

This makes me wonder why in the hell PS2's are still selling at such ridiculous rates, so many years after it was launched.

Are you not paying attention? It's because they break down at a high rate, causing people to buy more to replace them.

Yet people still remain faithful to the system instead of switching over to a superior one?

I guess an enormous game library to choose from is more important than any other aspect to the public in that instance.

Yeah, I bought like 3 PS2s, and when the third broke, that was when my patience with Sony and Playstation ran out. Got a Xbox and never looked back.

Um, ouch. Can't say I blame you for switching then.

When did you buy the PS2 that is breaking down on you now, Andrew?

I got it used, 4 years ago. I expect the replacement that I get to last significantly longer since I won't be using it as a DVD player nor am I modding it.

Exactly. Sony sucks but the selection of games that companies make for their ****ty hardware is unmatched. Everybody knows that MS would have been royally screwed if not for Halo 1/2. "Superior hardware" doesn't mean a damn thing.

Sony sells the most because they break down so often that people have to go out to buy more. This in no way puts Sony in a good light.

You of course can link to some proof to this?

I think the fear of Microsoft taking over the video game industry is greater than any kind of console they put out. I mean, that thing comes more loaded than the Dell laptop I have for work...

I've had mine for almost a year and I've had no problems so far. When can I start expecting it to break down?

Oh yeah, if it breaks down because you moded it, well you took that risk.

Those numbers are US only. Yes, the PS2 is that dominant.

The worldwide numbers are even worse for the others. Xbox in Japan is a joke.

Doesn't X-Box in Japan consistently get its ass kicked in sales by "dead" systems like the Wonderswan Color and Dreamcast? I know it did early in the launch.

I've asked before and you ignored--where do you get access to these numbers, Anya? It seems anytime a question about sales comes up, you're able to whip 'em out with ease. ;)

GC sales are even worse than Japan? Ouch.

Isn't the GBA the only system that actually comes close to the PS2 in sales? I remember for a period they were selling more than the XB and GCs, but weren't really *that* far behind the PS2.

The data comes from NPD. The same group that provides data for magazines and others in the press.

And yes to all your questions.

Soon. It'll happen.

Now now don't scare the poor guy. I had my PS2 for 5 years and the only thing that ever happened was the cooling fan broke because of a stupid mistake I made. It got repaired and sent back with no problem. Other than a few annoying "Disc read error"s I had no problems with it until I traded it in to get the new slimline one. Maybe I was just lucky I guess.

I think so. GameBoy is still the best-selling video game system ever, I think.

You know, not to scare you but......the new slim version doesn't have a cooling fan. You also gotta remember everyone takes care of their PS2 differently than others do. You'd be surprised how many people sit there and tell me "I took real good care of it and I just don't get why it doesn't work." Then I take a look at it and its got dust up and down the back where the fan is, there's scartches to the machine itself but then again, it normally just takes a few small things to screw up a PS2. Just save time and buy yourself a nice Xbox.

That "PS2 sales are higher only because PS2s break more" argument is such a joke. PS2's worldwide sales have been roughly four times as high as X-Box or Gamecube sales for most of its life. You really think that people have bought an average of *four* PS2s? That means for every person like me that has had one PS2 that never broke, there's someone out there that's bought seven of them? Seems pretty unlikely. And of course, all the people that make that argument have never presented any actual evidence, except just whining about how often their PS2s have broken.

Gameboy is the best selling videogame system ever only if you add up the sales of all the different kinds of Gameboys. If you don't, PS1 is. Adding them up never made any sense to me, since the hardware is so different. But yeah, GBA has been doing really well. It often beats PS2 in monthly sales, especially in Japan.

Gaming Age forums often have links to NPD numbers.
