Scarecrow looks fine. You need to keep in mind that this is early in his life as a villian. He's not going to be worried about a costume.

 

Besides, his gas is what makes people fear him.

So what is Scarecrow's deal anyway? Why is he the way he is? I'm good with just about all of Batman's enemies except him, I have no clue about his backstory.

 

Is it the usual 'X happend and now I'm a raging psychopath'?

They're not following the comic version of his story. In the movie, he works at Arkham Asylum and he experiments on his patients there with fear gas. The only reason he made the mask is to enhance the hallucinations that his patients have when they are under the fear gas. That's why it looks thrown together or home made and that's also why he's still wearing a suit.

Bat's mask looks weird. Different from the Burton/Schumacher films I guess. I was kinda hoping they wouldn't go with the rubber bat suit right out of the gate, but it looks good. I don't get why they leave off the yellow bat symbol, only to keep the the Utility belt the same color.

That's not his costume if you're referring to him being on the horse and it would be a spoiler to explain that picture. For most of the movie he'll be wearing the suit that his Dr. Crane character wears. And there aren't going to be any "costumes" in this movie besides Batman's. I already explained that Crane only uses that mask to scare people under the influence of fear gas at Arkham Asylum. He also uses it to hide his identity since he's a criminal involved with smuggling certain items into Gotham. It's not like he was bitten by cats and then had some sudden urge to create a costume for himself.

What is it in the comics. All the bios I've read are pretty close to the movie, with the movie's biggest difference being he works in Arkham instead of Gotham U.

Jonathan Crane often found himself the target of bullies who dubbed him "Scarecrow" with his gangling legs and gawkish features, Washington Irving's fictional Ichabod Crane made real. Fear of his oppressors defined the young Crane, who vowed to conquer his weaknesses by knowing the nature of all phobias, and in doing so, avenge himself upon all who taunted him.

 

Later, Crane studied psychology and biochemistry, parlaying his advanced knowledge of fear and the human mind into a Gotham University professorship. Crane's unorthodox and unsafe teaching methods would ultimately be his undoing, forcing his dismissal. As revenge, Crane adopted the rags and tatters of the Scarecrow, literally frightening several of the University's regents to death with a specialized fear gas which made each man's personal demons all too real.

 

The Batman ended Crane's reign of terror, and subsequent criminal endeavors, but gained a bizarre new addition to his rogue's gallery in Arkham Asylum--a psychopath whose only fear is of the Dark Knight himself.

 

The script for Batman Begins didn't go into his motivations but they might add that in with the other rewrites. In the movie, he's not going to "become" the Scarecrow like other villains are made in other comic book movies. There's not going to be some transformation scene or anything. Nolan is trying to make the villains appear more realistic. He is simply dragged into the conflict because of who he's working with in the smuggling.

I like how the Scarecrow's movie debut is going to follow how his BTAS debut episode went. Of course, his origin was explained in the middle of the episode. But I like the pacing.
