Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted March 7, 2005 Lincoln Financial Field doesn't sound too bad when Philadelphians started nicknaming it The Linc like they did to The Vet. Staples, Arco, and the RCA Dome are good corporate stadium names. Obviously I'm biased, but Lambeau Field and Soldier Field are the best names in football for obvious reasons. Aloha Stadium doesn't sound too bad either, but it sadly does not evoke memories of any good games whatsoever..
Vasarian_Brandy 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2005 The Gund Arena. truly awesome name. I'm from Cleveland, and I couldn't disagree more... Like another poster said... Well... The nickname a lot of folks have for the place -is- a VD... But that was back when the Cavs sucked. Anyway... For worst names... Whatever they renamed Candlestick / 3Com... What the Hell is it now: Monster Park??? That's fucking lame. Just name it Loser Field. Tropicana Field is bad. SBC Park is kinda blah. The Cleveland Cavs' old home, the Richfield Coliseum, was cool. Very simple and effective... And the place was just awesome. And if you "old-time" Clevelanders are out there, you'll remember this one: Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. My 1/50th of a dollar. MARTYEWR 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2005 As for bad names: not an arena name, but the Phoenix Coyotes' practice facility was once named "The Cellular One Ice Den".
Guest LooneyTune Report post Posted March 7, 2005 Darthiki made it sound like "Yankee Stadium" being historic was a bad thing with the "sadly", so I just pointed out something... then rambled about the Devil Rays horrible stadium again. no i just hate the yankees That cleared up the explanation easily... Anyone know if Red Robster has an arena they named after themselves? Or maybe Long Johns Silver... "Coming to you tonight from the Long John Silver Park, it's the (Blank) vs. (Blank II)!" Kaertos 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2005 The only reason I don't despise the corporate names outright is that they occasionally give rise to some good nicknames. For example: Bank One Ballpark = The Bob Minute Maid Park = The Juicebox We've been very lucky in Cincinnati. Great American ballpark could almost be non-corporate unless you know about Great American Insurance. At least it still makes sense without the company being involved. And on the football side, we have Paul Brown Stadium. Nice. And, it is in the agreement that the city and county signed that if the naming rights are sold, it won't be (for example) Pepsi Stadium, but rather Pepsi presents Paul Brown Stadium. Here in Dayton, we have 5th / 3rd Field (which is frankly stupid), The University of Dayton Arena (classic), the Ervin J. Nutter Center (nice, Nutter was a good guy by all accounts, and it lends to a classic nickname, the Nutt House) and Hara Arena.

Alro 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2005 The local minor leage baseball team plays at Louisville Slugger Field, which I don't mind at all. Papa John's seemed to have enough sense to call the new Louisville football stadium Papa John's Cardinal Stadium instead of just Papa John's Stadium. And I'm obviously biased, but Rupp Arena is one of the best arena names I've ever heard. My college's football field has one of the worst names I've ever heard: Applebee's Field at Rawling's Stadium. Georgetown didn't even have an Applebee's until late 2001/early 2002.

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2005 I can't believe no one has mentioned the Cow Palace. I can't decide if it's really bad or really good. The Rosemont Horizon was another good name.

Vasarian_Brandy 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2005 ...And I'm obviously biased, but Rupp Arena is one of the best arena names I've ever heard. While I know there's buku amounts of history and 'mystique' around this place... It sounds to me like the place was named when someone was (ahem) "recovering" from a night of partying on campus. "So... What do you think we should call this arena we've built?" (guy hovering over a toilet) "I think... I think we should call it... Uh... RRRRRUUUUUPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!" "Hmm... Rupp Arena...
