They did cut like 2 hours out of that, initially. That would make any movie hard to understand.

I'm talking about the entire unedited version, which runs about 3 hours and 45 minutes. The American version is considerably less and sequences chronologically, I'd avoid it entirely.

I'd like to think all of the 1968 sequences weren't part of the "Opium Dream", as many theories point to, but they probably were.

 

Everything seems too idealistic when Noodles returns. Deborah essentially forgives him (or, at least talks to him) despite his (brutal) raping of her, Noodles has all of the money he wants, and his 30-year guilt over having Max "killed" is vanquished, since it turns out Max actually betrayed him. The fact that it's a dream also helps in the ambiguity of whether or not Max really did jump into the garbage truck or not.

 

That's a quality movie, right there.
