Downhome 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 Have any of you heard this yet? Is this what his solo album is going to sound like? Please tell me this is a joke, an April Fool's joke or something, please. I've liked Matchbox 20 for a while now, but I must admit that I don't care for them as much as I once did, but still...the Matchbox 20 stuff is leaps and bounds better than this crap. It sounds like your normal bubblegum cliched pop material, something a boy band, Timberlake, or Spears would release, not Rob Thomas. If this is where he's going, then just like I said to Jewel, adios. Not to mention he looks like a cookie cutter pop/rock version of Eminem now. If you have heard it yet, check this out. The video even makes the song worse: http://www.robthomasmusic.com/rob1.html What do you guys think of this? I know that many of you hate Matchbox to start with, but going from that to what we have here for Thomas? Ugh. Sincerely, ...Downhome...
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 I was all prepared to say he was better now when you compared him to a boy band, but you're right, that's bad.
iamsherm 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 Sounds like his label took note of Maroon 5's success and tried to replicate it.

Downhome 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 Sounds like his label took note of Maroon 5's success and tried to replicate it. Good point, that and we've had a "lack" of that boyband sounding shit lately, and he possibly thinks he can fill a void, all the while making more and more cash. I can't put into words how much the sound of Maroon 5 pisses me off. I liked them for a second, but now I can't stand them.
Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2005 Matchbox 20 was one of the better Unoffensive 90s Rock Bands. I agree. Their first album was pretty great. And that first song "Push"--also great, imho.

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted March 25, 2005 Worst band I ever heard. Dorks drinking coffee music, and their dumb ex-girlfriends.

PLAGIARISM! 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2005 They should be killed. Where I used to work, my manager would regularly play one Matchbox 20 CD on loop for 8 hours. As if liking them in the first place isn't bad enough, if you do that with any CD you don'rt deserve to listen to music. What a cunt.

I was thinking more along the lines of Matchbox 20, Dexter Freebish, Barenaked Ladies, Third Eye Blind, the Goo Goo Dolls, the Gin Blossoms, and Hootie & The Blowfish. godthedog 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2005 darius has a cool little eddie-vedder-plus-southern-twang voice, which makes hootie slightly better. gin blossoms had decent singles and a jangly sound, which makes them at least more distinctive. i have a semi-soft spot for barenaked ladies' brainless fun, but i could never defend them. they are indeed SIGNIFICANTLY better than third eye blind or goo goo dolls. and deep blue something. Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2005 Matchbox's first album had some good stuff on it, then their material got weaker and weaker. Like every other band from that time it seemed. Gin Blossoms were pretty good...although their songs all sounded the same. As far as new mid 90s bands I liked Better Than Ezra.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2005 If the Gin Blossoms had lo-fi production and were on Matador Records, indie kids would've loved them. As it stands, an unfortunate association with Empire Records forever taints them in the eyes of many.

Vyce 0 Report post Posted March 28, 2005 I saw the video for this the other day. Song's awful, but will probably make him a ton of money for reasons I can't really explain. But I have to say, Rob actually looked VERY hot in the video. .........shit, I think I just made something of an admission.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2005 I thought Matchbox 20 had a song about beating a girl. If they did, they're pretty cool. That'd be Push. One of Thomas' ex-girlfriends saw the opportunity to get her 15 minutes of fame and some cash out of the situation and sued him on the basis that the song was about her. Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2005 I thought Rob's voice had that horse-like heehaw sound while singing in M20, I doubt I'm going to like him much more as a solo.
LivingLegendGaryColeman 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2005 I haven't paid any attention to matchbox20 since the second album came out. I really enjoyed "Yourself or Someone Like You" before they got known by a good chunk of people and then it seemed like forever before they would release the new album. I listened to the second album once and really never listened to it again. They went from something pretty decent to being music you would expect to hear from a middle-aged man cruising about town in his Mercedes. They got more hype from Thomas' single with Santana, but I really haven't expected anything more from them since album two tanked in my opinion.
