U.S. soldier who deserted to dodge 'criminal' war in Iraq loses asylum bid

Updated at 14:16 on March 24, 2005, EST.

TORONTO (CP) - An American war dodger who fled the U.S. military because he believed the invasion of Iraq was criminal has lost his bid for refugee status in Canada in a case closely watched on both sides of the border.

In a written ruling released Thursday, the Immigration and Refugee Board said Jeremy Hinzman had not made a convincing argument that he faced persecution or cruel and unusual punishment in the United States.

There was no immediate comment from Hinzman but his lawyer Jeffry House said he would ask the Federal Court to review the decision.

"Mr. Hinzman is disappointed," said House.

Why didn't he flee to Mexico?

We would have left his ass in Mexico.

Because possibly being sent to war in Iraq quite clearly > the pisshole that is Mexico.

Good for Canada - I guess they decided there was ONE issue upon which they didn't want to step on our toes.

Ain't that the straight honest truth.

I find it humorous when someone who joined the military of their own free will suddenly realizes they might actually have to do their sworn duty and take part in a war.

I think that if it's a just war then fine, but when it's unjust and based upon a tissue of lies, for profit, soldiers do have a point in objecting.

A used car salesman would be well within his right to refuse to sell a car that he knew had faulty brakes even though it is his job to sell the car.

Wow, way to rationalize someone backing out. Shut up.

He signed on, he signed a contract to be IN the military and do what he was told. There's no fudge room in that. Go pander elsewhere; this is a cut and dry case of him backing out of something he volunteered for. That don't work, bucky.

NO COMPARISON AT ALL.

The difference between a used car saleman and a soldier is that the used car salesman didn't agree to give up many of his rights as a citizen in order to take the job.

People forget that being a part of the military isn't just a job, its a full committment of your life. THEY OWN YOU. Recruiters don't do a very good job of explaining this to the people who join, but the recruit training NCOs sure the fuck try to make a point of it.

You know, I'm all for the rights of the conscientious objection and will run like hell myself to avoid having to do any military service. I also believe that if you're being ordered to march to your death (such as those guys who were told to escort an unprotected fuel truck in a place that has regular explosions), then I will also stand up for the personal right to object to being told to go out there and get killed.

But when you walk into the recruiting office door and say "suit me up, Sarge" you cannot really complain about the reasoning behind wars. You offered to go fight for whatever reason they told you.

Not yet, Bob. We have to get our orders from Bill to stand down from the FACTOR-LED BOYCOTT OF CANADA first. (Besides, I boycott Canada for other reasons.)

Oh, and fuck this kid...

Has Bill figured out a way to entwine the Shiavo case with a new FACTOR-LED BOYCOTT? I was sure that would be the next step in this thing.

Maybe instead of a boycott, he could do a cross-promotion with Pizza Hut.

Don't they have a Vegetable Lover's pizza?

You know sometimes, I am embarrased to be a US citizen, but I would never run to Canada (or back out of my commitment, considering my dad is a Vietname Vet and both my grandfathers were in WWII)

lol -- I just read that article, too. Can't you just v-chip that channel out or something?...

Can't you just like, choose not to watch it? I can't imagine spending money just to able to go "hey guys, look at how my TV jumps from channel 47 to 49!!!" when your buddies come over. I do give this guy credit though, he invented a useless product that people will nevertheless spend money on.
