Guest TheLastBoyscout Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 HOLY JEEZ If there was any argument on whether Batista was popular enough to headline 'Mania this should have killed. That crowd was MOLTEN.
Black Lushus Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 it was never a question of whether the crowd loved him or not...the question is how long will he and the WWE be able to SUSTAIN that reaction before he gets stale and moldy?
NoCalMike Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Uhmm, I actually remember a lukewarm crowd initially. The popped HUGE during the beatdown, but before that the crowd seemed to lack fire.

That depends on how he's booked. However, I do seem to remember some doubts about whether he was good enough in the ring to get over. Obviously that's not a problem.

Black Lushus Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 well my whole deal as far as Batista goes was, hey, putting the title on him can't be any WORSE than some of the crap they've done the past 3 years so, hell, why not?
jester Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 well my whole deal as far as Batista goes was, hey, putting the title on him can't be any WORSE than some of the crap they've done the past 3 years so, hell, why not? No kidding. After they put the belt on Bradshaw, and THEN built up his character, all those "this guy isn't ready for the belt" arguments don't carry much weight anymore.
Some Guy Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 This was far and away the most over he's been on any show so far and that is a very good thing heading into WM. I could not believe they had him say thank you to HHH. The crowd had no clue how to react to that and no one other than HHH could possibly have thought that it was the right thing for him to say. Thank God for cheap heat because the "you're an asshole" line saved him. I don't particularilly care for the guy but I would much rather see him on top than HHH, I'd rather see Maven on top at this point. But, I can't see how he'll sustain his heat. This type of shit will come back to bite him in the ass. HHH cuts a promo that is essentially true and Batista admits that it is. Batista makes a bad joke at Bischoff's espense after saying that he wouldn't touch HHH and HHH cuts an intense promo saying that he'll do whatever he wants and then slaps him in the face. Who is the bad ass here? The guy who does as he's told or the rebel who knows that no one can stop him? HHH went from being scared of him to being ambivilant about the match and pretty calmly stating that Big Dave has no chance in hell. Why would HHH be getting more and more confident? Confident enough to slap him in the face. Why wouldn't Batista be fighting back on the mic? Why does he have to thank HHH? The booking for this match has been good at times and really backward at others and if they keep booking his angles backwards with him not being the one in control then he'll flop. But ultimately the quality of the WM match will be the determining factor and that is entirely up to HHH, he controls the booking and he is the one who needs to carry Batista. If he decides to sandbag him at WM he has the power both in and out of the ring to do it. I think he'll make Batista look good at WM but insist on the match going too long and getting too much offense in. And at this point, considering the end of Raw I;m no longer sure that Dave is going over. When is the last time that HHH never really had the physical upperhand in a feud? When is the last time that HHH got beaten down on the Raw before the PPV and hasn't won?

Batista sat through HHH's tirade with a smirk, but HHH couldn't even stand "You're an asshole" without resorting to blows, and Batista beats him at that, too. Then you get the great visual of his MOWING through cops to get to HHH. Batista was awesome.
Guest Trivia247 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 the yardstick will be will Batista's popularity survive either beating HHH or losing to HHH and the aftermath of both? because as some said here a while back people could be all happy with him just because he is the next person in line on HHH. I tend to think that Batista's development has been awesome, he has proven not to be just some big dumb Beast destroying left and right, but infact clever and intelligent to play HHH and Flair to a point. Have that Calm cool in his Suits and just taking everything with stride while others would be nervious.

Hunter's Torn Quad Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Unless they've lost their minds, Batista is winning at Wrestlemania. Any other result would be stupid.
Twisted Intestine Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Unless they've lost their minds Yep..

Maybe because they're really putting someone over Hunter this time. I know the idea of someone actually being put over Hunter, and in the right manner, is literally mindblowing, but it shouldn't distract from should be obvious, that being Batista is winning.
AndrewTS Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Let's face it--I don't think WWE would have both heel champs go over and retain their titles. Plus, I can't see the last match on Wrestlemania be a JBL match. Then again, I could see HHH telling Vince how the heat would be nuclear if he'd go over Batista, and the rematch would then be even hotter. Yet if Chris Benoit can go over both HBK and HHH last year, I can't see much reason why a guy WWE's been looking for any excuse to push to the moon since he first showed his face on Raw wouldn't win this one.
Gary Floyd Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I personally think it would be a bad idea to job Batista to HHH at Mania. Right now, Batista's more over then ever, and to job him right away would kill his momentum. Then again, that hasn't stopped them (or HHH) in the past (see Booker T)
Vyce Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I've thought about this, and thought about this, and I just do NOT get the Batista thing. I just have no explanation as to why he's popular, other than "he's not HHH, nor has HHH buried him yet." Don't get me wrong.....I got nothing against the guy. It doesn't offend me that he's in the main event or anything. But at the same time, I don't care that he IS in the main event. It's just that he does absolutely nothing for me. I couldn't be more apathetic towards Dave Batista if I tried. I suppose I want him to win at Mania, but only because he'd be beating HHH. Other than that.......nothing. Is there something that I'm missing here?
NoCalMike Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 The aftermath of WM will be interesting, mostly to see what Batista can do with the circumstances of not playing off HHH's "I am God" promos. Of course, it would be silly to think their feud will be over after WM, however if Batista does survive this feud, remaining the champ, will he be exposed as a bland bag of muscles sooner then later?

Maybe so. I suppose that the only guy that HHH would possibly put over is one who is a big steroid freak who he groomed.

4hartthreat Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Let's face it--I don't think WWE would have both heel champs go over and retain their titles. Plus, I can't see the last match on Wrestlemania be a JBL match. What makes you think JBL is retaining his title? I think Cena is definately winning at WM. And I always just assumed up until a month or so ago that Batista was winning as well. But since he powerbombed HHH through that table, HHH has not done a damn thing to Batista and has only been made to look like a fool by him. HHH wins matches where he has dominated the entire build-up through out, do you really think he'll let himself be jobbed out after not winning a single confrontation during a feud? By all means Batista should probably win, but then again so should have Booker, but he won't, just like Booker. HHH put over Benoit last year, he is going to find a way to convince Vince that Batista just wouldn't be good for the company if he holds the title.
Hunter's Torn Quad Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Are people so thrown by Hunter truly putting someone over, that they lose all ability to think rationally and coherently ?
Twisted Intestine Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I agree that HHH is really putting over Batista. For real this time! I've thought that Batista would be the man Triple H actually puts over since he started turning. If Triple H put Batista over, and let him and others run with the company for a bit, while he wrestled in the upper mid card, Smarks everywhere would go insane looking for ways Triple H is just doing this to put himself over.
2GOLD Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Are people so thrown by Hunter truly putting someone over, that they lose all ability to think rationally and coherently ? Or they have seen the WWE fumble the ball so many times that they are almost expecting them to do it again. The WWE has become the MASTERS of shooting themselves in the foot since Vince went nuts. I just like Batista cause the guy has this charisma about him. It's something few in the WWE have right now. The only thing I find completely stupid about Batista is his freaking entrance. He has GOT the drop the pose down, it looks stupid and doesn't fit his character anymore at all. The dancing, the machine gun is all fine but that pose down has got to be removed. When the only thing I can say I hate about a guy is his entrance, I'm shocked. His moveset is passable for the WWE style, which isn't saying much but whatever. The only problem Batista might run into is the heels after HHH. Orton, no charisma at all. Edge, his intense look is incredibly laughable and I can't take him serious Christian, well come on, it's Christian
4hartthreat Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Are people so thrown by Hunter truly putting someone over, that they lose all ability to think rationally and coherently ? Are people so blinded by Batista's suits that they can't see that Batista is going down at Mania and that HHH is adding to his "Push Killer" list. -Batista, 4-3-05

Most people have had enough of the WWE building someone only to drop the ball and set it on fire. You can only screw your audience over so many times before they give you the finger and walk away.
Hunter's Torn Quad Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Are people so thrown by Hunter truly putting someone over, that they lose all ability to think rationally and coherently ? blah blah blah Don't be try and be a smartass. iggymcfly Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I'm glad somebody posted a thread on this. I thought Batista was great on Raw last night too. It actually reminded me of something from 1999 when the face was just so cool in the ring that everybody couldn't wait for him to beat the shit out of the heel, all the dialogue was good, and the heat was tremendous. I thought the "thank you" thing was actually great. What he was saying is that he thanks Flair for mentoring him, and he thanks for HHH for motivating him to beat his ass. He just didn't spell it out for everybody like Benoit or HBK would have against HHH, because that's his style. All the intangibles that Batista showed last night are exactly what someone like Booker T is misssing that kept him from ever getting the title. Batista was cool, calm, and collected. Instead of stumbling for words or looking lost, he just exuded coolness like he knew he owned HHH, and he was just waiting for the right chance to beat his ass. That brand of face charisma is what draws in most of the marks to wrestling, and I swear that Batista has more of it than anyone since The Rock.
Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Last night was clever. It is all about people believing Batista has a chance. He is over, that is why he is in this spot. Going into last night, for the casual fan, it is clear that HHH is the better wrestler. You cannot argue the point - the track record is there. What they did is show HHH's anger get the better of him, let him show his over-aggressivness as a vulnerability and instantly give Batista a better chance at winning, as they showed that Batista knew this from the way he slowly wound him up. Good stuff.
