EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2005 Tough situation, Al. Your Phillies are gonna win, but it's going to be by bunting, with Joe Morgan in the booth chuckling with glee at small ball being better than Moneyball. Thanks to XM, I listened to the radio call featuring Dave Campbell and some PBP guy. Campbell is wasted on ESPN radio. He is really damned good, describes things without insulting the viewers' intelligence.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2005 Two more things. One, Brett Myers has made an incredible turnaround. His miniscule ERA is backed up by a 10:1 K/BB ratio. Second, Steinbrenner made some of the more idiotic comments I have ever heard. Criticizing the team after 12 games? Half the problem is that the Boss's insistance on "win now" strategies, leading to a squad where only three of the 25 players (A-Rod, Pavano and Bubba Crosby) are below the age of 30. The relief pitching is built on names rather than talent, and there is no one on the bench who can hit worth a damn. The only legitimately good hitter on the bench was just optioned to AAA to make room for Kevin Brown. Â The Yankees could turn it around. But there is a part of me that feels this team is toast. Bernie Williams, Jason Giambi, and Tino Martinez could very well be washed up. Tony Womack (surprise) can't hit. This could be a fun season.

The only thing missing was a reference to Moneyball, a book written by A's general manager Billy Beane. Joe Morgan's personal copy.

This could be a fun season.  Question for Al - I've heard and read from various people that the Yankees are simply a really good team that is struggling from the start and that the O's are a medicore team at best who happen to be hot at the same time that they are facing a struggling team. Would you say that's about right or completely wrong?  I tend to fall somewhere in the middle in that I think the Yankees will turn it around, but they aren't going to be "the team to beat" or a shoe in for a playoff spot. Likewise, the O's are going to be around all year but will definitely have to play above themselves (specially the pitching) if they are to make the playoffs.  For reference's sake, here's an example of what I am talking about from a post at DVDVR (granted the guy is a Yankee's fan....):  Yeah, but you don't see articles that are like "The Orioles are playing at an expected level of ability!" You see "The Yankees are fucking up!" Which is what's happening. The Yankees are a very good team that's hit some bad luck in a slow start. The Orioles are a mediocre team who happen to be up against that slow start.  The Orioles will win about 75 games because they have about the worst rotation in baseball. The Yankees will win about 95 because their offense is about 70 runs better than the Orioles and their pitching is about 150 runs.

The Orioles will struggle at times due to their pitching, but they can easily finish at .500. We will have to wait and see on the Yankees, but right now I think 90 wins, and yes, they might not make the playoffs with that total.
mike546 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2005 The biggest problem to me with the Yankees so far is their pitching. Its been ridiculousy bad. The Yankees have scored first in a game this season four times. And they've won three of those games. There having the exact same problems they did last year. Falling behind early, then having the huge offesnse kill the bullpens in the later innings, and win. Well, thats not happening right now, and their not winning. They've had a starter go 7 innings ONCE this season. That makes them have to use the bullpen, which for some reason cannot get anybody out. Add that plus A-Rod not doing a damn thing, and Wolmack, Giambi, Tino and Bernie being pretty damn invinsible at the plate, it equals an 4-8 record.

The Yankees will win about 95 because their offense is about 70 runs better than the Orioles and their pitching is about 150 runs. Â Theres no way they have THE WORST rotation in baseball. Lopez, Bedard and Chen have been excellent so far this year. Together they've given up 10 earned runs in 47 innings, combining for a 3-0 record and 1 CG. Â Its Cabrera and Ponson which have been the weak links in the rotation.. Between the two, they've given up 25 earned runs in 25 innings (Ponson has 13 in just 8 innings). Cabrera pitched better vs the Yankees yesterday, but he still has a lot of room to improve. Ponson, Im convinced, should be in the bullpen or better yet, somewhere else besides the Orioles roster. Besides I have faith that they of course will get better. it all depends again on the rotation.   and I dont want to hear mets fans laughs and such, cuz despite being a hardcore fan, I dont hate on the mets, save for when they are playing the NYY. Cmon NY has to stick together against the onslaught of middleamerica   what the hell am I talking about?  anyhow, one more thing, Kevin Brown needs to be sent to the minors for awhile untill hes ready.
